¹The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying,

² “Please inquire of Yahweh for us; for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps Yahweh will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may withdraw from us.”

KJVEnquire^H1875^(H8798), I pray thee, of the LORD^H3068 for us^H1157; for Nebuchadrezzar^H5019 king^H4428 of Babylon^H894 maketh war^H3898^(H8737) against us; if so be that the LORD^H3068 will deal^H6213^(H8799) with us according to all his wondrous works^H6381^(H8737), that he may go up^H5927^(H8799) from us.

³ Then Jeremiah said to them, “Tell Zedekiah:

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) Jeremiah^H3414 unto them, Thus shall ye say^H559^(H8799) to Zedekiah^H6667:

⁴ ‘Yahweh, the God of Israel says, “Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans who besiege you outside the walls; and I will gather them into the middle of this city.

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478; Behold, I will turn back^H5437^(H8688) the weapons^H3627 of war^H4421 that are in your hands^H3027, wherewith ye fight^H3898^(H8737) against the king^H4428 of Babylon^H894, and against the Chaldeans^H3778, which besiege^H6696^(H8802) you without^H2351 the walls^H2346, and I will assemble^H622^(H8804) them into the midst^H8432 of this city^H5892.

⁵ I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation.

KJVAnd I myself will fight^H3898^(H8738) against you with an outstretched^H5186^(H8803) hand^H3027 and with a strong^H2389 arm^H2220, even in anger^H639, and in fury^H2534, and in great^H1419 wrath^H7110.

⁶ I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and animal. They will die of a great pestilence.

KJVAnd I will smite^H5221^(H8689) the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of this city^H5892, both man^H120 and beast^H929: they shall die^H4191^(H8799) of a great^H1419 pestilence^H1698.

⁷ Afterward,” says Yahweh, “I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, his servants, and the people, even those who are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life. He will strike them with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them, have pity, or have mercy.”’

⁸ “You shall say to this people, ‘Yahweh says: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

KJVAnd unto this people^H5971 thou shalt say^H559^(H8799), Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068; Behold, I set^H5414^(H8802) before^H6440 you the way^H1870 of life^H2416, and the way^H1870 of death^H4194.

⁹ He who remains in this city will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he who goes out and passes over to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he will live, and he will escape with his life.

KJVHe that abideth^H3427^(H8802) in this city^H5892 shall die^H4191^(H8799) by the sword^H2719, and by the famine^H7458, and by the pestilence^H1698: but he that goeth out^H3318^(H8802), and falleth^H5307^(H8804) to the Chaldeans^H3778 that besiege^H6696^(H8802) you, he shall live^H2421^(H8804)^(H8675)^H2421^(H8799), and his life^H5315 shall be unto him for a prey^H7998.

¹⁰ For I have set my face on this city for evil, and not for good,” says Yahweh. “It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.”’

KJVFor I have set^H7760^(H8804) my face^H6440 against this city^H5892 for evil^H7451, and not for good^H2896, saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068: it shall be given^H5414^(H8735) into the hand^H3027 of the king^H4428 of Babylon^H894, and he shall burn^H8313^(H8804) it with fire^H784.

¹¹ “Concerning the house of the king of Judah, hear Yahweh’s word:

KJVAnd touching the house^H1004 of the king^H4428 of Judah^H3063, say, Hear^H8085^(H8798) ye the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068;

¹² House of David, Yahweh says, ‘Execute justice in the morning, and deliver him who is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my wrath go out like fire, and burn so that no one can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

KJVO house^H1004 of David^H1732, thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068; Execute^H1777^(H8798) judgment^H4941 in the morning^H1242, and deliver^H5337^(H8685) him that is spoiled^H1497^(H8803) out of the hand^H3027 of the oppressor^H6231^(H8802), lest my fury^H2534 go out^H3318^(H8799) like fire^H784, and burn^H1197^(H8804) that none can quench^H3518^(H8764) it, because^H6440 of the evil^H7455 of your doings^H4611.

¹³ Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, and of the rock of the plain,’ says Yahweh. ‘You that say, “Who would come down against us?” or, “Who would enter into our homes?”

KJVBehold, I am against thee, O inhabitant^H3427^(H8802) of the valley^H6010, and rock^H6697 of the plain^H4334, saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068; which say^H559^(H8802), Who shall come down^H5181^(H8799) against us? or who shall enter^H935^(H8799) into our habitations^H4585?

¹⁴ I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings,’ says Yahweh; ‘and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it will devour all that is around her.’”

¹Now Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in Yahweh’s house, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.

KJVNow Pashur^H6583 the son^H1121 of Immer^H564 the priest^H3548, who was also chief^H6496 governor^H5057 in the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068, heard^H8085^(H8799) that Jeremiah^H3414 prophesied^H5012^(H8738) these things^H1697.

² Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the upper gate of Benjamin, which was in Yahweh’s house.

KJVThen Pashur^H6583 smote^H5221^(H8686) Jeremiah^H3414 the prophet^H5030, and put^H5414^(H8799) him in the stocks^H4115 that were in the high^H5945 gate^H8179 of Benjamin^H1144, which was by the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068.

³ On the next day, Pashhur released Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “Yahweh has not called your name Pashhur, but Magormissabib.

KJVAnd it came to pass on the morrow^H4283, that Pashur^H6583 brought forth^H3318^(H8686) Jeremiah^H3414 out of the stocks^H4115. Then said^H559^(H8799) Jeremiah^H3414 unto him, The LORD^H3068 hath not called^H7121^(H8804) thy name^H8034 Pashur^H6583, but Magormissabib^H4036.

⁴ For Yahweh says, ‘Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them captive to Babylon, and will kill them with the sword.

KJVFor thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, Behold, I will make^H5414^(H8802) thee a terror^H4032 to thyself, and to all thy friends^H157^(H8802): and they shall fall^H5307^(H8804) by the sword^H2719 of their enemies^H341^(H8802), and thine eyes^H5869 shall behold^H7200^(H8802) it: and I will give^H5414^(H8799) all Judah^H3063 into the hand^H3027 of the king^H4428 of Babylon^H894, and he shall carry them captive^H1540^(H8689) into Babylon^H894, and shall slay^H5221^(H8689) them with the sword^H2719.

⁵ Moreover I will give all the riches of this city, and all its gains, and all its precious things, yes, I will give all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies. They will make them captives, take them, and carry them to Babylon.

⁶ You, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house will go into captivity. You will come to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you, and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied falsely.’”

⁷ Yahweh, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded. You are stronger than I, and have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day. Everyone mocks me.

KJVO LORD^H3068, thou hast deceived^H6601^(H8765) me, and I was deceived^H6601^(H8735): thou art stronger^H2388^(H8804) than I, and hast prevailed^H3201^(H8799): I am in derision^H7814 daily^H3117, every one mocketh^H3932^(H8802) me.

⁸ For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, “Violence and destruction!” because Yahweh’s word has been made a reproach to me, and a derision, all day.

⁹ If I say that I will not make mention of him, or speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones. I am weary with holding it in. I can’t.

¹⁰ For I have heard the defaming of many: “Terror on every side! Denounce, and we will denounce him!” say all my familiar friends, those who watch for my fall. “Perhaps he will be persuaded, and we will prevail against him, and we will take our revenge on him.”

¹¹ But Yahweh is with me as an awesome mighty one. Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they won’t prevail. They will be utterly disappointed because they have not dealt wisely, even with an everlasting dishonor which will never be forgotten.

¹² But Yahweh of Armies, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for I have revealed my cause to you.

¹³ Sing to Yahweh! Praise Yahweh, for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.

¹⁴ Cursed is the day in which I was born. Don’t let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed.

¹⁵ Cursed is the man who brought news to my father, saying, “A boy is born to you,” making him very glad.

¹⁶ Let that man be as the cities which Yahweh overthrew, and didn’t repent. Let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime,

¹⁷ because he didn’t kill me from the womb. So my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great.

¹⁸ Why did I come out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
