¹The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (this was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon),

² which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem:

³ From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, these twenty-three years, Yahweh’s word has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking; but you have not listened.

⁴ Yahweh has sent to you all his servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them (but you have not listened or inclined your ear to hear),

⁵ saying, “Return now everyone from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that Yahweh has given to you and to your fathers, from of old and even forever more.

KJVThey said^H559^(H8800), Turn ye again^H7725^(H8798) now every one^H376 from his evil^H7451 way^H1870, and from the evil^H7455 of your doings^H4611, and dwell^H3427^(H8798) in the land^H127 that the LORD^H3068 hath given^H5414^(H8804) unto you and to your fathers^H1 for^H5704 ever^H5769 and ever^H5769:

⁶ Don’t go after other gods to serve them or worship them, and don’t provoke me to anger with the work of your hands; then I will do you no harm.”

⁷ “Yet you have not listened to me,” says Yahweh, “that you may provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own hurt.”

⁸ Therefore Yahweh of Armies says: “Because you have not heard my words,

KJVTherefore thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635; Because ye have not heard^H8085^(H8804) my words^H1697,

⁹ behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,” says Yahweh, “and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against its inhabitants, and against all these nations around. I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and a hissing, and perpetual desolations.

¹⁰ Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp.

¹¹ This whole land will be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

¹² “It will happen, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation,” says Yahweh, “for their iniquity. I will make the land of the Chaldeans desolate forever.

KJVAnd it shall come to pass, when seventy^H7657 years^H8141 are accomplished^H4390^(H8800), that I will punish^H6485^(H8799) the king^H4428 of Babylon^H894, and that nation^H1471, saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068, for their iniquity^H5771, and the land^H776 of the Chaldeans^H3778, and will make^H7760^(H8804) it perpetual^H5769 desolations^H8077.

¹³ I will bring on that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations.

¹⁴ For many nations and great kings will make bondservants of them, even of them. I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the work of their hands.”

¹⁵ For Yahweh, the God of Israel, says to me: “Take this cup of the wine of wrath from my hand, and cause all the nations to whom I send you to drink it.

KJVFor thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478 unto me; Take^H3947^(H8798) the wine^H3196 cup^H3563 of this fury^H2534 at my hand^H3027, and cause all the nations^H1471, to whom I send^H7971^(H8802) thee, to drink^H8248^(H8689) it.

¹⁶ They will drink, and reel back and forth, and be insane, because of the sword that I will send among them.”

KJVAnd they shall drink^H8354^(H8804), and be moved^H1607^(H8707), and be mad^H1984^(H8703), because^H6440 of the sword^H2719 that I will send^H7971^(H8802) among them.

¹⁷ Then I took the cup at Yahweh’s hand, and made all the nations to drink, to whom Yahweh had sent me:

¹⁸ Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, with its kings and its princes, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, a hissing, and a curse, as it is today;

¹⁹ Pharaoh king of Egypt, with his servants, his princes, and all his people;

²⁰ and all the mixed people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, all the kings of the Philistines, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;

²¹ Edom, Moab, and the children of Ammon;

²² and all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the isle which is beyond the sea;

²³ Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who have the corners of their beard cut off;

²⁴ and all the kings of Arabia, all the kings of the mixed people who dwell in the wilderness;

KJVAnd all the kings^H4428 of Arabia^H6152, and all the kings^H4428 of the mingled people^H6153 that dwell^H7931^(H8802) in the desert^H4057,

²⁵ and all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes;

KJVAnd all the kings^H4428 of Zimri^H2174, and all the kings^H4428 of Elam^H5867, and all the kings^H4428 of the Medes^H4074,

²⁶ and all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another; and all the kingdoms of the world, which are on the surface of the earth. The king of Sheshach will drink after them.

²⁷ “You shall tell them, ‘Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says: “Drink, and be drunk, vomit, fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.”’

KJVTherefore thou shalt say^H559^(H8804) unto them, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478; Drink^H8354^(H8798) ye, and be drunken^H7937^(H8798), and spue^H7006^(H8798), and fall^H5307^(H8798), and rise^H6965^(H8799) no more, because^H6440 of the sword^H2719 which I will send^H7971^(H8802) among you.

²⁸ It shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at your hand to drink, then you shall tell them, ‘Yahweh of Armies says: “You shall surely drink.

KJVAnd it shall be, if they refuse^H3985^(H8762) to take^H3947^(H8800) the cup^H3563 at thine hand^H3027 to drink^H8354^(H8800), then shalt thou say^H559^(H8804) unto them, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635; Ye shall certainly^H8354^(H8800) drink^H8354^(H8799).

²⁹ For, behold, I begin to work evil at the city which is called by my name; and should you be utterly unpunished? You will not be unpunished; for I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth, says Yahweh of Armies.”’

KJVFor, lo, I begin^H2490^(H8688) to bring evil^H7489^(H8687) on the city^H5892 which is called^H7121^(H8738) by my name^H8034, and should ye be utterly^H5352^(H8736) unpunished^H5352^(H8735)? ³⁰ “Therefore prophesy against them all these words, and tell them, “‘Yahweh will roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation. He will mightily roar against his fold. He will give a shout, as those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.

KJVTherefore prophesy^H5012^(H8735) thou against them all these words^H1697, and say^H559^(H8804) unto them, The LORD^H3068 shall roar^H7580^(H8799) from on high^H4791, and utter^H5414^(H8799) his voice^H6963 from his holy^H6944 habitation^H4583; he shall mightily^H7580^(H8800) roar^H7580^(H8799) upon his habitation^H5116; he shall give^H6030^(H8799) a shout^H1959, as they that tread^H1869^(H8802) the grapes, against all the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of the earth^H776.

³¹ A noise will come even to the end of the earth; for Yahweh has a controversy with the nations. He will enter into judgment with all flesh. As for the wicked, he will give them to the sword,”’ says Yahweh.”

³² Yahweh of Armies says, “Behold, evil will go out from nation to nation, and a great storm will be raised up from the uttermost parts of the earth.”

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635, Behold, evil^H7451 shall go forth^H3318^(H8802) from nation^H1471 to nation^H1471, and a great^H1419 whirlwind^H5591 shall be raised up^H5782^(H8735) from the coasts^H3411 of the earth^H776.

³³ The slain of Yahweh will be at that day from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth. They won’t be lamented. They won’t be gathered or buried. They will be dung on the surface of the ground.

KJVAnd the slain^H2491 of the LORD^H3068 shall be at that day^H3117 from one end^H7097 of the earth^H776 even unto the other end^H7097 of the earth^H776: they shall not be lamented^H5594^(H8735), neither gathered^H622^(H8735), nor buried^H6912^(H8735); they shall be dung^H1828 upon^H6440 the ground^H127.

³⁴ Wail, you shepherds, and cry. Wallow in dust, you leader of the flock; for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions have fully come, and you will fall like fine pottery.

³⁵ The shepherds will have no way to flee. The leader of the flock will have no escape.

³⁶ A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and the wailing of the leader of the flock, for Yahweh destroys their pasture.

KJVA voice^H6963 of the cry^H6818 of the shepherds^H7462^(H8802), and an howling^H3215 of the principal^H117 of the flock^H6629, shall be heard: for the LORD^H3068 hath spoiled^H7703^(H8802) their pasture^H4830.

³⁷ The peaceful folds are brought to silence because of the fierce anger of Yahweh.

KJVAnd the peaceable^H7965 habitations^H4999 are cut down^H1826^(H8738) because^H6440 of the fierce^H2740 anger^H639 of the LORD^H3068.

³⁸ He has left his covert, as the lion; for their land has become an astonishment because of the fierceness of the oppression, and because of his fierce anger.

¹Yahweh showed me, and behold, two baskets of figs were set before Yahweh’s temple, after Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the craftsmen and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.

³ Then Yahweh asked me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” I said, “Figs. The good figs are very good, and the bad are very bad, so bad that they can’t be eaten.”

⁴ Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

KJVAgain the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto me, saying^H559^(H8800),

⁵ “Yahweh, the God of Israel says: ‘Like these good figs, so I will regard the captives of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans, as good.

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478; Like these good^H2896 figs^H8384, so will I acknowledge^H5234^(H8686) them that are carried away captive^H1546 of Judah^H3063, whom I have sent^H7971^(H8765) out of this place^H4725 into the land^H776 of the Chaldeans^H3778 for their good^H2896.

⁶ For I will set my eyes on them for good, and I will bring them again to this land. I will build them, and not pull them down. I will plant them, and not pluck them up.

⁷ I will give them a heart to know me, that I am Yahweh. They will be my people, and I will be their God; for they will return to me with their whole heart.

⁸ “‘As the bad figs, which can’t be eaten, they are so bad,’ surely Yahweh says, ‘So I will give up Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and those who dwell in the land of Egypt.

KJVAnd as the evil^H7451 figs^H8384, which cannot be eaten^H398^(H8735), they are so evil^H7455; surely thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, So will I give^H5414^(H8799) Zedekiah^H6667 the king^H4428 of Judah^H3063, and his princes^H8269, and the residue^H7611 of Jerusalem^H3389, that remain^H7604^(H8737) in this land^H776, and them that dwell^H3427^(H8802) in the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714:

⁹ I will even give them up to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth for evil, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I will drive them.

¹⁰ I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence among them, until they are consumed from off the land that I gave to them and to their fathers.’”
