Jeremiah 36
WEB·Jeremiah 36
1In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,
KJVAnd it came to pass in the fourthH7243 yearH8141 of JehoiakimH3079 the sonH1121 of JosiahH2977 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, that this wordH1697 came unto JeremiahH3414 from the LORDH3068, sayingH559(H8800),
2 “Take a scroll of a book, and write in it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel, against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah even to this day.
KJVTakeH3947(H8798) thee a rollH4039 of a bookH5612, and writeH3789(H8804) therein all the wordsH1697 that I have spokenH1696(H8765) unto thee against IsraelH3478, and against JudahH3063, and against all the nationsH1471, from the dayH3117 I spakeH1696(H8765) unto thee, from the daysH3117 of JosiahH2977, even unto this dayH3117.
3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I intend to do to them, that they may each return from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
KJVIt may be that the houseH1004 of JudahH3063 will hearH8085(H8799) all the evilH7451 which I purposeH2803(H8802) to doH6213(H8800) unto them; that they may returnH7725(H8799) every manH376 from his evilH7451 wayH1870; that I may forgiveH5545(H8804) their iniquityH5771 and their sinH2403.
4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all Yahweh’s words, which he had spoken to him, on a scroll of a book.
KJVThen JeremiahH3414 calledH7121(H8799) BaruchH1263 the sonH1121 of NeriahH5374: and BaruchH1263 wroteH3789(H8799) from the mouthH6310 of JeremiahH3414 all the wordsH1697 of the LORDH3068, which he had spokenH1696(H8765) unto him, upon a rollH4039 of a bookH5612.
5 Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am restricted. I can’t go into Yahweh’s house.
KJVAnd JeremiahH3414 commandedH6680(H8762) BaruchH1263, sayingH559(H8800), I am shut upH6113(H8803); I cannotH3201(H8799) goH935(H8800) into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068:
6 Therefore you go, and read from the scroll which you have written from my mouth, Yahweh’s words, in the ears of the people in Yahweh’s house on the fast day. Also you shall read them in the ears of all Judah who come out of their cities.
KJVTherefore goH935(H8804) thou, and readH7121(H8804) in the rollH4039, which thou hast writtenH3789(H8804) from my mouthH6310, the wordsH1697 of the LORDH3068 in the earsH241 of the peopleH5971 in the LORD'SH3068 houseH1004 upon the fastingH6685 dayH3117: and also thou shalt readH7121(H8799) them in the earsH241 of all JudahH3063 that come outH935(H8802) of their citiesH5892.
7 It may be they will present their supplication before Yahweh, and will each return from his evil way; for Yahweh has pronounced great anger and wrath against this people.”
KJVIt may be they will presentH5307(H8799) their supplicationH8467 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, and will returnH7725(H8799) every oneH376 from his evilH7451 wayH1870: for greatH1419 is the angerH639 and the furyH2534 that the LORDH3068 hath pronouncedH1696(H8765) against this peopleH5971.
8 Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book Yahweh’s words in Yahweh’s house.
KJVAnd BaruchH1263 the sonH1121 of NeriahH5374 didH6213(H8799) according to all that JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 commandedH6680(H8765) him, readingH7121(H8800) in the bookH5612 the wordsH1697 of the LORDH3068 in the LORD'SH3068 houseH1004.
9 Now in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem, proclaimed a fast before Yahweh.
KJVAnd it came to pass in the fifthH2549 yearH8141 of JehoiakimH3079 the sonH1121 of JosiahH2977 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, in the ninthH8671 monthH2320, that they proclaimedH7121(H8804) a fastH6685 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 to all the peopleH5971 in JerusalemH3389, and to all the peopleH5971 that cameH935(H8802) from the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 unto JerusalemH3389.
10 Then Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the book in Yahweh’s house, in the room of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entry of the new gate of Yahweh’s house, in the ears of all the people.
KJVThen readH7121(H8799) BaruchH1263 in the bookH5612 the wordsH1697 of JeremiahH3414 in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, in the chamberH3957 of GemariahH1587 the sonH1121 of ShaphanH8227 the scribeH5608(H8802), in the higherH5945 courtH2691, at the entryH6607 of the newH2319 gateH8179 of the LORD'SH3068 houseH1004, in the earsH241 of all the peopleH5971.
11 When Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all Yahweh’s words,
KJVWhen MichaiahH4321 the sonH1121 of GemariahH1587, the sonH1121 of ShaphanH8227, had heardH8085(H8799) out of the bookH5612 all the wordsH1697 of the LORDH3068,
12 he went down into the king’s house, into the scribe’s room; and behold, all the princes were sitting there, Elishama the scribe, Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.
KJVThen he went downH3381(H8799) into the king'sH4428 houseH1004, into the scribe'sH5608(H8802) chamberH3957: and, lo, all the princesH8269 satH3427(H8802) there, even ElishamaH476 the scribeH5608(H8802), and DelaiahH1806 the sonH1121 of ShemaiahH8098, and ElnathanH494 the sonH1121 of AchborH5907, and GemariahH1587 the sonH1121 of ShaphanH8227, and ZedekiahH6667 the sonH1121 of HananiahH2608, and all the princesH8269.
13 Then Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.
KJVThen MichaiahH4321 declaredH5046(H8686) unto them all the wordsH1697 that he had heardH8085(H8804), when BaruchH1263 readH7121(H8800) the bookH5612 in the earsH241 of the peopleH5971.
14 Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll in which you have read in the ears of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand, and came to them.
KJVTherefore all the princesH8269 sentH7971(H8799) JehudiH3065 the sonH1121 of NethaniahH5418, the sonH1121 of ShelemiahH8018, the sonH1121 of CushiH3570, unto BaruchH1263, sayingH559(H8800), TakeH3947(H8798) in thine handH3027 the rollH4039 wherein thou hast readH7121(H8804) in the earsH241 of the peopleH5971, and comeH3212(H8798). So BaruchH1263 the sonH1121 of NeriahH5374 tookH3947(H8799) the rollH4039 in his handH3027, and cameH935(H8799) unto them.
15 They said to him, “Sit down now, and read it in our hearing.” So Baruch read it in their hearing.
KJVAnd they saidH559(H8799) unto him, Sit downH3427(H8798) now, and readH7121(H8798) it in our earsH241. So BaruchH1263 readH7121(H8799) it in their earsH241.
16 Now when they had heard all the words, they turned in fear one toward another, and said to Baruch, “We will surely tell the king of all these words.”
KJVNow it came to pass, when they had heardH8085(H8800) all the wordsH1697, they were afraidH6342(H8804) bothH413 oneH376 and otherH7453, and saidH559(H8799) unto BaruchH1263, We will surelyH5046(H8687) tellH5046(H8686) the kingH4428 of all these wordsH1697.
17 They asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us now, how did you write all these words at his mouth?”
KJVAnd they askedH7592(H8804) BaruchH1263, sayingH559(H8800), TellH5046(H8685) us now, How didst thou writeH3789(H8804) all these wordsH1697 at his mouthH6310?
18 Then Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.”
KJVThen BaruchH1263 answeredH559(H8799) them, He pronouncedH7121(H8799) all these wordsH1697 unto me with his mouthH6310, and I wroteH3789(H8802) them with inkH1773 in the bookH5612.
19 Then the princes said to Baruch, “You and Jeremiah go hide. Don’t let anyone know where you are.”
KJVThen saidH559(H8799) the princesH8269 unto BaruchH1263, GoH3212(H8798), hideH5641(H8734) thee, thou and JeremiahH3414; and let no manH376 knowH3045(H8799) whereH375 ye be.
20 They went in to the king into the court, but they had laid up the scroll in the room of Elishama the scribe. Then they told all the words in the hearing of the king.
KJVAnd they went inH935(H8799) to the kingH4428 into the courtH2691, but they laid upH6485(H8689) the rollH4039 in the chamberH3957 of ElishamaH476 the scribeH5608(H8802), and toldH5046(H8686) all the wordsH1697 in the earsH241 of the kingH4428.
21 So the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the room of Elishama the scribe. Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king, and in the hearing of all the princes who stood beside the king.
KJVSo the kingH4428 sentH7971(H8799) JehudiH3065 to fetchH3947(H8800) the rollH4039: and he tookH3947(H8799) it out of ElishamaH476 the scribe'sH5608(H8802) chamberH3957. And JehudiH3065 readH7121(H8799) it in the earsH241 of the kingH4428, and in the earsH241 of all the princesH8269 which stoodH5975(H8802) besideH5921 the kingH4428.
22 Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, and there was a fire in the brazier burning before him.
KJVNow the kingH4428 satH3427(H8802) in the winterhouseH1004H2779 in the ninthH8671 monthH2320: and there was a fire on the hearthH254 burningH1197(H8794) beforeH6440 him.
23 When Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.
KJVAnd it came to pass, that when JehudiH3065 had readH7121(H8800) threeH7969 or fourH702 leavesH1817, he cutH7167(H8799) it with the penknifeH8593H5608(H8802), and castH7993(H8687) it into the fireH784 that was on the hearthH254, until all the rollH4039 was consumedH8552(H8800) in the fireH784 that was on the hearthH254.
24 The king and his servants who heard all these words were not afraid, and didn’t tear their garments.
KJVYet they were not afraidH6342(H8804), nor rentH7167(H8804) their garmentsH899, neither the kingH4428, nor any of his servantsH5650 that heardH8085(H8802) all these wordsH1697.
25 Moreover Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the scroll; but he would not listen to them.
KJVNevertheless ElnathanH494 and DelaiahH1806 and GemariahH1587 had made intercessionH6293(H8689) to the kingH4428 that he would not burnH8313(H8800) the rollH4039: but he would not hearH8085(H8804) them.
26 The king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; but Yahweh hid them.
KJVBut the kingH4428 commandedH6680(H8762) JerahmeelH3396 the sonH1121 of HammelechH4429, and SeraiahH8304 the sonH1121 of AzrielH5837, and ShelemiahH8018 the sonH1121 of AbdeelH5655, to takeH3947(H8800) BaruchH1263 the scribeH5608(H8802) and JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030: but the LORDH3068 hidH5641(H8686) them.
27 Then Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah, after the king had burned the scroll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,
KJVThen the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 came to JeremiahH3414, afterH310 that the kingH4428 had burnedH8313(H8800) the rollH4039, and the wordsH1697 which BaruchH1263 wroteH3789(H8804) at the mouthH6310 of JeremiahH3414, sayingH559(H8800),
28 “Take again another scroll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned.
KJVTakeH3947(H8798) thee againH7725(H8798) anotherH312 rollH4039, and writeH3789(H8798) in it all the formerH7223 wordsH1697 that were in the firstH7223 rollH4039, which JehoiakimH3079 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063 hath burnedH8313(H8804).
29 Concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Yahweh says: “You have burned this scroll, saying, ‘Why have you written therein, saying, “The king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cause to cease from there man and animal”?’”
KJVAnd thou shalt sayH559(H8799) to JehoiakimH3079 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, Thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068; Thou hast burnedH8313(H8804) this rollH4039, sayingH559(H8800), Why hast thou writtenH3789(H8804) therein, sayingH559(H8800), The kingH4428 of BabylonH894 shall certainlyH935(H8800) comeH935(H8799) and destroyH7843(H8689) this landH776, and shall cause to ceaseH7673(H8689) from thence manH120 and beastH929?
30 Therefore Yahweh says concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: “He will have no one to sit on David’s throne. His dead body will be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.
KJVTherefore thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068 of JehoiakimH3079 kingH4428 of JudahH3063; He shall have none to sitH3427(H8802) upon the throneH3678 of DavidH1732: and his dead bodyH5038 shall be cast outH7993(H8716) in the dayH3117 to the heatH2721, and in the nightH3915 to the frostH7140.
31 I will punish him, his offspring, and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring on them, on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they didn’t listen.”’”
KJVAnd I will punishH6485(H8804) him and his seedH2233 and his servantsH5650 for their iniquityH5771; and I will bringH935(H8689) upon them, and upon the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of JerusalemH3389, and upon the menH376 of JudahH3063, all the evilH7451 that I have pronouncedH1696(H8765) against them; but they hearkenedH8085(H8804) not.
32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many similar words were added to them.
KJVThen tookH3947(H8804) JeremiahH3414 anotherH312 rollH4039, and gaveH5414(H8799) it to BaruchH1263 the scribeH5608(H8802), the sonH1121 of NeriahH5374; who wroteH3789(H8799) therein from the mouthH6310 of JeremiahH3414 all the wordsH1697 of the bookH5612 which JehoiakimH3079 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 had burnedH8313(H8804) in the fireH784: and there were addedH3254(H8738) besides unto them manyH7227 likeH1992 wordsH1697.
