¹When Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of Yahweh their God, with which Yahweh their God had sent him to them, even all these words,

KJVAnd it came to pass, that when Jeremiah^H3414 had made an end^H3615^(H8763) of speaking^H1696^(H8763) unto all the people^H5971 all the words^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 their God^H430, for which the LORD^H3068 their God^H430 had sent^H7971^(H8804) him to them, even all these words^H1697,

² then Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men spoke, saying to Jeremiah, “You speak falsely. Yahweh our God has not sent you to say, ‘You shall not go into Egypt to live there;’

KJVThen spake^H559^(H8799) Azariah^H5838 the son^H1121 of Hoshaiah^H1955, and Johanan^H3110 the son^H1121 of Kareah^H7143, and all the proud^H2086 men^H582, saying^H559^(H8802) unto Jeremiah^H3414, Thou speakest^H1696^(H8764) falsely^H8267: the LORD^H3068 our God^H430 hath not sent^H7971^(H8804) thee to say^H559^(H8800), Go^H935^(H8799) not into Egypt^H4714 to sojourn^H1481^(H8800) there:

³ but Baruch the son of Neriah has turned you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may put us to death or carry us away captive to Babylon.”

KJVBut Baruch^H1263 the son^H1121 of Neriah^H5374 setteth thee on^H5496^(H8688) against us, for to^H4616 deliver^H5414^(H8800) us into the hand^H3027 of the Chaldeans^H3778, that they might put us to death^H4191^(H8687), and carry us away captives^H1540^(H8687) into Babylon^H894.

⁴ So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, didn’t obey Yahweh’s voice, to dwell in the land of Judah.

KJVSo Johanan^H3110 the son^H1121 of Kareah^H7143, and all the captains^H8269 of the forces^H2428, and all the people^H5971, obeyed^H8085^(H8804) not the voice^H6963 of the LORD^H3068, to dwell^H3427^(H8800) in the land^H776 of Judah^H3063.

⁵ But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces took all the remnant of Judah, who had returned from all the nations where they had been driven, to live in the land of Judah—

KJVBut Johanan^H3110 the son^H1121 of Kareah^H7143, and all the captains^H8269 of the forces^H2428, took^H3947^(H8799) all the remnant^H7611 of Judah^H3063, that were returned^H7725^(H8804) from all nations^H1471, whither they had been driven^H5080^(H8738), to dwell^H1481^(H8800) in the land^H776 of Judah^H3063;

⁶ the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters, and every person who Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah.

⁷ They came into the land of Egypt, for they didn’t obey Yahweh’s voice; and they came to Tahpanhes.

KJVSo they came^H935^(H8799) into the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714: for they obeyed^H8085^(H8804) not the voice^H6963 of the LORD^H3068: thus came^H935^(H8799) they even to Tahpanhes^H8471.

⁸ Then Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

KJVThen came the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 unto Jeremiah^H3414 in Tahpanhes^H8471, saying^H559^(H8800),

⁹ “Take great stones in your hand and hide them in mortar in the brick work which is at the entry of Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah.

KJVTake^H3947^(H8798) great^H1419 stones^H68 in thine hand^H3027, and hide^H2934^(H8804) them in the clay^H4423 in the brickkiln^H4404, which is at the entry^H6607 of Pharaoh's^H6547 house^H1004 in Tahpanhes^H8471, in the sight^H5869 of the men^H582 of Judah^H3064;

¹⁰ Tell them, Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne on these stones that I have hidden; and he will spread his royal pavilion over them.

KJVAnd say^H559^(H8804) unto them, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478; Behold, I will send^H7971^(H8802) and take^H3947^(H8804) Nebuchadrezzar^H5019 the king^H4428 of Babylon^H894, my servant^H5650, and will set^H7760^(H8804) his throne^H3678 upon^H4605 these stones^H68 that I have hid^H2934^(H8804); and he shall spread^H5186^(H8804) his royal pavilion^H8237 over them.

¹¹ He will come, and will strike the land of Egypt; such as are for death will be put to death, and such as are for captivity to captivity, and such as are for the sword to the sword.

KJVAnd when he cometh^H935^(H8804), he shall smite^H5221^(H8689) the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714, and deliver such as are for death^H4194 to death^H4194; and such as are for captivity^H7628 to captivity^H7628; and such as are for the sword^H2719 to the sword^H2719.

¹² I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt. He will burn them, and carry them away captive. He will array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd puts on his garment; and he will go out from there in peace.

¹³ He will also break the pillars of Beth Shemesh that is in the land of Egypt; and he will burn the houses of the gods of Egypt with fire.’”

KJVHe shall break^H7665^(H8765) also the images^H4676 of Bethshemesh^H1053, that is in the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714; and the houses^H1004 of the gods^H430 of the Egyptians^H4714 shall he burn^H8313^(H8799) with fire^H784.

¹Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even to the greatest, came near,

² and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Please let our supplication be presented before you, and pray for us to Yahweh your God, even for all this remnant, for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes see us,

KJVAnd said^H559^(H8799) unto Jeremiah^H3414 the prophet^H5030, Let, we beseech thee, our supplication^H8467 be accepted^H5307^(H8799) before^H6440 thee, and pray^H6419^(H8690) for us unto the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430, even for all this remnant^H7611;(for we are left^H7604^(H8738) but a few^H4592 of many^H7235^(H8687), as thine eyes^H5869 do behold^H7200^(H8802) us:)

³ that Yahweh your God may show us the way in which we should walk, and the things that we should do.”

KJVThat the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430 may shew^H5046^(H8686) us the way^H1870 wherein we may walk^H3212^(H8799), and the thing^H1697 that we may do^H6213^(H8799).

⁴ Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to Yahweh your God according to your words; and it will happen that whatever thing Yahweh answers you, I will declare it to you. I will keep nothing back from you.”

⁵ Then they said to Jeremiah, “May Yahweh be a true and faithful witness among us, if we don’t do according to all the word with which Yahweh your God sends you to tell us.

KJVThen they said^H559^(H8804) to Jeremiah^H3414, The LORD^H3068 be a true^H571 and faithful^H539^(H8737) witness^H5707 between us, if we do^H6213^(H8799) not even according to all things^H1697 for the which the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430 shall send^H7971^(H8799) thee to us.

⁶ Whether it is good, or whether it is bad, we will obey the voice of Yahweh our God, to whom we send you; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of Yahweh our God.”

⁷ After ten days, Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah.

KJVAnd it came to pass after^H7093 ten^H6235 days^H3117, that the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto Jeremiah^H3414.

⁸ Then he called Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,

KJVThen called^H7121^(H8799) he Johanan^H3110 the son^H1121 of Kareah^H7143, and all the captains^H8269 of the forces^H2428 which were with him, and all the people^H5971 from the least^H6996 even to the greatest^H1419,

⁹ and said to them, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your supplication before him, says:

KJVAnd said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478, unto whom ye sent^H7971^(H8804) me to present^H5307^(H8687) your supplication^H8467 before^H6440 him;

¹⁰ ‘If you will still live in this land, then I will build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I grieve over the distress that I have brought on you.

KJVIf ye will still^H7725^(H8800) abide^H3427^(H8799) in this land^H776, then will I build^H1129^(H8804) you, and not pull you down^H2040^(H8799), and I will plant^H5193^(H8804) you, and not pluck you up^H5428^(H8799): for I repent^H5162^(H8738) me of the evil^H7451 that I have done^H6213^(H8804) unto you.

¹¹ Don’t be afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid. Don’t be afraid of him,’ says Yahweh, ‘for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.

¹² I will grant you mercy, that he may have mercy on you, and cause you to return to your own land.

¹³ “‘But if you say, “We will not dwell in this land,” so that you don’t obey Yahweh your God’s voice,

KJVBut if ye say^H559^(H8802), We will not dwell^H3427^(H8799) in this land^H776, neither obey^H8085^(H8800) the voice^H6963 of the LORD^H3068 your God^H430,

¹⁴ saying, “No, but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we will see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there we will dwell;”’

¹⁵ now therefore hear Yahweh’s word, O remnant of Judah! Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says, ‘If you indeed set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to live there,

KJVAnd now therefore hear^H8085^(H8798) the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068, ye remnant^H7611 of Judah^H3063; Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478; If ye wholly^H7760^(H8800) set^H7760^(H8799) your faces^H6440 to enter^H935^(H8800) into Egypt^H4714, and go^H935^(H8804) to sojourn^H1481^(H8800) there;

¹⁶ then it will happen that the sword, which you fear, will overtake you there in the land of Egypt; and the famine, about which you are afraid, will follow close behind you there in Egypt; and you will die there.

KJVThen it shall come to pass, that the sword^H2719, which ye feared^H3373, shall overtake^H5381^(H8686) you there in the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714, and the famine^H7458, whereof ye were afraid^H1672^(H8802), shall follow close^H1692^(H8799) after^H310 you there in Egypt^H4714; and there ye shall die^H4191^(H8799).

¹⁷ So will it be with all the men who set their faces to go into Egypt to live there. They will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence. None of them will remain or escape from the evil that I will bring on them.’

¹⁸ For Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘As my anger and my wrath has been poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you, when you enter into Egypt; and you will be an object of horror, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach; and you will see this place no more.’

KJVFor thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 of hosts^H6635, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478; As mine anger^H639 and my fury^H2534 hath been poured forth^H5413^(H8738) upon the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Jerusalem^H3389; so shall my fury^H2534 be poured forth^H5413^(H8799) upon you, when ye shall enter^H935^(H8800) into Egypt^H4714: and ye shall be an execration^H423, and an astonishment^H8047, and a curse^H7045, and a reproach^H2781; and ye shall see^H7200^(H8799) this place^H4725 no more.

¹⁹ “Yahweh has spoken concerning you, remnant of Judah, ‘Don’t go into Egypt!’ Know certainly that I have testified to you today.

KJVThe LORD^H3068 hath said^H1696^(H8765) concerning you, O ye remnant^H7611 of Judah^H3063; Go^H935^(H8799) ye not into Egypt^H4714: know^H3045^(H8799) certainly^H3045^(H8800) that I have admonished^H5749^(H8689) you this day^H3117.

²⁰ For you have dealt deceitfully against your own souls; for you sent me to Yahweh your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to Yahweh our God; and according to all that Yahweh our God says, so declare to us, and we will do it.’

²¹ I have declared it to you today; but you have not obeyed Yahweh your God’s voice in anything for which he has sent me to you.

²² Now therefore know certainly that you will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence in the place where you desire to go to live.”
