WEB·Jeremiah 50
1The word that Yahweh spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet.
KJVThe wordH1697 that the LORDH3068 spakeH1696(H8765) against BabylonH894 and against the landH776 of the ChaldeansH3778 byH3027 JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030.
2 “Declare among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and don’t conceal; say, ‘Babylon has been taken, Bel is disappointed, Merodach is dismayed! Her images are disappointed. Her idols are dismayed.’
KJVDeclareH5046(H8685) ye among the nationsH1471, and publishH8085(H8685), and set upH5375(H8798) a standardH5251; publishH8085(H8685), and concealH3582(H8762) not: sayH559(H8798), BabylonH894 is takenH3920(H8738), BelH1078 is confoundedH3001(H8689), MerodachH4781 is broken in piecesH2865(H8804); her idolsH6091 are confoundedH3001(H8689), her imagesH1544 are broken in piecesH2865(H8804).
3 For a nation comes up out of the north against her, which will make her land desolate, and no one will dwell in it. They have fled. They are gone, both man and animal.
KJVFor out of the northH6828 there cometh upH5927(H8804) a nationH1471 against her, which shall makeH7896(H8799) her landH776 desolateH8047, and none shall dwellH3427(H8802) therein: they shall removeH5110(H8804), they shall departH1980(H8804), both manH120 and beastH929.
4 “In those days, and in that time,” says Yahweh, “the children of Israel will come, they and the children of Judah together; they will go on their way weeping, and will seek Yahweh their God.
KJVIn those daysH3117, and in that timeH6256, saithH5002(H8803) the LORDH3068, the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 shall comeH935(H8799), they and the childrenH1121 of JudahH3063 togetherH3162, goingH1980(H8800) and weepingH1058(H8800): they shall goH3212(H8799), and seekH1245(H8762) the LORDH3068 their GodH430.
5 They will inquire concerning Zion with their faces turned toward it, saying, ‘Come, and join yourselves to Yahweh in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten.’
KJVThey shall askH7592(H8799) the wayH1870 to ZionH6726 with their facesH6440 thitherwardH2008, saying, ComeH935(H8798), and let us joinH3867(H8738) ourselves to the LORDH3068 in a perpetualH5769 covenantH1285 that shall not be forgottenH7911(H8735).
6 My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have caused them to go astray. They have turned them away on the mountains. They have gone from mountain to hill. They have forgotten their resting place.
KJVMy peopleH5971 hath been lostH6(H8802) sheepH6629: their shepherdsH7462(H8802) have caused them to go astrayH8582(H8689), they have turned them awayH7725(H8790)(H8675)H7726 on the mountainsH2022: they have goneH1980(H8804) from mountainH2022 to hillH1389, they have forgottenH7911(H8804) their restingplaceH7258.
7 All who found them have devoured them. Their adversaries said, ‘We are not guilty, because they have sinned against Yahweh, the habitation of righteousness, even Yahweh, the hope of their fathers.’
KJVAll that foundH4672(H8802) them have devouredH398(H8804) them: and their adversariesH6862 saidH559(H8804), We offendH816(H8799) not, because they have sinnedH2398(H8804) against the LORDH3068, the habitationH5116 of justiceH6664, even the LORDH3068, the hopeH4723 of their fathersH1.
8 “Flee out of the middle of Babylon! Go out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the male goats before the flocks.
KJVRemoveH5110(H8798) out of the midstH8432 of BabylonH894, and go forthH3318(H8798)(H8675)H3318(H8799) out of the landH776 of the ChaldeansH3778, and be as the he goatsH6260 beforeH6440 the flocksH6629.
9 For, behold, I will stir up and cause to come up against Babylon a company of great nations from the north country; and they will set themselves in array against her. She will be taken from there. Their arrows will be as of an expert mighty man. None of them will return in vain.
KJVFor, lo, I will raiseH5782(H8688) and cause to come upH5927(H8688) against BabylonH894 an assemblyH6951 of greatH1419 nationsH1471 from the northH6828 countryH776: and they shall set themselves in arrayH6186(H8804) against her; from thence she shall be takenH3920(H8735): their arrowsH2671 shall be as of a mightyH1368 expert manH7919(H8688)(H8676)H7921(H8688); none shall returnH7725(H8799) in vainH7387.
10 Chaldea will be a prey. All who prey on her will be satisfied,” says Yahweh.
KJVAnd ChaldeaH3778 shall be a spoilH7998: all that spoilH7997(H8802) her shall be satisfiedH7646(H8799), saithH5002(H8803) the LORDH3068.
11 “Because you are glad, because you rejoice, O you who plunder my heritage, because you are wanton as a heifer that treads out the grain, and neigh as strong horses,
KJVBecause ye were gladH8055(H8799), because ye rejoicedH5937(H8799), O ye destroyersH8154(H8802) of mine heritageH5159, because ye are grown fatH6335(H8799) as the heiferH5697 at grassH1877(H8676)H1758(H8801), and bellowH6670(H8799) as bullsH47;
12 your mother will be utterly disappointed. She who bore you will be confounded. Behold, she will be the least of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
KJVYour motherH517 shall be soreH3966 confoundedH954(H8804); she that bareH3205(H8802) you shall be ashamedH2659(H8804): behold, the hindermostH319 of the nationsH1471 shall be a wildernessH4057, a dry landH6723, and a desertH6160.
13 Because of Yahweh’s wrath she won’t be inhabited, but she will be wholly desolate. Everyone who goes by Babylon will be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.
KJVBecause of the wrathH7110 of the LORDH3068 it shall not be inhabitedH3427(H8799), but it shall be wholly desolateH8077: every one that goethH5674(H8802) by BabylonH894 shall be astonishedH8074(H8799), and hissH8319(H8799) at all her plaguesH4347.
14 Set yourselves in array against Babylon all around, all you who bend the bow; shoot at her. Spare no arrows, for she has sinned against Yahweh.
KJVPut yourselves in arrayH6186(H8798) against BabylonH894 round aboutH5439: all ye that bendH1869(H8802) the bowH7198, shootH3034(H8798) at her, spareH2550(H8799) no arrowsH2671: for she hath sinnedH2398(H8804) against the LORDH3068.
15 Shout against her all around. She has submitted herself. Her bulwarks have fallen. Her walls have been thrown down, for it is the vengeance of Yahweh. Take vengeance on her. As she has done, do to her.
KJVShoutH7321(H8685) against her round aboutH5439: she hath givenH5414(H8804) her handH3027: her foundationsH803 are fallenH5307(H8804), her wallsH2346 are thrown downH2040(H8738): for it is the vengeanceH5360 of the LORDH3068: take vengeanceH5358(H8734) upon her; as she hath doneH6213(H8804), doH6213(H8798) unto her.
16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him who handles the sickle in the time of harvest. For fear of the oppressing sword, they will each return to their own people, and they will each flee to their own land.
KJVCut offH3772(H8798) the sowerH2232(H8802) from BabylonH894, and him that handlethH8610(H8802) the sickleH4038 in the timeH6256 of harvestH7105: for fearH6440 of the oppressingH3238(H8802) swordH2719 they shall turnH6437(H8799) every oneH376 to his peopleH5971, and they shall fleeH5127(H8799) every oneH376 to his own landH776.
17 “Israel is a hunted sheep. The lions have driven him away. First, the king of Assyria devoured him, and now at last Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has broken his bones.”
KJVIsraelH3478 is a scatteredH6340(H8801) sheepH7716; the lionsH738 have driven him awayH5080(H8689): firstH7223 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 hath devouredH398(H8804) him; and lastH314 this NebuchadrezzarH5019 kingH4428 of BabylonH894 hath broken his bonesH6105(H8765).
18 Therefore Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria.
KJVTherefore thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478; Behold, I will punishH6485(H8802) the kingH4428 of BabylonH894 and his landH776, as I have punishedH6485(H8804) the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804.
19 I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he will feed on Carmel and Bashan. His soul will be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead.
KJVAnd I will bringH7725 IsraelH3478 againH7725(H8790) to his habitationH5116, and he shall feedH7462(H8804) on CarmelH3760 and BashanH1316, and his soulH5315 shall be satisfiedH7646(H8799) upon mountH2022 EphraimH669 and GileadH1568.
20 In those days, and in that time,” says Yahweh, “the iniquity of Israel will be sought for, and there will be none, also the sins of Judah, and they won’t be found; for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant.
KJVIn those daysH3117, and in that timeH6256, saithH5002(H8803) the LORDH3068, the iniquityH5771 of IsraelH3478 shall be sought forH1245(H8792), and there shall be none; and the sinsH2403 of JudahH3063, and they shall not be foundH4672(H8735): for I will pardonH5545(H8799) them whom I reserveH7604(H8686).
21 “Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod. Kill and utterly destroy after them,” says Yahweh, “and do according to all that I have commanded you.
KJVGo upH5927(H8798) against the landH776 of MerathaimH4850, even against it, and against the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of PekodH6489: wasteH2717(H8798) and utterly destroyH2763(H8687) afterH310 them, saithH5002(H8803) the LORDH3068, and doH6213(H8798) according to all that I have commandedH6680(H8765) thee.
22 A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.
KJVA soundH6963 of battleH4421 is in the landH776, and of greatH1419 destructionH7667.
23 How the hammer of the whole earth is cut apart and broken! How Babylon has become a desolation among the nations!
KJVHow is the hammerH6360 of the whole earthH776 cut asunderH1438(H8738) and brokenH7665(H8735)! how is BabylonH894 become a desolationH8047 among the nationsH1471!
24 I have laid a snare for you, and you are also taken, Babylon, and you weren’t aware. You are found, and also caught, because you have fought against Yahweh.
KJVI have laid a snareH3369(H8804) for thee, and thou art also takenH3920(H8738), O BabylonH894, and thou wast not awareH3045(H8804): thou art foundH4672(H8738), and also caughtH8610(H8738), because thou hast strivenH1624(H8694) against the LORDH3068.
25 Yahweh has opened his armory, and has brought out the weapons of his indignation; for the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, has a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.
KJVThe LORDH3068 hath openedH6605(H8804) his armouryH214, and hath brought forthH3318(H8686) the weaponsH3627 of his indignationH2195: for this is the workH4399 of the LordH136 GODH3069 of hostsH6635 in the landH776 of the ChaldeansH3778.
26 Come against her from the farthest border. Open her storehouses. Cast her up as heaps. Destroy her utterly. Let nothing of her be left.
KJVComeH935(H8798) against her from the utmost borderH7093, openH6605(H8798) her storehousesH3965: cast her upH5549(H8798) as heapsH6194, and destroy her utterlyH2763(H8685): let nothing of her be leftH7611.
27 Kill all her bulls. Let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their visitation.
KJVSlayH2717(H8798) all her bullocksH6499; let them go downH3381(H8799) to the slaughterH2874: woeH1945 unto them! for their dayH3117 is comeH935(H8802), the timeH6256 of their visitationH6486.
28 Listen to those who flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Yahweh our God, the vengeance of his temple.
KJVThe voiceH6963 of them that fleeH5127(H8801) and escape outH6405 of the landH776 of BabylonH894, to declareH5046(H8687) in ZionH6726 the vengeanceH5360 of the LORDH3068 our GodH430, the vengeanceH5360 of his templeH1964.
29 “Call together the archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Encamp against her all around. Let none of it escape. Pay her back according to her work. According to all that she has done, do to her; for she has been proud against Yahweh, against the Holy One of Israel.
KJVCall togetherH8085(H8685) the archersH7228 against BabylonH894: all ye that bendH1869(H8802) the bowH7198, campH2583(H8798) against it round aboutH5439; let none thereof escapeH6413: recompenseH7999(H8761) her according to her workH6467; according to all that she hath doneH6213(H8804), doH6213(H8798) unto her: for she hath been proudH2102(H8804) against the LORDH3068, against the Holy OneH6918 of IsraelH3478.
30 Therefore her young men will fall in her streets. All her men of war will be brought to silence in that day,” says Yahweh.
KJVTherefore shall her young menH970 fallH5307(H8799) in the streetsH7339, and all her menH582 of warH4421 shall be cut offH1826(H8735) in that dayH3117, saithH5002(H8803) the LORDH3068.
31 “Behold, I am against you, you proud one,” says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies; “for your day has come, the time that I will visit you.
KJVBehold, I am against thee, O thou most proudH2087, saithH5002(H8803) the LordH136 GODH3069 of hostsH6635: for thy dayH3117 is comeH935(H8802), the timeH6256 that I will visitH6485(H8804) thee.
32 The proud one will stumble and fall, and no one will raise him up. I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour all who are around him.”
KJVAnd the most proudH2087 shall stumbleH3782(H8804) and fallH5307(H8804), and none shall raise him upH6965(H8688): and I will kindleH3341(H8689) a fireH784 in his citiesH5892, and it shall devourH398(H8804) all round aboutH5439 him.
33 Yahweh of Armies says: “The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together. All who took them captive hold them fast. They refuse to let them go.
KJVThus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635; The childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 and the childrenH1121 of JudahH3063 were oppressedH6231(H8803) togetherH3162: and all that took them captivesH7617(H8802) held them fastH2388(H8689); they refusedH3985(H8765) to let them goH7971(H8763).
34 Their Redeemer is strong. Yahweh of Armies is his name. He will thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.
KJVTheir RedeemerH1350(H8802) is strongH2389; the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635 is his nameH8034: he shall throughlyH7378(H8800) pleadH7378(H8799) their causeH7379, that he may give restH7280(H8689) to the landH776, and disquietH7264(H8689) the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of BabylonH894.
35 “A sword is on the Chaldeans,” says Yahweh, “and on the inhabitants of Babylon, on her princes, and on her wise men.
KJVA swordH2719 is upon the ChaldeansH3778, saithH5002(H8803) the LORDH3068, and upon the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of BabylonH894, and upon her princesH8269, and upon her wiseH2450 men.
36 A sword is on the boasters, and they will become fools. A sword is on her mighty men, and they will be dismayed.
KJVA swordH2719 is upon the liarsH907; and they shall doteH2973(H8738): a swordH2719 is upon her mighty menH1368; and they shall be dismayedH2865(H8804).
37 A sword is on their horses, on their chariots, and on all the mixed people who are in the middle of her; and they will become as women. A sword is on her treasures, and they will be robbed.
KJVA swordH2719 is upon their horsesH5483, and upon their chariotsH7393, and upon all the mingled peopleH6153 that are in the midstH8432 of her; and they shall become as womenH802: a swordH2719 is upon her treasuresH214; and they shall be robbedH962(H8795).
38 A drought is on her waters, and they will be dried up; for it is a land of engraved images, and they are mad over idols.
KJVA droughtH2721 is upon her watersH4325; and they shall be dried upH3001(H8804): for it is the landH776 of graven imagesH6456, and they are madH1984(H8704) upon their idolsH367.
39 Therefore the wild animals of the desert with the wolves will dwell there. The ostriches will dwell therein. It will be inhabited no more forever, neither will it be lived in from generation to generation.
KJVTherefore the wild beasts of the desertH6728 with the wild beasts of the islandsH338 shall dwellH3427(H8799) there, and the owlsH1323H3284 shall dwellH3427(H8804) therein: and it shall be no more inhabitedH3427(H8799) for everH5331; neither shall it be dweltH7931(H8799) in from generationH1755 to generationH1755.
40 As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and its neighbor cities,” says Yahweh, “so no man will dwell there, neither will any son of man live therein.
KJVAs GodH430 overthrewH4114 SodomH5467 and GomorrahH6017 and the neighbourH7934 cities thereof, saithH5002(H8803) the LORDH3068; so shall no manH376 abideH3427(H8799) there, neither shall any sonH1121 of manH120 dwellH1481(H8799) therein.
41 “Behold, a people comes from the north. A great nation and many kings will be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth.
KJVBehold, a peopleH5971 shall comeH935(H8802) from the northH6828, and a greatH1419 nationH1471, and manyH7227 kingsH4428 shall be raised upH5782(H8735) from the coastsH3411 of the earthH776.
42 They take up bow and spear. They are cruel, and have no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea. They ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Babylon.
KJVThey shall holdH2388(H8686) the bowH7198 and the lanceH3591: they are cruelH394, and will not shew mercyH7355(H8762): their voiceH6963 shall roarH1993(H8799) like the seaH3220, and they shall rideH7392(H8799) upon horsesH5483, every one put in arrayH6186(H8803), like a manH376 to the battleH4421, against thee, O daughterH1323 of BabylonH894.
43 The king of Babylon has heard the news of them, and his hands become feeble. Anguish has taken hold of him, pains as of a woman in labor.
KJVThe kingH4428 of BabylonH894 hath heardH8085(H8804) the reportH8088 of them, and his handsH3027 waxed feebleH7503(H8804): anguishH6869 took holdH2388(H8689) of him, and pangsH2427 as of a woman in travailH3205(H8802).
44 Behold, the enemy will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against the strong habitation; for I will suddenly make them run away from it. Whoever is chosen, I will appoint him over it, for who is like me? Who will appoint me a time? Who is the shepherd who can stand before me?”
KJVBehold, he shall come upH5927(H8799) like a lionH738 from the swellingH1347 of JordanH3383 unto the habitationH5116 of the strongH386: but I will makeH7323 them suddenlyH7280(H8686) run awayH7323(H8686)(H8675)H7323(H8799) from her: and who is a chosenH977(H8803) man, that I may appointH6485(H8799) over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the timeH3259(H8686)? and who is that shepherdH7462(H8802) that will standH5975(H8799) beforeH6440 me?
45 Therefore hear the counsel of Yahweh that he has taken against Babylon; and his purposes that he has purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they will drag them away, even the little ones of the flock. Surely he will make their habitation desolate over them.
KJVTherefore hearH8085(H8798) ye the counselH6098 of the LORDH3068, that he hath takenH3289(H8804) against BabylonH894; and his purposesH4284, that he hath purposedH2803(H8804) against the landH776 of the ChaldeansH3778: Surely the leastH6810 of the flockH6629 shall draw them outH5498(H8799): surely he shall make their habitationH5116 desolateH8074(H8686) with them.
46 The earth trembles at the noise of the taking of Babylon. The cry is heard among the nations.
KJVAt the noiseH6963 of the takingH8610(H8738) of BabylonH894 the earthH776 is movedH7493(H8735), and the cryH2201 is heardH8085(H8738) among the nationsH1471.
