¹Yahweh’s word came to me again, saying,

² “What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

KJVWhat mean ye, that ye use^H4911^(H8802) this proverb^H4912 concerning the land^H127 of Israel^H3478, saying^H559^(H8800), The fathers^H1 have eaten^H398^(H8799) sour grapes^H1155, and the children's^H1121 teeth^H8127 are set on edge^H6949^(H8799)?

³ “As I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “you shall not use this proverb any more in Israel.

KJVAs I live^H2416, saith^H5002^(H8803) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069, ye shall not have occasion any more to use^H4911^(H8800) this proverb^H4912 in Israel^H3478.

⁴ Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine. The soul who sins, he shall die.

KJVBehold, all souls^H5315 are mine; as the soul^H5315 of the father^H1, so also the soul^H5315 of the son^H1121 is mine: the soul^H5315 that sinneth^H2398^(H8802), it shall die^H4191^(H8799).

⁵ “But if a man is just, and does that which is lawful and right,

⁶ and has not eaten on the mountains, hasn’t lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hasn’t defiled his neighbor’s wife, hasn’t come near a woman in her impurity,

KJVAnd hath not eaten^H398^(H8804) upon the mountains^H2022, neither hath lifted up^H5375^(H8804) his eyes^H5869 to the idols^H1544 of the house^H1004 of Israel^H3478, neither hath defiled^H2930^(H8765) his neighbour's^H7453 wife^H802, neither hath come near^H7126^(H8799) to a menstruous^H5079 woman^H802,

⁷ and has not wronged any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

KJVAnd hath not oppressed^H3238^(H8686) any^H376, but hath restored^H7725^(H8686) to the debtor^H2326 his pledge^H2258, hath spoiled^H1497^(H8799) none by violence^H1500, hath given^H5414^(H8799) his bread^H3899 to the hungry^H7457, and hath covered^H3680^(H8762) the naked^H5903 with a garment^H899;

⁸ he who hasn’t lent to them with interest, hasn’t taken any increase from them, who has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true justice between man and man,

⁹ has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live,” says the Lord Yahweh.

¹⁰ “If he fathers a son who is a robber who sheds blood, and who does any one of these things,

KJVIf he beget^H3205^(H8689) a son^H1121 that is a robber^H6530, a shedder^H8210^(H8802) of blood^H1818, and that doeth^H6213^(H8804) the like^H251 to any one^H259 of these things,

¹¹ or who does not do any of those things but has eaten at the mountain shrines and defiled his neighbor’s wife,

KJVAnd that doeth^H6213^(H8804) not any of those duties, but even hath eaten^H398^(H8804) upon the mountains^H2022, and defiled^H2930^(H8765) his neighbour's^H7453 wife^H802,

¹² has wronged the poor and needy, has taken by robbery, has not restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination,

KJVHath oppressed^H3238^(H8689) the poor^H6041 and needy^H34, hath spoiled^H1497^(H8804) by violence^H1500, hath not restored^H7725^(H8686) the pledge^H2258, and hath lifted up^H5375^(H8804) his eyes^H5869 to the idols^H1544, hath committed^H6213^(H8804) abomination^H8441,

¹³ has lent with interest, and has taken increase from the poor, shall he then live? He shall not live. He has done all these abominations. He shall surely die. His blood will be on him.

¹⁴ “Now, behold, if he fathers a son who sees all his father’s sins which he has done, and fears, and doesn’t do likewise,

KJVNow, lo, if he beget^H3205^(H8689) a son^H1121, that seeth^H7200^(H8799) all his father's^H1 sins^H2403 which he hath done^H6213^(H8804), and considereth^H7200^(H8799), and doeth^H6213^(H8799) not such like^H2004,

¹⁵ who hasn’t eaten on the mountains, hasn’t lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hasn’t defiled his neighbor’s wife,

¹⁶ hasn’t wronged any, hasn’t taken anything to pledge, hasn’t taken by robbery, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

¹⁷ who has withdrawn his hand from the poor, who hasn’t received interest or increase, has executed my ordinances, has walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father. He shall surely live.

¹⁸ As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he will die in his iniquity.

¹⁹ “Yet you say, ‘Why doesn’t the son bear the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he will surely live.

²⁰ The soul who sins, he shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.

²¹ “But if the wicked turns from all his sins that he has committed, and keeps all my statutes, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live. He shall not die.

²² None of his transgressions that he has committed will be remembered against him. In his righteousness that he has done, he shall live.

²³ Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked?” says the Lord Yahweh, “and not rather that he should return from his way, and live?

KJVHave I any pleasure^H2654^(H8799) at all^H2654^(H8800) that the wicked^H7563 should die^H4194? saith^H5002^(H8803) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069: and not that he should return^H7725^(H8800) from his ways^H1870, and live^H2421^(H8804)?

²⁴ “But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, should he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done will be remembered. In his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them he shall die.

²⁵ “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not equal.’ Hear now, house of Israel: Is my way not equal? Aren’t your ways unequal?

KJVYet ye say^H559^(H8804), The way^H1870 of the Lord^H136 is not equal^H8505^(H8735). Hear^H8085^(H8798) now, O house^H1004 of Israel^H3478; Is not my way^H1870 equal^H8505^(H8735)? are not your ways^H1870 unequal^H8505^(H8735)?

²⁶ When the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies in it, then he dies in his iniquity that he has done.

KJVWhen a righteous^H6662 man turneth away^H7725^(H8800) from his righteousness^H6666, and committeth^H6213^(H8804) iniquity^H5766, and dieth^H4191^(H8804) in them; for his iniquity^H5766 that he hath done^H6213^(H8804) shall he die^H4191^(H8799).

²⁷ Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive.

KJVAgain, when the wicked^H7563 man turneth away^H7725^(H8800) from his wickedness^H7564 that he hath committed^H6213^(H8804), and doeth^H6213^(H8799) that which is lawful^H4941 and right^H6666, he shall save^H2421 his soul^H5315 alive^H2421^(H8762).

²⁸ Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live. He shall not die.

²⁹ Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ House of Israel, aren’t my ways fair? Aren’t your ways unfair?

KJVYet saith^H559^(H8804) the house^H1004 of Israel^H3478, The way^H1870 of the Lord^H136 is not equal^H8505^(H8735). O house^H1004 of Israel^H3478, are not my ways^H1870 equal^H8505^(H8735)? are not your ways^H1870 unequal^H8505^(H8735)?

³⁰ “Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways,” says the Lord Yahweh. “Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity will not be your ruin.

KJVTherefore I will judge^H8199^(H8799) you, O house^H1004 of Israel^H3478, every one^H376 according to his ways^H1870, saith^H5002^(H8803) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069. Repent^H7725^(H8798), and turn^H7725^(H8685) yourselves from all your transgressions^H6588; so iniquity^H5771 shall not be your ruin^H4383.

³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit. For why will you die, house of Israel?

³² For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies,” says the Lord Yahweh. “Therefore turn yourselves, and live!

² “Son of man, tell a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel;

KJVSon^H1121 of man^H120, put forth^H2330^(H8798) a riddle^H2420, and speak^H4911^(H8798) a parable^H4912 unto the house^H1004 of Israel^H3478;

³ and say, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers which had various colors, came to Lebanon and took the top of the cedar.

KJVAnd say^H559^(H8804), Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069; A great^H1419 eagle^H5404 with great^H1419 wings^H3671, longwinged^H83^H750, full^H4392 of feathers^H5133, which had divers colours^H7553, came^H935^(H8804) unto Lebanon^H3844, and took^H3947^(H8799) the highest branch^H6788 of the cedar^H730:

⁴ He cropped off the topmost of its young twigs, and carried it to a land of traffic. He planted it in a city of merchants.

⁶ It grew and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and its roots were under him. So it became a vine, produced branches, and shot out sprigs.

⁷ “‘“There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers. Behold, this vine bent its roots toward him, and shot out its branches toward him, from the ground where it was planted, that he might water it.

⁸ It was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might produce branches and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a good vine.”’

⁹ “Say, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “Will it prosper? Won’t he pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, that it may wither, that all its fresh springing leaves may wither? It can’t be raised from its roots by a strong arm or many people.

¹⁰ Yes, behold, being planted, will it prosper? Won’t it utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It will wither in the ground where it grew.”’”

¹¹ Moreover Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

¹² “Say now to the rebellious house, ‘Don’t you know what these things mean?’ Tell them, ‘Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took its king, and its princes, and brought them to him to Babylon.

¹³ He took one of the royal offspring, and made a covenant with him. He also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land,

¹⁴ that the kingdom might be brought low, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.

¹⁵ But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Will he prosper? Will he who does such things escape? Will he break the covenant, and still escape?

¹⁶ “‘As I live,’ says the Lord Yahweh, ‘surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he broke, even with him in the middle of Babylon he will die.

KJVAs I live^H2416, saith^H5002^(H8803) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069, surely in the place^H4725 where the king^H4428 dwelleth that made him king^H4427^(H8688), whose oath^H423 he despised^H959^(H8804), and whose covenant^H1285 he brake^H6565^(H8689), even with him in the midst^H8432 of Babylon^H894 he shall die^H4191^(H8799).

¹⁷ Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company won’t help him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts to cut off many persons.

KJVNeither shall Pharaoh^H6547 with his mighty^H1419 army^H2428 and great^H7227 company^H6951 make^H6213^(H8799) for him in the war^H4421, by casting up^H8210^(H8800) mounts^H5550, and building^H1129^(H8800) forts^H1785, to cut off^H3772^(H8687) many^H7227 persons^H5315:

¹⁸ For he has despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet has done all these things. He won’t escape.

¹⁹ “Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: ‘As I live, I will surely bring on his own head my oath that he has despised and my covenant that he has broken.

KJVTherefore thus saith^H559^(H8804) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069; As I live^H2416, surely mine oath^H423 that he hath despised^H959^(H8804), and my covenant^H1285 that he hath broken^H6331^(H8689), even it will I recompense^H5414^(H8804) upon his own head^H7218.

²⁰ I will spread my net on him, and he will be taken in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon, and will enter into judgment with him there for his trespass that he has trespassed against me.

KJVAnd I will spread^H6566^(H8804) my net^H7568 upon him, and he shall be taken^H8610^(H8738) in my snare^H4686, and I will bring^H935^(H8689) him to Babylon^H894, and will plead^H8199^(H8738) with him there for his trespass^H4603^(H8804) that he hath trespassed^H4604 against me.

²¹ All his fugitives in all his bands will fall by the sword, and those who remain will be scattered toward every wind. Then you will know that I, Yahweh, have spoken it.’

²² “The Lord Yahweh says: ‘I will also take some of the lofty top of the cedar, and will plant it. I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain.

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069; I will also take^H3947^(H8804) of the highest branch^H6788 of the high^H7311^(H8802) cedar^H730, and will set^H5414^(H8804) it; I will crop off^H6998^(H8799) from the top^H7218 of his young twigs^H3127 a tender one^H7390, and will plant^H8362^(H8804) it upon an high^H1364 mountain^H2022 and eminent^H8524^(H8803):

²³ I will plant it in the mountain of the height of Israel; and it will produce boughs, and bear fruit, and be a good cedar. Birds of every kind will dwell in the shade of its branches.
