¹Now Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

² “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”

KJVArise^H6965^(H8798), go^H3212^(H8798) to Nineveh^H5210, that great^H1419 city^H5892, and cry^H7121^(H8798) against it; for their wickedness^H7451 is come up^H5927^(H8804) before^H6440 me.

³ But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.

⁴ But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.

KJVBut the LORD^H3068 sent out^H2904^(H8689) a great^H1419 wind^H7307 into the sea^H3220, and there was a mighty^H1419 tempest^H5591 in the sea^H3220, so that the ship^H591 was like^H2803^(H8765) to be broken^H7665^(H8736).

⁵ Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.

⁶ So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”

KJVSo the shipmaster^H7227^H2259 came^H7126^(H8799) to him, and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper^H7290^(H8737)? arise^H6965^(H8798), call^H7121^(H8798) upon thy God^H430, if so be that God^H430 will think^H6245^(H8691) upon us, that we perish^H6^(H8799) not.

⁷ They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799) every one^H376 to his fellow^H7453, Come^H3212^(H8798), and let us cast^H5307^(H8686) lots^H1486, that we may know^H3045^(H8799) for whose cause^H7945 this evil^H7451 is upon us. So they cast^H5307^(H8686) lots^H1486, and the lot^H1486 fell^H5307^(H8799) upon Jonah^H3124.

⁸ Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) they unto him, Tell^H5046^(H8685) us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil^H7451 is upon us; What is thine occupation^H4399? and whence^H370 comest^H935^(H8799) thou? what is thy country^H776? and of what people^H5971 art thou?

⁹ He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto them, I am an Hebrew^H5680; and I fear^H3373 the LORD^H3068, the God^H430 of heaven^H8064, which hath made^H6213^(H8804) the sea^H3220 and the dry^H3004 land.

¹⁰ Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

KJVThen were the men^H582 exceedingly^H1419^H3374 afraid^H3372^(H8799), and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Why hast thou done^H6213^(H8804) this? For the men^H582 knew^H3045^(H8804) that he fled^H1272^(H8802) from the presence^H6440 of the LORD^H3068, because he had told^H5046^(H8689) them.

¹¹ Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) they unto him, What shall we do^H6213^(H8799) unto thee, that the sea^H3220 may be calm^H8367^(H8799) unto us? for the sea^H3220 wrought^H1980^(H8802), and was tempestuous^H5590^(H8802).

¹² He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Take me up^H5375^(H8798), and cast me forth^H2904^(H8685) into the sea^H3220; so shall the sea^H3220 be calm^H8367^(H8799) unto you: for I know^H3045^(H8802) that for my sake^H7945 this great^H1419 tempest^H5591 is upon you.

¹³ Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.

KJVNevertheless the men^H582 rowed hard^H2864^(H8799) to bring^H7725^(H8687) it to the land^H3004; but they could^H3201^(H8804) not: for the sea^H3220 wrought^H1980^(H8802), and was tempestuous^H5590^(H8802) against them.

¹⁴ Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”

KJVWherefore they cried^H7121^(H8799) unto the LORD^H3068, and said^H559^(H8799), We beseech thee^H577, O LORD^H3068, we beseech thee, let us not perish^H6^(H8799) for this man's^H376 life^H5315, and lay^H5414^(H8799) not upon us innocent^H5355^(H8675)^H5355 blood^H1818: for thou, O LORD^H3068, hast done^H6213^(H8804) as it pleased^H2654^(H8804) thee.

¹⁵ So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.

¹⁶ Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vows.

KJVThen the men^H582 feared^H3372^(H8799) the LORD^H3068 exceedingly^H1419^H3374, and offered^H2076^(H8799) a sacrifice^H2077 unto the LORD^H3068, and made^H5087^(H8799) vows^H5088.

¹⁷ Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

KJVNow the LORD^H3068 had prepared^H4487^(H8762) a great^H1419 fish^H1709 to swallow up^H1104^(H8800) Jonah^H3124. And Jonah^H3124 was in the belly^H4578 of the fish^H1709 three^H7969 days^H3117 and three^H7969 nights^H3915.

¹The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord Yahweh says about Edom. We have heard news from Yahweh, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, “Arise, and let’s rise up against her in battle.

Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069 concerning Edom^H123; We have heard^H8085^(H8804) a rumour^H8052 from the LORD^H3068, and an ambassador^H6735 is sent^H7971^(H8795) among the heathen^H1471, Arise^H6965^(H8798) ye, and let us rise up^H6965^(H8799) against her in battle^H4421.

² Behold, I have made you small among the nations. You are greatly despised.

KJVBehold, I have made^H5414^(H8804) thee small^H6996 among the heathen^H1471: thou art greatly^H3966 despised^H959^(H8803).

³ The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’

KJVThe pride^H2087 of thine heart^H3820 hath deceived^H5377^(H8689) thee, thou that dwellest^H7931^(H8802) in the clefts^H2288 of the rock^H5553, whose habitation^H3427^(H8800) is high^H4791; that saith^H559^(H8802) in his heart^H3820, Who shall bring me down^H3381^(H8686) to the ground^H776?

⁴ Though you mount on high as the eagle, and though your nest is set among the stars, I will bring you down from there,” says Yahweh.

KJVThough thou exalt^H1361^(H8686) thyself as the eagle^H5404, and though thou set^H7760^(H8800) thy nest^H7064 among the stars^H3556, thence will I bring thee down^H3381^(H8686), saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068.

⁵ “If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—oh, what disaster awaits you—wouldn’t they only steal until they had enough? If grape pickers came to you, wouldn’t they leave some gleaning grapes?

KJVIf thieves^H1590 came^H935^(H8804) to thee, if robbers^H7703^(H8802) by night^H3915,(how^H349 art thou cut off^H1820^(H8738)!) would they not have stolen^H1589^(H8799) till they had enough^H1767? if the grapegatherers^H1219^(H8802) came^H935^(H8804) to thee, would they not leave^H7604^(H8686) some grapes^H5955?

⁶ How Esau will be ransacked! How his hidden treasures are sought out!

KJVHow are the things of Esau^H6215 searched out^H2664^(H8738)! how are his hidden^H4710 things sought up^H1158^(H8738)!

⁷ All the men of your alliance have brought you on your way, even to the border. The men who were at peace with you have deceived you, and prevailed against you. Friends who eat your bread lay a snare under you. There is no understanding in him.”

KJVAll the men^H582 of thy confederacy^H1285 have brought^H7971^(H8765) thee even to the border^H1366: the men^H582 that were at peace^H7965 with thee have deceived^H5377^(H8689) thee, and prevailed^H3201^(H8804) against thee; they that eat thy bread^H3899 have laid^H7760^(H8799) a wound^H4204 under thee: there is none understanding^H8394 in him.

⁸ “Won’t I in that day”, says Yahweh, “destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mountain of Esau?

KJVShall I not in that day^H3117, saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068, even destroy^H6^(H8689) the wise^H2450 men out of Edom^H123, and understanding^H8394 out of the mount^H2022 of Esau^H6215?

⁹ Your mighty men, Teman, will be dismayed, to the end that everyone may be cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter.

KJVAnd thy mighty^H1368 men, O Teman^H8487, shall be dismayed^H2865^(H8804), to the end that every one^H376 of the mount^H2022 of Esau^H6215 may be cut off^H3772^(H8735) by slaughter^H6993.

¹⁰ For the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.

KJVFor thy violence^H2555 against thy brother^H251 Jacob^H3290 shame^H955 shall cover^H3680^(H8762) thee, and thou shalt be cut off^H3772^(H8738) for ever^H5769.

¹¹ In the day that you stood on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance and foreigners entered into his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, even you were like one of them.

KJVIn the day^H3117 that thou stoodest^H5975^(H8800) on the other side, in the day^H3117 that the strangers^H2114^(H8801) carried away captive^H7617^(H8800) his forces^H2428, and foreigners^H5237 entered^H935^(H8804) into his gates^H8179, and cast^H3032^(H8804) lots^H1486 upon Jerusalem^H3389, even thou wast as one^H259 of them.

¹² But don’t look down on your brother in the day of his disaster, and don’t rejoice over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction. Don’t speak proudly in the day of distress.

KJVBut thou shouldest not have looked^H7200^(H8799) on the day^H3117 of thy brother^H251 in the day^H3117 that he became a stranger^H5235; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced^H8055^(H8799) over the children^H1121 of Judah^H3063 in the day^H3117 of their destruction^H6^(H8800); neither shouldest thou have spoken^H6310 proudly^H1431^(H8686) in the day^H3117 of distress^H6869.

¹³ Don’t enter into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity. Don’t look down on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither seize their wealth on the day of their calamity.

KJVThou shouldest not have entered^H935^(H8799) into the gate^H8179 of my people^H5971 in the day^H3117 of their calamity^H343; yea, thou shouldest not have looked^H7200^(H8799) on their affliction^H7451 in the day^H3117 of their calamity^H343, nor have laid^H7971^(H8799) hands on their substance^H2428 in the day^H3117 of their calamity^H343;

¹⁴ Don’t stand in the crossroads to cut off those of his who escape. Don’t deliver up those of his who remain in the day of distress.

KJVNeither shouldest thou have stood^H5975^(H8799) in the crossway^H6563, to cut off^H3772^(H8687) those of his that did escape^H6412; neither shouldest thou have delivered up^H5462^(H8686) those of his that did remain^H8300 in the day^H3117 of distress^H6869.

¹⁵ For the day of Yahweh is near all the nations! As you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return upon your own head.

KJVFor the day^H3117 of the LORD^H3068 is near^H7138 upon all the heathen^H1471: as thou hast done^H6213^(H8804), it shall be done^H6213^(H8735) unto thee: thy reward^H1576 shall return^H7725^(H8799) upon thine own head^H7218.

¹⁶ For as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. Yes, they will drink, swallow down, and will be as though they had not been.

KJVFor as ye have drunk^H8354^(H8804) upon my holy^H6944 mountain^H2022, so shall all the heathen^H1471 drink^H8354^(H8799) continually^H8548, yea, they shall drink^H8354^(H8804), and they shall swallow down^H3886^(H8804), and they shall be as though they had not^H3808 been.

¹⁷ But in Mount Zion, there will be those who escape, and it will be holy. The house of Jacob will possess their possessions.

KJVBut upon mount^H2022 Zion^H6726 shall be deliverance^H6413, and there shall be holiness^H6944; and the house^H1004 of Jacob^H3290 shall possess^H3423^(H8804) their possessions^H4180.

¹⁸ The house of Jacob will be a fire, the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble. They will burn among them and devour them. There will not be any remaining to the house of Esau.” Indeed, Yahweh has spoken.

¹⁹ Those of the South will possess the mountain of Esau, and those of the lowland, the Philistines. They will possess the field of Ephraim, and the field of Samaria. Benjamin will possess Gilead.

KJVAnd they of the south^H5045 shall possess^H3423^(H8804) the mount^H2022 of Esau^H6215; and they of the plain^H8219 the Philistines^H6430: and they shall possess^H3423^(H8804) the fields^H7704 of Ephraim^H669, and the fields^H7704 of Samaria^H8111: and Benjamin^H1144 shall possess Gilead^H1568.

²⁰ The captives of this army of the children of Israel, who are among the Canaanites, will possess even to Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, who are in Sepharad, will possess the cities of the Negev.

KJVAnd the captivity^H1546 of this host^H2426 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 shall possess that of the Canaanites^H3669, even unto Zarephath^H6886; and the captivity^H1546 of Jerusalem^H3389, which is in Sepharad^H5614, shall possess^H3423^(H8799) the cities^H5892 of the south^H5045.

²¹ Saviors will go up on Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the kingdom will be Yahweh’s.

KJVAnd saviours^H3467^(H8688) shall come up^H5927^(H8804) on mount^H2022 Zion^H6726 to judge^H8199^(H8800) the mount^H2022 of Esau^H6215; and the kingdom^H4410 shall be the LORD'S^H3068.
