¹The whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled themselves together at Shiloh, and set up the Tent of Meeting there. The land was subdued before them.

² Seven tribes remained among the children of Israel, which had not yet divided their inheritance.

KJVAnd there remained^H3498^(H8735) among the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 seven^H7651 tribes^H7626, which had not yet received^H2505^(H8804) their inheritance^H5159.

³ Joshua said to the children of Israel, “How long will you neglect to go in to possess the land, which Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has given you?

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 said^H559^(H8799) unto the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, How long are ye slack^H7503^(H8693) to go^H935^(H8800) to possess^H3423^(H8800) the land^H776, which the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of your fathers^H1 hath given^H5414^(H8804) you?

⁴ Appoint for yourselves three men from each tribe. I will send them, and they shall arise, walk through the land, and describe it according to their inheritance; then they shall come to me.

⁵ They shall divide it into seven portions. Judah shall live in his borders on the south, and the house of Joseph shall live in their borders on the north.

⁶ You shall survey the land into seven parts, and bring the description here to me; and I will cast lots for you here before Yahweh our God.

KJVYe shall therefore describe^H3789^(H8799) the land^H776 into seven^H7651 parts^H2506, and bring^H935^(H8689) the description hither to me, that I may cast^H3384^(H8804) lots^H1486 for you here before^H6440 the LORD^H3068 our God^H430.

⁷ However, the Levites have no portion among you; for the priesthood of Yahweh is their inheritance. Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance east of the Jordan, which Moses the servant of Yahweh gave them.”

⁸ The men arose and went. Joshua commanded those who went to survey the land, saying, “Go walk through the land, survey it, and come again to me. I will cast lots for you here before Yahweh in Shiloh.”

⁹ The men went and passed through the land, and surveyed it by cities into seven portions in a book. They came to Joshua to the camp at Shiloh.

KJVAnd the men^H582 went^H3212^(H8799) and passed through^H5674^(H8799) the land^H776, and described^H3789^(H8799) it by cities^H5892 into seven^H7651 parts^H2506 in a book^H5612, and came^H935^(H8799) again to Joshua^H3091 to the host^H4264 at Shiloh^H7887.

¹⁰ Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before Yahweh. There Joshua divided the land to the children of Israel according to their divisions.

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 cast^H7993^(H8686) lots^H1486 for them in Shiloh^H7887 before^H6440 the LORD^H3068: and there Joshua^H3091 divided^H2505^(H8762) the land^H776 unto the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 according to their divisions^H4256.

¹¹ The lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families. The border of their lot went out between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.

KJVAnd the lot^H1486 of the tribe^H4294 of the children^H1121 of Benjamin^H1144 came up^H5927^(H8799) according to their families^H4940: and the coast^H1366 of their lot^H1486 came forth^H3318^(H8799) between the children^H1121 of Judah^H3063 and the children^H1121 of Joseph^H3130.

¹² Their border on the north quarter was from the Jordan. The border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill country westward. It ended at the wilderness of Beth Aven.

KJVAnd their border^H1366 on the north^H6828 side^H6285 was from Jordan^H3383; and the border^H1366 went up^H5927^(H8804) to the side^H3802 of Jericho^H3405 on the north^H6828 side, and went up^H5927^(H8804) through the mountains^H2022 westward^H3220; and the goings out^H8444 thereof were at the wilderness^H4057 of Bethaven^H1007.

¹³ The border passed along from there to Luz, to the side of Luz (also called Bethel), southward. The border went down to Ataroth Addar, by the mountain that lies on the south of Beth Horon the lower.

KJVAnd the border^H1366 went over^H5674^(H8804) from thence toward Luz^H3870, to the side^H3802 of Luz^H3870, which is Bethel^H1008, southward^H5045; and the border^H1366 descended^H3381^(H8804) to Atarothadar^H5853, near the hill^H2022 that lieth on the south side^H5045 of the nether^H8481 Bethhoron^H1032.

¹⁴ The border extended, and turned around on the west quarter southward, from the mountain that lies before Beth Horon southward; and ended at Kiriath Baal (also called Kiriath Jearim), a city of the children of Judah. This was the west quarter.

KJVAnd the border^H1366 was drawn^H8388^(H8804) thence, and compassed^H5437^(H8738) the corner^H6285 of the sea^H3220 southward^H5045, from the hill^H2022 that lieth before^H6440 Bethhoron^H1032 southward^H5045; and the goings out^H8444 thereof were at Kirjathbaal^H7154, which is Kirjathjearim^H7157, a city^H5892 of the children^H1121 of Judah^H3063: this was the west^H3220 quarter^H6285.

¹⁵ The south quarter was from the farthest part of Kiriath Jearim. The border went out westward, and went out to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah.

KJVAnd the south^H5045 quarter^H6285 was from the end^H7097 of Kirjathjearim^H7157, and the border^H1366 went out^H3318^(H8804) on the west^H3220, and went out^H3318^(H8804) to the well^H4599 of waters^H4325 of Nephtoah^H5318:

¹⁶ The border went down to the farthest part of the mountain that lies before the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is in the valley of Rephaim northward. It went down to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of the Jebusite southward, and went down to En Rogel.

KJVAnd the border^H1366 came down^H3381^(H8804) to the end^H7097 of the mountain^H2022 that lieth before^H6440 the valley^H1516 of the son^H1121 of Hinnom^H2011, and which is in the valley^H6010 of the giants^H7497 on the north^H6828, and descended^H3381^(H8804) to the valley^H1516 of Hinnom^H2011, to the side^H3802 of Jebusi^H2983 on the south^H5045, and descended^H3381^(H8804) to Enrogel^H5883,

¹⁷ It extended northward, went out at En Shemesh, and went out to Geliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim. It went down to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben.

KJVAnd was drawn^H8388^(H8804) from the north^H6828, and went forth^H3318^(H8804) to Enshemesh^H5885, and went forth^H3318^(H8804) toward Geliloth^H1553, which is over against^H5227 the going up^H4608 of Adummim^H131, and descended^H3381^(H8804) to the stone^H68 of Bohan^H932 the son^H1121 of Reuben^H7205,

¹⁸ It passed along to the side opposite the Arabah northward, and went down to the Arabah.

KJVAnd passed along^H5674^(H8804) toward the side^H3802 over against^H4136 Arabah^H6160 northward^H6828, and went down^H3381^(H8804) unto Arabah^H6160:

¹⁹ The border passed along to the side of Beth Hoglah northward; and the border ended at the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan. This was the south border.

KJVAnd the border^H1366 passed along^H5674^(H8804) to the side^H3802 of Bethhoglah^H1031 northward^H6828: and the outgoings^H8444 of the border^H1366 were at the north^H6828 bay^H3956 of the salt^H4417 sea^H3220 at the south^H5045 end^H7097 of Jordan^H3383: this was the south^H5045 coast^H1366.

²⁰ The Jordan was its border on the east quarter. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by the borders around it, according to their families.

KJVAnd Jordan^H3383 was the border^H1379^(H8799) of it on the east^H6924 side^H6285. This was the inheritance^H5159 of the children^H1121 of Benjamin^H1144, by the coasts^H1367 thereof round about^H5439, according to their families^H4940.

²¹ Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho, Beth Hoglah, Emek Keziz,

KJVNow the cities^H5892 of the tribe^H4294 of the children^H1121 of Benjamin^H1144 according to their families^H4940 were Jericho^H3405, and Bethhoglah^H1031, and the valley^H6010 of Keziz^H7104,

²⁴ Chephar Ammoni, Ophni, and Geba; twelve cities with their villages.

²⁸ Zelah, Eleph, the Jebusite (also called Jerusalem), Gibeath, and Kiriath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.

KJVAnd Zelah^H6762, Eleph^H507, and Jebusi^H2983, which is Jerusalem^H3389, Gibeath^H1394, and Kirjath^H7157; fourteen^H702^H6240 cities^H5892 with their villages^H2691. This is the inheritance^H5159 of the children^H1121 of Benjamin^H1144 according to their families^H4940.

¹This was the lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. As for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.

These were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.

³ But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

⁴ They came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the princes, saying, “Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore according to the commandment of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.

KJVAnd they came near^H7126^(H8799) before^H6440 Eleazar^H499 the priest^H3548, and before^H6440 Joshua^H3091 the son^H1121 of Nun^H5126, and before^H6440 the princes^H5387, saying^H559^(H8800), The LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765) Moses^H4872 to give^H5414^(H8800) us an inheritance^H5159 among^H8432 our brethren^H251. Therefore according to the commandment^H6310 of the LORD^H3068 he gave^H5414^(H8799) them an inheritance^H5159 among^H8432 the brethren^H251 of their father^H1.

⁵ Ten parts fell to Manasseh, in addition to the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan;

KJVAnd there fell^H5307^(H8799) ten^H6235 portions^H2256 to Manasseh^H4519, beside the land^H776 of Gilead^H1568 and Bashan^H1316, which were on the other side^H5676 Jordan^H3383;

⁶ because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the sons of Manasseh.

KJVBecause the daughters^H1323 of Manasseh^H4519 had^H5157^(H8804) an inheritance^H5159 among^H8432 his sons^H1121: and the rest^H3498^(H8737) of Manasseh's^H4519 sons^H1121 had the land^H776 of Gilead^H1568.

⁷ The border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, which is before Shechem. The border went along to the right hand, to the inhabitants of En Tappuah.

KJVAnd the coast^H1366 of Manasseh^H4519 was from Asher^H836 to Michmethah^H4366, that lieth before^H6440 Shechem^H7927; and the border^H1366 went along^H1980^(H8804) on the right hand^H3225 unto the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Entappuah^H5887.

⁸ The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh; but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim.

KJVNow Manasseh^H4519 had the land^H776 of Tappuah^H8599: but Tappuah^H8599 on the border^H1366 of Manasseh^H4519 belonged to the children^H1121 of Ephraim^H669;

⁹ The border went down to the brook of Kanah, southward of the brook. These cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook, and ended at the sea.

KJVAnd the coast^H1366 descended^H3381^(H8804) unto the river^H5158 Kanah^H7071, southward^H5045 of the river^H5158: these cities^H5892 of Ephraim^H669 are among^H8432 the cities^H5892 of Manasseh^H4519: the coast^H1366 of Manasseh^H4519 also was on the north side^H6828 of the river^H5158, and the outgoings^H8444 of it were at the sea^H3220:

¹⁰ Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was Manasseh’s, and the sea was his border. They reached to Asher on the north, and to Issachar on the east.

KJVSouthward^H5045 it was Ephraim's^H669, and northward^H6828 it was Manasseh's^H4519, and the sea^H3220 is his border^H1366; and they met together^H6293^(H8799) in Asher^H836 on the north^H6828, and in Issachar^H3485 on the east^H4217.

¹¹ Manasseh had three heights in Issachar, in Asher Beth Shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns.

KJVAnd Manasseh^H4519 had in Issachar^H3485 and in Asher^H836 Bethshean^H1052 and her towns^H1323, and Ibleam^H2991 and her towns^H1323, and the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Dor^H1756 and her towns^H1323, and the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Endor^H5874 and her towns^H1323, and the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Taanach^H8590 and her towns^H1323, and the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Megiddo^H4023 and her towns^H1323, even three^H7969 countries^H5316.

¹² Yet the children of Manasseh couldn’t drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

KJVYet the children^H1121 of Manasseh^H4519 could^H3201^(H8804) not drive out^H3423^(H8687) the inhabitants of those cities^H5892; but the Canaanites^H3669 would^H2974^(H8686) dwell^H3427^(H8800) in that land^H776.

¹³ When the children of Israel had grown strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and didn’t utterly drive them out.

KJVYet it came to pass, when the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 were waxen strong^H2388^(H8804), that they put^H5414^(H8799) the Canaanites^H3669 to tribute^H4522; but did not utterly^H3423^(H8687) drive them out^H3423^(H8689).

¹⁴ The children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given me just one lot and one part for an inheritance, since we are a numerous people, because Yahweh has blessed us so far?”

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Joseph^H3130 spake^H1696^(H8762) unto Joshua^H3091, saying^H559^(H8800), Why hast thou given^H5414^(H8804) me but one^H259 lot^H1486 and one^H259 portion^H2256 to inherit^H5159, seeing I am a great^H7227 people^H5971, forasmuch as^H5704 the LORD^H3068 hath blessed^H1288^(H8765) me hitherto^H3541?

¹⁵ Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest, and clear land for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.”

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 answered^H559^(H8799) them, If thou be a great^H7227 people^H5971, then get thee up^H5927^(H8798) to the wood^H3293 country, and cut down^H1254^(H8765) for thyself there in the land^H776 of the Perizzites^H6522 and of the giants^H7497, if mount^H2022 Ephraim^H669 be too narrow^H213^(H8804) for thee.

¹⁶ The children of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us. All the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are in Beth Shean and its towns, and those who are in the valley of Jezreel.”

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Joseph^H3130 said^H559^(H8799), The hill^H2022 is not enough^H4672^(H8735) for us: and all the Canaanites^H3669 that dwell^H3427^(H8802) in the land^H776 of the valley^H6010 have chariots^H7393 of iron^H1270, both they who are of Bethshean^H1052 and her towns^H1323, and they who are of the valley^H6010 of Jezreel^H3157.

¹⁷ Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, that is, to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, “You are a numerous people, and have great power. You shall not have one lot only;

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 spake^H559^(H8799) unto the house^H1004 of Joseph^H3130, even to Ephraim^H669 and to Manasseh^H4519, saying^H559^(H8800), Thou art a great^H7227 people^H5971, and hast great^H1419 power^H3581: thou shalt not have one^H259 lot^H1486 only:

¹⁸ but the hill country shall be yours. Although it is a forest, you shall cut it down, and it’s farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.”

KJVBut the mountain^H2022 shall be thine; for it is a wood^H3293, and thou shalt cut it down^H1254^(H8765): and the outgoings^H8444 of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out^H3423^(H8686) the Canaanites^H3669, though they have iron^H1270 chariots^H7393, and though they be strong^H2389.
