¹After many days, when Yahweh had given rest to Israel from their enemies all around, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years,

KJVAnd it came to pass a long^H7227 time^H3117 after^H310 that the LORD^H3068 had given rest^H5117^(H8689) unto Israel^H3478 from all their enemies^H341^(H8802) round about^H5439, that Joshua^H3091 waxed old^H2204^(H8804) and stricken^H935^(H8804) in age^H3117.

² Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders and for their heads, and for their judges and for their officers, and said to them, “I am old and well advanced in years.

³ You have seen all that Yahweh your God has done to all these nations because of you; for it is Yahweh your God who has fought for you.

KJVAnd ye have seen^H7200^(H8804) all that the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 hath done^H6213^(H8804) unto all these nations^H1471 because^H6440 of you; for the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 is he that hath fought^H3898^(H8737) for you.

⁴ Behold, I have allotted to you these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even to the great sea toward the going down of the sun.

KJVBehold^H7200^(H8798), I have divided^H5307^(H8689) unto you by lot these nations^H1471 that remain^H7604^(H8737), to be an inheritance^H5159 for your tribes^H7626, from Jordan^H3383, with all the nations^H1471 that I have cut off^H3772^(H8689), even unto the great^H1419 sea^H3220 westward^H3996^H8121.

⁵ Yahweh your God will thrust them out from before you, and drive them from out of your sight. You shall possess their land, as Yahweh your God spoke to you.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 your God^H430, he shall expel^H1920^(H8799) them from before^H6440 you, and drive^H3423^(H8689) them from out of your sight^H6440; and ye shall possess^H3423^(H8804) their land^H776, as the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 hath promised^H1696^(H8765) unto you.

⁶ “Therefore be very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that you not turn away from it to the right hand or to the left;

⁷ that you not come among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow down yourselves to them;

⁸ but hold fast to Yahweh your God, as you have done to this day.

⁹ “For Yahweh has driven great and strong nations out from before you. But as for you, no man has stood before you to this day.

KJVFor the LORD^H3068 hath driven out^H3423^(H8686) from before^H6440 you great^H1419 nations^H1471 and strong^H6099: but as for you, no man^H376 hath been able to stand^H5975^(H8804) before^H6440 you unto this day^H3117.

¹⁰ One man of you shall chase a thousand; for it is Yahweh your God who fights for you, as he spoke to you.

KJVOne^H259 man^H376 of you shall chase^H7291^(H8799) a thousand^H505: for the LORD^H3068 your God^H430, he it is that fighteth^H3898^(H8737) for you, as he hath promised^H1696^(H8765) you.

¹¹ Take good heed therefore to yourselves, that you love Yahweh your God.

¹² “But if you do at all go back, and hold fast to the remnant of these nations, even these who remain among you, and make marriages with them, and go in to them, and they to you;

KJVElse if ye do in any wise^H7725^(H8800) go back^H7725^(H8799), and cleave^H1692^(H8804) unto the remnant^H3499 of these nations^H1471, even these that remain^H7604^(H8737) among you, and shall make marriages^H2859^(H8694) with them, and go in^H935^(H8804) unto them, and they to you:

¹³ know for a certainty that Yahweh your God will no longer drive these nations from out of your sight; but they shall be a snare and a trap to you, a scourge in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which Yahweh your God has given you.

¹⁴ “Behold, today I am going the way of all the earth. You know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which Yahweh your God spoke concerning you. All have happened to you. Not one thing has failed of it.

KJVAnd, behold, this day^H3117 I am going^H1980^(H8802) the way^H1870 of all the earth^H776: and ye know^H3045^(H8804) in all your hearts^H3824 and in all your souls^H5315, that not one^H259 thing^H1697 hath failed^H5307^(H8804) of all the good^H2896 things^H1697 which the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 spake^H1696^(H8765) concerning you; all are come to pass^H935^(H8804) unto you, and not one^H259 thing^H1697 hath failed^H5307^(H8804) thereof.

¹⁵ It shall happen that as all the good things have come on you of which Yahweh your God spoke to you, so Yahweh will bring on you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land which Yahweh your God has given you,

KJVTherefore it shall come to pass, that as all good^H2896 things^H1697 are come^H935^(H8804) upon you, which the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 promised^H1696^(H8765) you; so shall the LORD^H3068 bring^H935^(H8686) upon you all evil^H7451 things^H1697, until he have destroyed^H8045^(H8687) you from off this good^H2896 land^H127 which the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 hath given^H5414^(H8804) you.

¹⁶ when you disobey the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow down yourselves to them. Then Yahweh’s anger will be kindled against you, and you will perish quickly from off the good land which he has given to you.”

¹Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,

² and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, and have listened to my voice in all that I commanded you.

KJVAnd said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Ye have kept^H8104^(H8804) all that Moses^H4872 the servant^H5650 of the LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765) you, and have obeyed^H8085^(H8799) my voice^H6963 in all that I commanded^H6680^(H8765) you:

³ You have not left your brothers these many days to this day, but have performed the duty of the commandment of Yahweh your God.

⁴ Now Yahweh your God has given rest to your brothers, as he spoke to them. Therefore now return and go to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan.

⁵ Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

⁶ So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went to their tents.

⁷ Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given inheritance in Bashan; but Joshua gave to the other half among their brothers beyond the Jordan westward. Moreover when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them,

⁸ and spoke to them, saying, “Return with much wealth to your tents, with very much livestock, with silver, with gold, with bronze, with iron, and with very much clothing. Divide the plunder of your enemies with your brothers.”

⁹ The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, which they owned, according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Reuben^H7205 and the children^H1121 of Gad^H1410 and the half^H2677 tribe^H7626 of Manasseh^H4519 returned^H7725^(H8799), and departed^H3212^(H8799) from the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 out of Shiloh^H7887, which is in the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667, to go^H3212^(H8800) unto the country^H776 of Gilead^H1568, to the land^H776 of their possession^H272, whereof they were possessed^H270^(H8738), according to the word^H6310 of the LORD^H3068 by the hand^H3027 of Moses^H4872.

¹⁰ When they came to the region near the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, a great altar to look at.

KJVAnd when they came^H935^(H8799) unto the borders^H1552 of Jordan^H3383, that are in the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667, the children^H1121 of Reuben^H7205 and the children^H1121 of Gad^H1410 and the half^H2677 tribe^H7626 of Manasseh^H4519 built^H1129^(H8799) there an altar^H4196 by Jordan^H3383, a great^H1419 altar^H4196 to see to^H4758.

¹¹ The children of Israel heard this, “Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar along the border of the land of Canaan, in the region around the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the children of Israel.”

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 heard^H8085^(H8799) say^H559^(H8800), Behold, the children^H1121 of Reuben^H7205 and the children^H1121 of Gad^H1410 and the half^H2677 tribe^H7626 of Manasseh^H4519 have built^H1129^(H8804) an altar^H4196 over against^H4136 the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667, in the borders^H1552 of Jordan^H3383, at the passage^H5676 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478.

¹² When the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.

KJVAnd when the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 heard^H8085^(H8799) of it, the whole congregation^H5712 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 gathered themselves together^H6950^(H8735) at Shiloh^H7887, to go up^H5927^(H8800) to war^H6635 against them.

¹³ The children of Israel sent to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest.

¹⁴ With him were ten princes, one prince of a fathers’ house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were each head of their fathers’ houses among the thousands of Israel.

¹⁵ They came to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying,

¹⁶ “The whole congregation of Yahweh says, ‘What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away today from following Yahweh, in that you have built yourselves an altar, to rebel today against Yahweh?

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the whole congregation^H5712 of the LORD^H3068, What trespass^H4604 is this that ye have committed^H4603^(H8804) against the God^H430 of Israel^H3478, to turn away^H7725^(H8800) this day^H3117 from following^H310 the LORD^H3068, in that ye have builded^H1129^(H8800) you an altar^H4196, that ye might rebel^H4775^(H8800) this day^H3117 against the LORD^H3068?

¹⁷ Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there came a plague on the congregation of Yahweh,

KJVIs the iniquity^H5771 of Peor^H6465 too little^H4592 for us, from which we are not cleansed^H2891^(H8694) until this day^H3117, although there was a plague^H5063 in the congregation^H5712 of the LORD^H3068,

¹⁸ that you must turn away today from following Yahweh? It will be, since you rebel today against Yahweh, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.

KJVBut that ye must turn away^H7725^(H8799) this day^H3117 from following^H310 the LORD^H3068? and it will be, seeing ye rebel^H4775^(H8799) to day^H3117 against the LORD^H3068, that to morrow^H4279 he will be wroth^H7107^(H8799) with the whole congregation^H5712 of Israel^H3478.

¹⁹ However, if the land of your possession is unclean, then pass over to the land of the possession of Yahweh, in which Yahweh’s tabernacle dwells, and take possession among us; but don’t rebel against Yahweh, nor rebel against us, in building an altar other than Yahweh our God’s altar.

KJVNotwithstanding^H389, if the land^H776 of your possession^H272 be unclean^H2931, then pass ye over^H5674^(H8798) unto the land^H776 of the possession^H272 of the LORD^H3068, wherein the LORD'S^H3068 tabernacle^H4908 dwelleth^H7931^(H8804), and take possession^H270^(H8734) among^H8432 us: but rebel^H4775^(H8799) not against the LORD^H3068, nor^H408 rebel^H4775^(H8799) against us, in building^H1129^(H8800) you an altar^H4196 beside^H1107 the altar^H4196 of the LORD^H3068 our God^H430.

²⁰ Didn’t Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? That man didn’t perish alone in his iniquity.’”

²¹ Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel,

²² “The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, the Mighty One, God, Yahweh, he knows; and Israel shall know: if it was in rebellion, or if in trespass against Yahweh (don’t save us today),

KJVThe LORD^H3068 God^H410 of gods^H430, the LORD^H3068 God^H410 of gods^H430, he knoweth^H3045^(H8802), and Israel^H3478 he shall know^H3045^(H8799); if it be in rebellion^H4777, or if in transgression^H4604 against the LORD^H3068,(save^H3467^(H8686) us not this day^H3117,)

²³ that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Yahweh; or if to offer burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings, let Yahweh himself require it.

KJVThat we have built^H1129^(H8800) us an altar^H4196 to turn^H7725^(H8800) from following^H310 the LORD^H3068, or if to offer^H5927^(H8687) thereon burnt offering^H5930 or meat offering^H4503, or if to offer^H6213^(H8800) peace^H8002 offerings^H2077 thereon, let the LORD^H3068 himself require^H1245^(H8762) it;

²⁴ “If we have not out of concern done this, and for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your children might speak to our children, saying, “What have you to do with Yahweh, the God of Israel?

KJVAnd if we have not rather done^H6213^(H8804) it for fear^H1674 of this thing^H1697, saying^H559^(H8800), In time to come^H4279 your children^H1121 might speak^H559^(H8799) unto our children^H1121, saying^H559^(H8800), What have ye to do with the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478?

²⁵ For Yahweh has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you children of Reuben and children of Gad. You have no portion in Yahweh.”’ So your children might make our children cease from fearing Yahweh.

KJVFor the LORD^H3068 hath made^H5414^(H8804) Jordan^H3383 a border^H1366 between us and you, ye children^H1121 of Reuben^H7205 and children^H1121 of Gad^H1410; ye have no part^H2506 in the LORD^H3068: so shall your children^H1121 make^H7673 our children^H1121 cease^H7673^(H8689) from^H1115 fearing^H3372^(H8800) the LORD^H3068.

²⁶ “Therefore we said, ‘Let’s now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice;

KJVTherefore we said^H559^(H8799), Let us now prepare^H6213^(H8799) to build^H1129^(H8800) us an altar^H4196, not for burnt offering^H5930, nor for sacrifice^H2077:

²⁷ but it will be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may perform the service of Yahweh before him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings;’ that your children may not tell our children in time to come, ‘You have no portion in Yahweh.’

²⁸ “Therefore we said, ‘It shall be, when they tell us or our generations this in time to come, that we shall say, “Behold the pattern of Yahweh’s altar, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.”’

KJVTherefore said^H559^(H8799) we, that it shall be, when they should so say^H559^(H8799) to us or to our generations^H1755 in time to come^H4279, that we may say^H559^(H8804) again, Behold^H7200^(H8798) the pattern^H8403 of the altar^H4196 of the LORD^H3068, which our fathers^H1 made^H6213^(H8804), not for burnt offerings^H5930, nor for sacrifices^H2077; but it is a witness^H5707 between us and you.

²⁹ “Far be it from us that we should rebel against Yahweh, and turn away today from following Yahweh, to build an altar for burnt offering, for meal offering, or for sacrifice, besides Yahweh our God’s altar that is before his tabernacle!”

KJVGod forbid^H2486 that we should rebel^H4775^(H8800) against the LORD^H3068, and turn^H7725^(H8800) this day^H3117 from following^H310 the LORD^H3068, to build^H1129^(H8800) an altar^H4196 for burnt offerings^H5930, for meat offerings^H4503, or for sacrifices^H2077, beside the altar^H4196 of the LORD^H3068 our God^H430 that is before^H6440 his tabernacle^H4908.

³⁰ When Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them well.

KJVAnd when Phinehas^H6372 the priest^H3548, and the princes^H5387 of the congregation^H5712 and heads^H7218 of the thousands^H505 of Israel^H3478 which were with him, heard^H8085^(H8799) the words^H1697 that the children^H1121 of Reuben^H7205 and the children^H1121 of Gad^H1410 and the children^H1121 of Manasseh^H4519 spake^H1696^(H8765), it pleased^H3190^(H8799)^H5869 them.

³¹ Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, “Today we know that Yahweh is among us, because you have not committed this trespass against Yahweh. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of Yahweh’s hand.”

KJVAnd Phinehas^H6372 the son^H1121 of Eleazar^H499 the priest^H3548 said^H559^(H8799) unto the children^H1121 of Reuben^H7205, and to the children^H1121 of Gad^H1410, and to the children^H1121 of Manasseh^H4519, This day^H3117 we perceive^H3045^(H8804) that the LORD^H3068 is among^H8432 us, because ye have not committed^H4603^(H8804) this trespass^H4604 against the LORD^H3068: now^H227 ye have delivered^H5337^(H8689) the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 out of the hand^H3027 of the LORD^H3068.

³² Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
