¹When all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, their heart melted, and there was no more spirit in them, because of the children of Israel.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when all the kings^H4428 of the Amorites^H567, which were on the side^H5676 of Jordan^H3383 westward^H3220, and all the kings^H4428 of the Canaanites^H3669, which were by the sea^H3220, heard^H8085^(H8800) that the LORD^H3068 had dried up^H3001^(H8689) the waters^H4325 of Jordan^H3383 from before^H6440 the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, until we were passed over^H5674^(H8800), that their heart^H3824 melted^H4549^(H8735), neither was there spirit^H7307 in them any more, because^H6440 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478.

² At that time, Yahweh said to Joshua, “Make flint knives, and circumcise again the sons of Israel the second time.”

KJVAt that time^H6256 the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8804) unto Joshua^H3091, Make^H6213^(H8798) thee sharp^H6697 knives^H2719, and circumcise^H4135^(H8798) again^H7725^(H8798) the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 the second time^H8145.

³ Joshua made himself flint knives, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 made^H6213^(H8799) him sharp^H6697 knives^H2719, and circumcised^H4135^(H8799) the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 at the hill^H1389 of the foreskins^H6190.

⁴ This is the reason Joshua circumcised them: all the people who came out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness along the way, after they came out of Egypt.

KJVAnd this is the cause^H1697 why Joshua^H3091 did circumcise^H4135^(H8804): All the people^H5971 that came out^H3318^(H8802) of Egypt^H4714, that were males^H2145, even all the men^H582 of war^H4421, died^H4191^(H8804) in the wilderness^H4057 by the way^H1870, after they came out^H3318^(H8800) of Egypt^H4714.

⁵ For all the people who came out were circumcised; but all the people who were born in the wilderness along the way as they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised.

KJVNow^H3588 all the people^H5971 that came out^H3318^(H8802) were circumcised^H4135^(H8803): but all the people^H5971 that were born^H3209 in the wilderness^H4057 by the way^H1870 as they came forth^H3318^(H8800) out of Egypt^H4714, them they had not circumcised^H4135^(H8804).

⁶ For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

⁷ Their children, whom he raised up in their place, were circumcised by Joshua, for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them on the way.

⁸ When they were done circumcising the whole nation, they stayed in their places in the camp until they were healed.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when they had done^H8552^(H8804) circumcising^H4135^(H8736) all the people^H1471, that they abode^H3427^(H8799) in their places in the camp^H4264, till they were whole^H2421^(H8800).

⁹ Yahweh said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal to this day.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto Joshua^H3091, This day^H3117 have I rolled away^H1556^(H8804) the reproach^H2781 of Egypt^H4714 from off you. Wherefore the name^H8034 of the place^H4725 is called^H7121^(H8799) Gilgal^H1537 unto this day^H3117.

¹⁰ The children of Israel encamped in Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 encamped^H2583^(H8799) in Gilgal^H1537, and kept^H6213^(H8799) the passover^H6453 on the fourteenth^H702^H6240 day^H3117 of the month^H2320 at even^H6153 in the plains^H6160 of Jericho^H3405.

¹¹ They ate unleavened cakes and parched grain of the produce of the land on the next day after the Passover, in the same day.

KJVAnd they did eat^H398^(H8799) of the old corn^H5669 of the land^H776 on the morrow^H4283 after the passover^H6453, unleavened cakes^H4682, and parched^H7033^(H8803) corn in the selfsame^H6106 day^H3117.

¹² The manna ceased on the next day, after they had eaten of the produce of the land. The children of Israel didn’t have manna any more, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

KJVAnd the manna^H4478 ceased^H7673^(H8799) on the morrow^H4283 after they had eaten^H398^(H8800) of the old corn^H5669 of the land^H776; neither had the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 manna^H4478 any more; but they did eat^H398^(H8799) of the fruit^H8393 of the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667 that year^H8141.

¹³ When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our enemies?”

KJVAnd it came to pass, when Joshua^H3091 was by Jericho^H3405, that he lifted up^H5375^(H8799) his eyes^H5869 and looked^H7200^(H8799), and, behold, there stood^H5975^(H8802) a man^H376 over against him with his sword^H2719 drawn^H8025^(H8803) in his hand^H3027: and Joshua^H3091 went^H3212^(H8799) unto him, and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries^H6862?

¹⁴ He said, “No; but I have come now as commander of Yahweh’s army.” Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshiped, and asked him, “What does my lord say to his servant?”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Nay; but as captain^H8269 of the host^H6635 of the LORD^H3068 am I now come^H935^(H8804). And Joshua^H3091 fell^H5307^(H8799) on his face^H6440 to the earth^H776, and did worship^H7812^(H8691), and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, What saith^H1696^(H8764) my lord^H113 unto his servant^H5650?

¹⁵ The prince of Yahweh’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals, for the place on which you stand is holy.” Joshua did so.

KJVAnd the captain^H8269 of the LORD'S^H3068 host^H6635 said^H559^(H8799) unto Joshua^H3091, Loose^H5394^(H8798) thy shoe^H5275 from off thy foot^H7272; for the place^H4725 whereon thou standest^H5975^(H8802) is holy^H6944. And Joshua^H3091 did^H6213^(H8799) so.

¹When all the nation had completely crossed over the Jordan, Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying,

KJVAnd it came to pass, when all the people^H1471 were clean^H8552^(H8804) passed over^H5674^(H8800) Jordan^H3383, that the LORD^H3068 spake^H559^(H8799) unto Joshua^H3091, saying^H559^(H8800),

² “Take twelve men out of the people, a man out of every tribe,

KJVTake^H3947^(H8798) you twelve^H8147^H6240 men^H582 out of the people^H5971, out of every^H259 tribe^H7626 a man^H376,

³ and command them, saying, ‘Take from out of the middle of the Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, carry them over with you, and lay them down in the place where you’ll camp tonight.’”

KJVAnd command^H6680^(H8761) ye them, saying^H559^(H8800), Take^H5375^(H8798) you hence out of the midst^H8432 of Jordan^H3383, out of the place where the priests^H3548' feet^H7272 stood^H4673 firm^H3559^(H8687), twelve^H8147^H6240 stones^H68, and ye shall carry them over^H5674^(H8689) with you, and leave^H3240^(H8689) them in the lodging place^H4411, where ye shall lodge^H3885^(H8799) this night^H3915.

⁴ Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, a man out of every tribe.

⁵ Joshua said to them, “Cross before the ark of Yahweh your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you pick up a stone and put it on your shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel;

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Pass over^H5674^(H8798) before^H6440 the ark^H727 of the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 into the midst^H8432 of Jordan^H3383, and take ye up^H7311^(H8685) every^H259 man^H376 of you a stone^H68 upon his shoulder^H7926, according unto the number^H4557 of the tribes^H7626 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478:

⁶ that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask in the future, saying, ‘What do you mean by these stones?’

KJVThat this may be a sign^H226 among^H7130 you, that when your children^H1121 ask^H7592^(H8799) their fathers in time to come^H4279, saying^H559^(H8800), What mean ye by these stones^H68?

⁷ then you shall tell them, ‘Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of Yahweh’s covenant. When it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.’”

KJVThen ye shall answer^H559^(H8804) them, That the waters^H4325 of Jordan^H3383 were cut off^H3772^(H8738) before^H6440 the ark^H727 of the covenant^H1285 of the LORD^H3068; when it passed over^H5674^(H8800) Jordan^H3383, the waters^H4325 of Jordan^H3383 were cut off^H3772^(H8738): and these stones^H68 shall be for a memorial^H2146 unto the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 for^H5704 ever^H5769.

⁸ The children of Israel did as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan, as Yahweh spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel. They carried them over with them to the place where they camped, and laid them down there.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 did^H6213^(H8799) so as Joshua^H3091 commanded^H6680^(H8765), and took up^H5375^(H8799) twelve^H8147^H6240 stones^H68 out of the midst^H8432 of Jordan^H3383, as the LORD^H3068 spake^H1696^(H8765) unto Joshua^H3091, according to the number^H4557 of the tribes^H7626 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, and carried them over^H5674^(H8686) with them unto the place where they lodged^H4411, and laid them down^H3240^(H8686) there.

⁹ Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day.

¹⁰ For the priests who bore the ark stood in the middle of the Jordan until everything was finished that Yahweh commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and passed over.

KJVFor the priests^H3548 which bare^H5375^(H8802) the ark^H727 stood^H5975^(H8802) in the midst^H8432 of Jordan^H3383, until every thing^H1697 was finished^H8552^(H8800) that the LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765) Joshua^H3091 to speak^H1696^(H8763) unto the people^H5971, according to all that Moses^H4872 commanded^H6680^(H8765) Joshua^H3091: and the people^H5971 hasted^H4116^(H8762) and passed over^H5674^(H8799).

¹¹ When all the people had completely crossed over, Yahweh’s ark crossed over with the priests in the presence of the people.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when all the people^H5971 were clean^H8552^(H8804) passed over^H5674^(H8800), that the ark^H727 of the LORD^H3068 passed over^H5674^(H8799), and the priests^H3548, in the presence^H6440 of the people^H5971.

¹² The children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spoke to them.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Reuben^H7205, and the children^H1121 of Gad^H1410, and half^H2677 the tribe^H7626 of Manasseh^H4519, passed over^H5674^(H8799) armed^H2571 before^H6440 the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, as Moses^H4872 spake^H1696^(H8765) unto them:

¹³ About forty thousand men, ready and armed for war, passed over before Yahweh to battle, to the plains of Jericho.

KJVAbout forty^H705 thousand^H505 prepared^H2502^(H8803) for war^H6635 passed over^H5674^(H8804) before^H6440 the LORD^H3068 unto battle^H4421, to the plains^H6160 of Jericho^H3405.

¹⁴ On that day, Yahweh magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

¹⁵ Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 spake^H559^(H8799) unto Joshua^H3091, saying^H559^(H8800),

¹⁶ “Command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, that they come up out of the Jordan.”

KJVCommand^H6680^(H8761) the priests^H3548 that bear^H5375^(H8802) the ark^H727 of the testimony^H5715, that they come up^H5927^(H8799) out of Jordan^H3383.

¹⁷ Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, “Come up out of the Jordan!”

KJVJoshua^H3091 therefore commanded^H6680^(H8762) the priests^H3548, saying^H559^(H8800), Come ye up^H5927^(H8798) out of Jordan^H3383.

¹⁸ When the priests who bore the ark of Yahweh’s covenant had come up out of the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet had been lifted up to the dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and went over all its banks, as before.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when the priests^H3548 that bare^H5375^(H8802) the ark^H727 of the covenant^H1285 of the LORD^H3068 were come up^H5927^(H8800) out of the midst^H8432 of Jordan^H3383, and the soles^H3709 of the priests^H3548' feet^H7272 were lifted up^H5423^(H8738) unto the dry land^H2724, that the waters^H4325 of Jordan^H3383 returned^H7725^(H8799) unto their place^H4725, and flowed^H3212^(H8799) over all his banks^H1415, as^H8543 they did before^H8032.

¹⁹ The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.

KJVAnd the people^H5971 came up^H5927^(H8804) out of Jordan^H3383 on the tenth^H6218 day of the first^H7223 month^H2320, and encamped^H2583^(H8799) in Gilgal^H1537, in the east^H4217 border^H7097 of Jericho^H3405.

²⁰ Joshua set up those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, in Gilgal.

KJVAnd those twelve^H8147^H6240 stones^H68, which they took out^H3947^(H8804) of Jordan^H3383, did Joshua^H3091 pitch^H6965^(H8689) in Gilgal^H1537.

²¹ He spoke to the children of Israel, saying, “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean?’

KJVAnd he spake^H559^(H8799) unto the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, saying^H559^(H8800), When your children^H1121 shall ask^H7592^(H8799) their fathers^H1 in time to come^H4279, saying^H559^(H8800), What mean these stones^H68?

²² Then you shall let your children know, saying, ‘Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.

KJVThen ye shall let your children^H1121 know^H3045^(H8689), saying^H559^(H8800), Israel^H3478 came over^H5674^(H8804) this Jordan^H3383 on dry land^H3004.

²³ For Yahweh your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you until you had crossed over, as Yahweh your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we had crossed over,

²⁴ that all the peoples of the earth may know that Yahweh’s hand is mighty, and that you may fear Yahweh your God forever.’”
