¹When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it

KJVAnd it came to pass, when all the kings^H4428 which were on this side^H5676 Jordan^H3383, in the hills^H2022, and in the valleys^H8219, and in all the coasts^H2348 of the great^H1419 sea^H3220 over against^H4136 Lebanon^H3844, the Hittite^H2850, and the Amorite^H567, the Canaanite^H3669, the Perizzite^H6522, the Hivite^H2340, and the Jebusite^H2983, heard^H8085^(H8800) thereof;

² they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

³ But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

⁴ they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and old, torn-up and bound up wineskins,

⁵ and old and patched sandals on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.

⁶ They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”

⁷ The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “What if you live among us? How could we make a covenant with you?”

⁸ They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?”

⁹ They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,

¹⁰ and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

¹¹ Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take supplies in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them. Tell them, “We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.”’

¹² This our bread we took hot for our supplies out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become moldy.

¹⁴ The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.

KJVAnd the men^H582 took^H3947^(H8799) of their victuals^H6718, and asked^H7592^(H8804) not counsel at the mouth^H6310 of the LORD^H3068.

¹⁵ Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 made^H6213^(H8799) peace^H7965 with them, and made^H3772^(H8799) a league^H1285 with them, to let them live^H2421^(H8763): and the princes^H5387 of the congregation^H5712 sware^H7650^(H8735) unto them.

¹⁶ At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.

KJVAnd it came to pass at the end^H7097 of three^H7969 days^H3117 after^H310 they had made^H3772^(H8804) a league^H1285 with them, that they heard^H8085^(H8799) that they were their neighbours^H7138, and that they dwelt^H3427^(H8802) among^H7130 them.

¹⁷ The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 journeyed^H5265^(H8799), and came^H935^(H8799) unto their cities^H5892 on the third^H7992 day^H3117. Now their cities^H5892 were Gibeon^H1391, and Chephirah^H3716, and Beeroth^H881, and Kirjathjearim^H7157.

¹⁸ The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 smote^H5221^(H8689) them not, because the princes^H5387 of the congregation^H5712 had sworn^H7650^(H8738) unto them by the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478. And all the congregation^H5712 murmured^H3885^(H8735) against the princes^H5387.

¹⁹ But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. Now therefore we may not touch them.

KJVBut all the princes^H5387 said^H559^(H8799) unto all the congregation^H5712, We have sworn^H7650^(H8738) unto them by the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478: now therefore we may^H3201^(H8799) not touch^H5060^(H8800) them.

²⁰ We will do this to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”

²¹ The princes said to them, “Let them live.” So they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them.

²² Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?

²³ Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be slaves, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God.”

KJVNow therefore ye are cursed^H779^(H8803), and there shall none of you be freed^H3772^(H8735) from being bondmen^H5650, and hewers^H2404^(H8802) of wood^H6086 and drawers^H7579^(H8802) of water^H4325 for the house^H1004 of my God^H430.

²⁴ They answered Joshua, and said, “Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

KJVAnd they answered^H6030^(H8799) Joshua^H3091, and said^H559^(H8799), Because it was certainly^H5046^(H8715) told^H5046^(H8717) thy servants^H5650, how that the LORD^H3068 thy God^H430 commanded^H6680^(H8765) his servant^H5650 Moses^H4872 to give^H5414^(H8800) you all the land^H776, and to destroy^H8045^(H8687) all the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of the land^H776 from before^H6440 you, therefore we were sore^H3966 afraid^H3372^(H8799) of our lives^H5315 because^H6440 of you, and have done^H6213^(H8799) this thing^H1697.

²⁵ Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”

KJVAnd now, behold, we^H2009 are in thine hand^H3027: as it seemeth^H5869 good^H2896 and right^H3477 unto thee to do^H6213^(H8800) unto us, do^H6213^(H8798).

²⁶ He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.

KJVAnd so did^H6213^(H8799) he unto them, and delivered^H5337^(H8686) them out of the hand^H3027 of the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, that they slew^H2026^(H8804) them not.

²⁷ That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for Yahweh’s altar to this day, in the place which he should choose.

¹Yahweh said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed. Take all the warriors with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto Joshua^H3091, Fear^H3372^(H8799) not, neither be thou dismayed^H2865^(H8735): take^H3947^(H8798) all the people^H5971 of war^H4421 with thee, and arise^H6965^(H8798), go up^H5927^(H8798) to Ai^H5857: see^H7200^(H8798), I have given^H5414^(H8804) into thy hand^H3027 the king^H4428 of Ai^H5857, and his people^H5971, and his city^H5892, and his land^H776:

² You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except you shall take its goods and its livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”

KJVAnd thou shalt do^H6213^(H8804) to Ai^H5857 and her king^H4428 as thou didst^H6213^(H8804) unto Jericho^H3405 and her king^H4428: only the spoil^H7998 thereof, and the cattle^H929 thereof, shall ye take for a prey^H962^(H8799) unto yourselves: lay^H7760^(H8798) thee an ambush^H693^(H8802) for the city^H5892 behind^H310 it.

³ So Joshua arose, with all the warriors, to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them out by night.

⁴ He commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.

⁵ I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.

KJVAnd I, and all the people^H5971 that are with me, will approach^H7126^(H8799) unto the city^H5892: and it shall come to pass, when they come out^H3318^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) us, as at the first^H7223, that we will flee^H5127^(H8804) before^H6440 them,

⁶ They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, like the first time.’ So we will flee before them,

⁷ and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for Yahweh your God will deliver it into your hand.

KJVThen ye shall rise up^H6965^(H8799) from the ambush^H693^(H8802), and seize^H3423^(H8689) upon the city^H5892: for the LORD^H3068 your God^H430 will deliver^H5414^(H8804) it into your hand^H3027.

⁸ It shall be, when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do this according to Yahweh’s word. Behold, I have commanded you.”

⁹ Joshua sent them out; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai on the west side of Ai; but Joshua stayed among the people that night.

¹⁰ Joshua rose up early in the morning, mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 rose up early^H7925^(H8686) in the morning^H1242, and numbered^H6485^(H8799) the people^H5971, and went up^H5927^(H8799), he and the elders^H2205 of Israel^H3478, before^H6440 the people^H5971 to Ai^H5857.

¹¹ All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up and came near, and came before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.

KJVAnd all the people^H5971, even the people of war^H4421 that were with him, went up^H5927^(H8804), and drew nigh^H5066^(H8799), and came^H935^(H8799) before the city^H5892, and pitched^H2583^(H8799) on the north side^H6828 of Ai^H5857: now there was a valley^H1516 between them and Ai^H5857.

¹² He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

KJVAnd he took^H3947^(H8799) about five^H2568 thousand^H505 men^H376, and set^H7760^(H8799) them to lie in ambush^H693^(H8802) between Bethel^H1008 and Ai^H5857, on the west side^H3220 of the city^H5857^(H8675)^H5892.

¹³ So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the middle of the valley.

KJVAnd when they had set^H7760^(H8799) the people^H5971, even all the host^H4264 that was on the north^H6828 of the city^H5892, and their liers in wait^H6119 on the west^H3220 of the city^H5892, Joshua^H3091 went^H3212^(H8799) that night^H3915 into the midst^H8432 of the valley^H6010.

¹⁴ When the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when the king^H4428 of Ai^H5857 saw^H7200^(H8800) it, that they hasted^H4116^(H8762) and rose up early^H7925^(H8686), and the men^H582 of the city^H5892 went out^H3318^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) Israel^H3478 to battle^H4421, he and all his people^H5971, at a time appointed^H4150, before^H6440 the plain^H6160; but he wist^H3045^(H8804) not that there were liers in ambush^H693^(H8802) against him behind^H310 the city^H5892.

¹⁵ Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 and all Israel^H3478 made as if they were beaten^H5060^(H8735) before^H6440 them, and fled^H5127^(H8799) by the way^H1870 of the wilderness^H4057.

¹⁶ All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

KJVAnd all the people^H5971 that were in Ai^H5857^(H8675)^H5892 were called^H2199^(H8735) together to pursue^H7291^(H8800) after^H310 them: and they pursued^H7291^(H8799) after^H310 Joshua^H3091, and were drawn away^H5423^(H8735) from the city^H5892.

¹⁷ There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who didn’t go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.

KJVAnd there was not a man^H376 left^H7604^(H8738) in Ai^H5857 or Bethel^H1008, that went not out^H3318^(H8804) after^H310 Israel^H3478: and they left^H5800^(H8799) the city^H5892 open^H6605^(H8803), and pursued^H7291^(H8799) after Israel^H3478.

¹⁸ Yahweh said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto Joshua^H3091, Stretch out^H5186^(H8798) the spear^H3591 that is in thy hand^H3027 toward Ai^H5857; for I will give^H5414^(H8799) it into thine hand^H3027. And Joshua^H3091 stretched out^H5186^(H8799) the spear^H3591 that he had in his hand^H3027 toward the city^H5892.

¹⁹ The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand and entered into the city and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.

KJVAnd the ambush^H693^(H8802) arose^H6965^(H8804) quickly^H4120 out of their place^H4725, and they ran^H7323^(H8799) as soon as he had stretched out^H5186^(H8800) his hand^H3027: and they entered^H935^(H8799) into the city^H5892, and took^H3920^(H8799) it, and hasted^H4116^(H8762) and set^H3341^(H8686) the city^H5892 on fire^H784.

²⁰ When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

KJVAnd when the men^H582 of Ai^H5857 looked^H6437^(H8799) behind^H310 them, they saw^H7200^(H8799), and, behold, the smoke^H6227 of the city^H5892 ascended up^H5927^(H8804) to heaven^H8064, and they had no power^H3027 to flee^H5127^(H8800) this way or that way^H2008: and the people^H5971 that fled^H5127^(H8801) to the wilderness^H4057 turned back^H2015^(H8738) upon the pursuers^H7291^(H8802).

²¹ When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned back and killed the men of Ai.

KJVAnd when Joshua^H3091 and all Israel^H3478 saw^H7200^(H8804) that the ambush^H693^(H8802) had taken^H3920^(H8804) the city^H5892, and that the smoke^H6227 of the city^H5892 ascended^H5927^(H8804), then they turned again^H7725^(H8799), and slew^H5221^(H8686) the men^H582 of Ai^H5857.

²² The others came out of the city against them, so they were in the middle of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. They struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

KJVAnd the other^H428 issued out^H3318^(H8804) of the city^H5892 against^H7125^(H8800) them; so they were in the midst^H8432 of Israel^H3478, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote^H5221^(H8686) them, so that^H5704 they let^H7604^(H8689) none of them remain^H8300 or escape^H6412.

²³ They captured the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.

KJVAnd the king^H4428 of Ai^H5857 they took^H8610^(H8804) alive^H2416, and brought^H7126^(H8686) him to Joshua^H3091.

²⁴ When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when Israel^H3478 had made an end^H3615^(H8763) of slaying^H2026^(H8800) all the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Ai^H5857 in the field^H7704, in the wilderness^H4057 wherein they chased^H7291^(H8804) them, and when they were all fallen^H5307^(H8799) on the edge^H6310 of the sword^H2719, until they were consumed^H8552^(H8800), that all the Israelites^H3478 returned^H7725^(H8799) unto Ai^H5857, and smote^H5221^(H8686) it with the edge^H6310 of the sword^H2719.

²⁵ All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the people of Ai.

KJVAnd so it was, that all that fell^H5307^(H8802) that day^H3117, both of men^H376 and women^H802, were twelve^H8147^H6240 thousand^H505, even all the men^H582 of Ai^H5857.

²⁶ For Joshua didn’t draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

KJVFor Joshua^H3091 drew^H7725 not his hand^H3027 back^H7725^(H8689), wherewith he stretched out^H5186^(H8804) the spear^H3591, until he had utterly destroyed^H2763^(H8689) all the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Ai^H5857.

²⁷ Israel took for themselves only the livestock and the goods of that city, according to Yahweh’s word which he commanded Joshua.

KJVOnly the cattle^H929 and the spoil^H7998 of that city^H5892 Israel^H3478 took for a prey^H962^(H8804) unto themselves, according unto the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 which he commanded^H6680^(H8765) Joshua^H3091.

²⁸ So Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, to this day.

KJVAnd Joshua^H3091 burnt^H8313^(H8799) Ai^H5857, and made^H7760^(H8799) it an heap^H8510 for ever^H5769, even a desolation^H8077 unto this day^H3117.

²⁹ He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening. At sundown, Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day.
