¹In those days there was no king in Israel. In those days the tribe of the Danites sought an inheritance to dwell in; for to that day, their inheritance had not fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.

² The children of Dan sent five men of their family from their whole number, men of valor, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to search it. They said to them, “Go, explore the land!” They came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.

³ When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite; so they went over there and said to him, “Who brought you here? What do you do in this place? What do you have here?”

⁴ He said to them, “Thus and thus has Micah dealt with me, and he has hired me, and I have become his priest.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Thus^H2090 and thus^H2090 dealeth^H6213^(H8804) Micah^H4318 with me, and hath hired^H7936^(H8799) me, and I am his priest^H3548.

⁵ They said to him, “Please ask counsel of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.”

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Ask counsel^H7592^(H8798), we pray thee, of God^H430, that we may know^H3045^(H8799) whether our way^H1870 which we go^H1980^(H8802) shall be prosperous^H6743^(H8686).

⁶ The priest said to them, “Go in peace. Your way in which you go is before Yahweh.”

KJVAnd the priest^H3548 said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Go^H3212^(H8798) in peace^H7965: before^H5227 the LORD^H3068 is your way^H1870 wherein ye go^H3212^(H8799).

⁷ Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were there, how they lived in safety, in the way of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was no one in the land possessing authority, that might put them to shame in anything, and they were far from the Sidonians, and had no dealings with anyone else.

⁸ They came to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol; and their brothers asked them, “What do you say?”

⁹ They said, “Arise, and let’s go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. Do you stand still? Don’t be slothful to go and to enter in to possess the land.

¹⁰ When you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people, and the land is large; for God has given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything that is on the earth.”

KJVWhen ye go^H935^(H8800), ye shall come^H935^(H8799) unto a people^H5971 secure^H982^(H8802), and to a large^H7342 land^H776: for God^H430 hath given^H5414^(H8804) it into your hands^H3027; a place^H4725 where there is no want^H4270 of any thing^H1697 that is in the earth^H776.

¹¹ The family of the Danites set out from Zorah and Eshtaol with six hundred men armed with weapons of war.

KJVAnd there went^H5265^(H8799) from thence of the family^H4940 of the Danites^H1839, out of Zorah^H6881 and out of Eshtaol^H847, six^H8337 hundred^H3967 men^H376 appointed^H2296^(H8803) with weapons^H3627 of war^H4421.

¹² They went up and encamped in Kiriath Jearim in Judah. Therefore they call that place Mahaneh Dan to this day. Behold, it is behind Kiriath Jearim.

KJVAnd they went up^H5927^(H8799), and pitched^H2583^(H8799) in Kirjathjearim^H7157, in Judah^H3063: wherefore they called^H7121^(H8804) that place^H4725 Mahanehdan^H4265 unto this day^H3117: behold, it is behind^H310 Kirjathjearim^H7157.

¹³ They passed from there to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.

KJVAnd they passed^H5674^(H8799) thence unto mount^H2022 Ephraim^H669, and came^H935^(H8799) unto the house^H1004 of Micah^H4318.

¹⁴ Then the five men who went to spy out the country of Laish answered and said to their brothers, “Do you know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a carved image, and a molten image? Now therefore consider what you have to do.”

¹⁵ They went over there and came to the house of the young Levite man, even to the house of Micah, and asked him how he was doing.

KJVAnd they turned^H5493^(H8799) thitherward, and came^H935^(H8799) to the house^H1004 of the young man^H5288 the Levite^H3881, even unto the house^H1004 of Micah^H4318, and saluted^H7592^(H8799)^H7965 him.

¹⁶ The six hundred men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.

KJVAnd the six^H8337 hundred^H3967 men^H376 appointed^H2296^(H8803) with their weapons^H3627 of war^H4421, which were of the children^H1121 of Dan^H1835, stood^H5324^(H8737) by the entering^H6607 of the gate^H8179.

¹⁷ The five men who went to spy out the land went up, and came in there, and took the engraved image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.

KJVAnd the five^H2568 men^H582 that went^H1980^(H8802) to spy out^H7270^(H8763) the land^H776 went up^H5927^(H8799), and came in^H935^(H8804) thither, and took^H3947^(H8804) the graven image^H6459, and the ephod^H646, and the teraphim^H8655, and the molten image^H4541: and the priest^H3548 stood^H5324^(H8737) in the entering^H6607 of the gate^H8179 with the six^H8337 hundred^H3967 men^H376 that were appointed^H2296^(H8803) with weapons^H3627 of war^H4421.

¹⁸ When these went into Micah’s house, and took the engraved image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”

KJVAnd these went^H935^(H8804) into Micah's^H4318 house^H1004, and fetched^H3947^(H8799) the carved image^H6459, the ephod^H646, and the teraphim^H8655, and the molten image^H4541. Then said^H559^(H8799) the priest^H3548 unto them, What do^H6213^(H8802) ye?

¹⁹ They said to him, “Hold your peace, put your hand on your mouth, and go with us. Be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?”

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Hold thy peace^H2790^(H8685), lay^H7760^(H8798) thine hand^H3027 upon thy mouth^H6310, and go^H3212^(H8798) with us, and be to us^H1961^(H8800) a father^H1 and a priest^H3548: is it better^H2896 for thee to be a priest^H3548 unto the house^H1004 of one^H259 man^H376, or that thou be a priest^H3548 unto a tribe^H7626 and a family^H4940 in Israel^H3478?

²⁰ The priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, the teraphim, and the engraved image, and went with the people.

KJVAnd the priest's^H3548 heart^H3820 was glad^H3190^(H8799), and he took^H3947^(H8799) the ephod^H646, and the teraphim^H8655, and the graven image^H6459, and went in^H935^(H8799) the midst^H7130 of the people^H5971.

²¹ So they turned and departed, and put the little ones, the livestock, and the goods before them.

KJVSo they turned^H6437^(H8799) and departed^H3212^(H8799), and put^H7760^(H8799) the little ones^H2945 and the cattle^H4735 and the carriage^H3520 before^H6440 them.

²² When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house gathered together and overtook the children of Dan.

KJVAnd when they were a good way^H7368^(H8689) from the house^H1004 of Micah^H4318, the men^H582 that were in the houses^H1004 near to Micah's^H4318 house^H1004 were gathered together^H2199^(H8738), and overtook^H1692^(H8686) the children^H1121 of Dan^H1835.

²³ As they called to the children of Dan, they turned their faces, and said to Micah, “What ails you, that you come with such a company?”

KJVAnd they cried^H7121^(H8799) unto the children^H1121 of Dan^H1835. And they turned^H5437^(H8686) their faces^H6440, and said^H559^(H8799) unto Micah^H4318, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company^H2199^(H8738)?

²⁴ He said, “You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and have gone away! What more do I have? How can you ask me, ‘What ails you?’”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Ye have taken away^H3947^(H8804) my gods^H430 which I made^H6213^(H8804), and the priest^H3548, and ye are gone away^H3212^(H8799): and what have I more? and what is this that ye say^H559^(H8799) unto me, What aileth thee?

²⁵ The children of Dan said to him, “Don’t let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall on you, and you lose your life, with the lives of your household.”

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Dan^H1835 said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Let not thy voice^H6963 be heard^H8085^(H8686) among us, lest angry^H4751^H5315 fellows^H582 run^H6293^(H8799) upon thee, and thou lose^H622^(H8804) thy life^H5315, with the lives^H5315 of thy household^H1004.

²⁶ The children of Dan went their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Dan^H1835 went^H3212^(H8799) their way^H1870: and when Micah^H4318 saw^H7200^(H8799) that they were too strong^H2389 for him, he turned^H6437^(H8799) and went back^H7725^(H8799) unto his house^H1004.

²⁷ They took that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and struck them with the edge of the sword; then they burned the city with fire.

KJVAnd they took^H3947^(H8804) the things which Micah^H4318 had made^H6213^(H8804), and the priest^H3548 which he had, and came^H935^(H8799) unto Laish^H3919, unto a people^H5971 that were at quiet^H8252^(H8802) and secure^H982^(H8802): and they smote^H5221^(H8686) them with the edge^H6310 of the sword^H2719, and burnt^H8313^(H8804) the city^H5892 with fire^H784.

²⁸ There was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with anyone else; and it was in the valley that lies by Beth Rehob. They built the city and lived in it.

KJVAnd there was no deliverer^H5337^(H8688), because it was far^H7350 from Zidon^H6721, and they had no business^H1697 with any man^H120; and it was in the valley^H6010 that lieth by Bethrehob^H1050. And they built^H1129^(H8799) a city^H5892, and dwelt^H3427^(H8799) therein.

²⁹ They called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; however the name of the city used to be Laish.

KJVAnd they called^H7121^(H8799) the name^H8034 of the city^H5892 Dan^H1835, after the name^H8034 of Dan^H1835 their father^H1, who was born^H3205^(H8795) unto Israel^H3478: howbeit^H199 the name^H8034 of the city^H5892 was Laish^H3919 at the first^H7223.

³⁰ The children of Dan set up for themselves the engraved image; and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Dan^H1835 set up^H6965^(H8686) the graven image^H6459: and Jonathan^H3083, the son^H1121 of Gershom^H1647, the son^H1121 of Manasseh^H4519, he and his sons^H1121 were priests^H3548 to the tribe^H7626 of Dan^H1839 until the day^H3117 of the captivity^H1540^(H8800) of the land^H776.

³¹ So they set up for themselves Micah’s engraved image which he made, and it remained all the time that God’s house was in Shiloh.

¹There was a man of the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Micah.

KJVAnd there was a man^H376 of mount^H2022 Ephraim^H669, whose name^H8034 was Micah^H4321.

² He said to his mother, “The eleven hundred pieces of silver that were taken from you, about which you uttered a curse, and also spoke it in my ears—behold, the silver is with me. I took it.” His mother said, “May Yahweh bless my son!”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto his mother^H517, The eleven hundred^H505^H3967 shekels of silver^H3701 that were taken^H3947^(H8795) from thee, about which thou cursedst^H422^(H8804), and spakest^H559^(H8804) of also in mine ears^H241, behold, the silver^H3701 is with me; I took^H3947^(H8804) it. ³ He restored the eleven hundred pieces of silver to his mother, then his mother said, “I most certainly dedicate the silver to Yahweh from my hand for my son, to make a carved image and a molten image. Now therefore I will restore it to you.”

⁴ When he restored the money to his mother, his mother took two hundred pieces of silver, and gave them to a silversmith, who made a carved image and a molten image out of it. It was in the house of Micah.

⁵ The man Micah had a house of gods, and he made an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

KJVAnd the man^H376 Micah^H4318 had an house^H1004 of gods^H430, and made^H6213^(H8799) an ephod^H646, and teraphim^H8655, and consecrated^H4390^(H8762)^H3027 one^H259 of his sons^H1121, who became his priest^H3548.

⁶ In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did that which was right in his own eyes.

KJVIn those days^H3117 there was no king^H4428 in Israel^H3478, but every man^H376 did^H6213^(H8799) that which was right^H3477 in his own eyes^H5869.

⁷ There was a young man out of Bethlehem Judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite; and he lived there.

KJVAnd there was a young man^H5288 out of Bethlehemjudah^H1035^H3063 of the family^H4940 of Judah^H3063, who was a Levite^H3881, and he sojourned^H1481^(H8804) there.

⁸ The man departed out of the city, out of Bethlehem Judah, to live where he could find a place, and he came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, as he traveled.

⁹ Micah said to him, “Where did you come from?” He said to him, “I am a Levite of Bethlehem Judah, and I am looking for a place to live.”

¹⁰ Micah said to him, “Dwell with me, and be to me a father and a priest, and I will give you ten pieces of silver per year, a suit of clothing, and your food.” So the Levite went in.

KJVAnd Micah^H4318 said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Dwell^H3427^(H8798) with me, and be unto me a father^H1 and a priest^H3548, and I will give^H5414^(H8799) thee ten^H6235 shekels of silver^H3701 by the year^H3117, and a suit^H6187 of apparel^H899, and thy victuals^H4241. So the Levite^H3881 went in^H3212^(H8799).

¹¹ The Levite was content to dwell with the man; and the young man was to him as one of his sons.

KJVAnd the Levite^H3881 was content^H2974^(H8686) to dwell^H3427^(H8800) with the man^H376; and the young man^H5288 was unto him as one^H259 of his sons^H1121.

¹² Micah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah.

KJVAnd Micah^H4318 consecrated^H4390^(H8762)^H3027 the Levite^H3881; and the young man^H5288 became his priest^H3548, and was in the house^H1004 of Micah^H4318.

¹³ Then Micah said, “Now I know that Yahweh will do good to me, since I have a Levite as my priest.”

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) Micah^H4318, Now know^H3045^(H8804) I that the LORD^H3068 will do me good^H3190^(H8686), seeing I have a Levite^H3881 to my priest^H3548.
