Elijah and Elisha

1 Kings 17 · Elijah the Tishbite, of Gilead

    Elijah and ElishaThe prophets of Israel · c. 870–800 BC. Elijah’s road (terracotta): from Tishbe in Gilead into hiding by the brook Cherith east of the Jordan (1 Kings 17:3 — the wadi cannot be identified and is left unmarked), to the widow at Zarephath in Sidon’s country, to the contest on Carmel (18), his run before Ahab’s chariot to Jezreel, and his flight from Jezebel to Beersheba and on past the edge of the map — forty days to Horeb, where the Lord was not in the wind (19). The return is drawn as the Jordan-valley road to Abel-meholah, where Elisha was plowing. His last journey runs Gilgal — Bethel — Jericho — across the Jordan, where the whirlwind took him (2 Kings 2); the Gilgal meant is likely the one in the hill country, not Jericho’s. Elisha’s road (slate) doubles it back — Jordan, Jericho, Bethel — then Carmel and Samaria (2:25), the Shunammite’s room at Shunem (4), the siege at Dothan (6), and Damascus, where he wept over what Hazael would do (8). Tishbe is placed at el-Istib and Abel-meholah at Tell Abu Sus; both identifications are disputed. Jerusalem is marked for bearings only. Rings mark where each road begins and ends, the double ring east of Jordan being where one ends and the other begins. Arrows give the direction of travel, and where a road was walked out and back the two passages run side by side. The numerals give the order of the journeys, 1-7 Elijah and 8-15 Elisha, each in its own ink.
