Places of the Bible
Bethany
first named in John 1:28
Where the name appears
Events told in passages that name Bethany, and how many of their verses do. That is not the same as saying they happened here: a place can be named as a landmark, as somewhere being travelled to, or as the subject of a prophecy.

Easton’s Bible Dictionary
The Revised Version in John 1:28 has this word instead of Bethabara, on the authority of the oldest manuscripts. It appears to have been the name of a place on the east of Jordan.
