¹Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

² Sarai said to Abram, “See now, Yahweh has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my servant. It may be that I will obtain children by her.” Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

KJVAnd Sarai^H8297 said^H559^(H8799) unto Abram^H87, Behold now, the LORD^H3068 hath restrained me^H6113^(H8804) from bearing^H3205^(H8800): I pray thee, go in^H935^(H8798) unto my maid^H8198; it may^H194 be that I may obtain children^H1129^(H8735) by her. And Abram^H87 hearkened^H8085^(H8799) to the voice^H6963 of Sarai^H8297.

³ Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.

⁴ He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

⁵ Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong is your fault. I gave my servant into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, she despised me. May Yahweh judge between me and you.”

KJVAnd Sarai^H8297 said^H559^(H8799) unto Abram^H87, My wrong^H2555 be upon thee: I have given^H5414^(H8804) my maid^H8198 into thy bosom^H2436; and when she saw^H7200^(H8799) that she had conceived^H2029^(H8804), I was despised^H7043^(H8799) in her eyes^H5869: the LORD^H3068 judge^H8199^(H8799) between me and thee.

⁶ But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes.” Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.

KJVBut Abram^H87 said^H559^(H8799) unto Sarai^H8297, Behold, thy maid^H8198 is in thy hand^H3027; do^H6213^(H8798) to her as it pleaseth thee^H2896^H5869. And when Sarai^H8297 dealt hardly with^H6031^(H8762) her, she fled^H1272^(H8799) from her face^H6440.

⁷ Yahweh’s angel found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to Shur.

KJVAnd the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 found her^H4672^(H8799) by a fountain^H5869 of water^H4325 in the wilderness^H4057, by the fountain^H5869 in the way^H1870 to Shur^H7793.

⁸ He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where did you come from? Where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Hagar^H1904, Sarai's^H8297 maid^H8198, whence^H335 camest thou^H935^(H8804)? and whither wilt thou go^H3212^(H8799)? And she said^H559^(H8799), I flee^H1272^(H8802) from the face^H6440 of my mistress^H1404 Sarai^H8297.

⁹ Yahweh’s angel said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.”

KJVAnd the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto her, Return^H7725^(H8798) to thy mistress^H1404, and submit^H6031^(H8690) thyself under her hands^H3027.

¹⁰ Yahweh’s angel said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, that they will not be counted for multitude.”

KJVAnd the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto her, I will multiply^H7235^(H8686) thy seed^H2233 exceedingly^H7235^(H8687), that it shall not be numbered^H5608^(H8735) for multitude^H7230.

¹¹ Yahweh’s angel said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.

KJVAnd the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto her, Behold^H2009, thou art with child^H2030, and shalt bear^H3205^(H8802) a son^H1121, and shalt call^H7121^(H8804) his name^H8034 Ishmael^H3458; because the LORD^H3068 hath heard^H8085^(H8804) thy affliction^H6040.

¹² He will be like a wild donkey among men. His hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. He will live opposed to all of his brothers.”

KJVAnd he will be a wild^H6501 man^H120; his hand^H3027 will be against every man, and every man's hand^H3027 against him; and he shall dwell^H7931^(H8799) in the presence^H6440 of all his brethren^H251.

¹³ She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees,” for she said, “Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?”

¹⁴ Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

¹⁵ Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.

KJVAnd Hagar^H1904 bare^H3205^(H8799) Abram^H87 a son^H1121: and Abram^H87 called^H7121^(H8799) his son's^H1121 name^H8034, which Hagar^H1904 bare^H3205^(H8804), Ishmael^H3458.

¹⁶ Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

KJVAnd Abram^H87 was fourscore^H8084^H8141 and six^H8337 years^H8141 old^H1121, when Hagar^H1904 bare^H3205^(H8800) Ishmael^H3458 to Abram^H87.

¹After these things Yahweh’s word came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

² Abram said, “Lord Yahweh, what will you give me, since I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”

³ Abram said, “Behold, you have given no children to me: and, behold, one born in my house is my heir.”

⁴ Behold, Yahweh’s word came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir, but he who will come out of your own body will be your heir.”

KJVAnd, behold, the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto him, saying^H559^(H8800), This shall not be thine heir^H3423^(H8799); but he that shall come forth^H3318^(H8799) out of thine own bowels^H4578 shall be thine heir^H3423^(H8799).

⁵ Yahweh brought him outside, and said, “Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” He said to Abram, “So your offspring will be.”

⁶ He believed in Yahweh, who credited it to him for righteousness.

⁷ He said to Abram, “I am Yahweh who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give you this land to inherit it.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto him, I am the LORD^H3068 that brought thee out^H3318^(H8689) of Ur^H218 of the Chaldees^H3778, to give^H5414^(H8800) thee this land^H776 to inherit^H3423^(H8800) it.

⁸ He said, “Lord Yahweh, how will I know that I will inherit it?”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Lord^H136 GOD^H3069, whereby^H4100 shall I know^H3045^(H8799) that I shall inherit it^H3423^(H8799)?

⁹ He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Take^H3947^(H8798) me an heifer^H5697 of three years old^H8027^(H8794), and a she goat^H5795 of three years old^H8027^(H8794), and a ram^H352 of three years old^H8027^(H8794), and a turtledove^H8449, and a young pigeon^H1469.

¹⁰ He brought him all these, and divided them in the middle, and laid each half opposite the other; but he didn’t divide the birds.

¹¹ The birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

¹² When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. Now terror and great darkness fell on him.

¹³ He said to Abram, “Know for sure that your offspring will live as foreigners in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them. They will afflict them four hundred years.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto Abram^H87, Know^H3045^(H8799) of a surety^H3045^(H8800) that thy seed^H2233 shall be a stranger^H1616 in a land^H776 that is not theirs, and shall serve^H5647^(H8804) them; and they shall afflict^H6031^(H8765) them four^H702 hundred^H3967 years^H8141;

¹⁴ I will also judge that nation, whom they will serve. Afterward they will come out with great wealth;

KJVAnd also that nation^H1471, whom they shall serve^H5647^(H8799), will I judge^H1777^(H8802): and afterward^H310^H3651 shall they come out^H3318^(H8799) with great^H1419 substance^H7399.

¹⁵ but you will go to your fathers in peace. You will be buried at a good old age.

KJVAnd thou shalt go^H935^(H8799) to thy fathers^H1 in peace^H7965; thou shalt be buried^H6912^(H8735) in a good^H2896 old age^H7872.

¹⁶ In the fourth generation they will come here again, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet full.”

KJVBut in the fourth^H7243 generation^H1755 they shall come hither^H2008 again^H7725^(H8799): for the iniquity^H5771 of the Amorites^H567 is not yet^H2008 full^H8003.

¹⁷ It came to pass that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.

¹⁸ In that day Yahweh made a covenant with Abram, saying, “I have given this land to your offspring, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates:

¹⁹ the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,

²⁰ the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,

KJVAnd the Hittites^H2850, and the Perizzites^H6522, and the Rephaims^H7497,

²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
