¹After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

² He said, “Now take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of.”

³ Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his donkey; and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which God had told him.

⁴ On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place far off.

⁵ Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there. We will worship, and come back to you.”

⁶ Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. He took in his hand the fire and the knife. They both went together.

⁷ Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, “My father?” He said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

⁸ Abraham said, “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they both went together.

⁹ They came to the place which God had told him of. Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on the wood.

¹⁰ Abraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to kill his son.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 stretched forth^H7971^(H8799) his hand^H3027, and took^H3947^(H8799) the knife^H3979 to slay^H7819^(H8800) his son^H1121.

¹¹ Yahweh’s angel called to him out of the sky, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

KJVAnd the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 called^H7121^(H8799) unto him out of heaven^H8064, and said^H559^(H8799), Abraham^H85, Abraham^H85: and he said^H559^(H8799), Here am I.

¹² He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

¹³ Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

¹⁴ Abraham called the name of that place “Yahweh Will Provide”. As it is said to this day, “On Yahweh’s mountain, it will be provided.”

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 called^H7121^(H8799) the name^H8034 of that place^H4725 Jehovahjireh^H3070: as^H834 it is said^H559^(H8735) to this day^H3117, In the mount^H2022 of the LORD^H3068 it shall be seen^H7200^(H8735).

¹⁵ Yahweh’s angel called to Abraham a second time out of the sky,

KJVAnd the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 called^H7121^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85 out of heaven^H8064 the second time^H8145,

¹⁶ and said, “‘I have sworn by myself,’ says Yahweh, ‘because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son,

KJVAnd said^H559^(H8799), By myself have I sworn^H7650^(H8738), saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068, for because^H3282^H834 thou hast done^H6213^(H8804) this thing^H1697, and hast not^H3808 withheld^H2820^(H8804) thy son^H1121, thine only^H3173 son:

¹⁷ that I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply your offspring greatly like the stars of the heavens, and like the sand which is on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the gate of his enemies.

KJVThat in blessing^H1288^(H8763) I will bless^H1288^(H8762) thee, and in multiplying^H7235^(H8687) I will multiply^H7235^(H8686) thy seed^H2233 as the stars^H3556 of the heaven^H8064, and as the sand^H2344 which is upon the sea^H3220 shore^H8193; and thy seed^H2233 shall possess^H3423^(H8799) the gate^H8179 of his enemies^H341^(H8802);

¹⁸ All the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring, because you have obeyed my voice.’”

KJVAnd in thy seed^H2233 shall all the nations^H1471 of the earth^H776 be blessed^H1288^(H8694); because^H834^H6118 thou hast obeyed^H8085^(H8804) my voice^H6963.

¹⁹ So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba. Abraham lived at Beersheba.

KJVSo Abraham^H85 returned^H7725^(H8799) unto his young men^H5288, and they rose up^H6965^(H8799) and went^H3212^(H8799) together^H3162 to Beersheba^H884; and Abraham^H85 dwelt^H3427^(H8799) at Beersheba^H884.

²⁰ After these things, Abraham was told, “Behold, Milcah, she also has borne children to your brother Nahor:

²¹ Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,

²² Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”

KJVAnd Chesed^H3777, and Hazo^H2375, and Pildash^H6394, and Jidlaph^H3044, and Bethuel^H1328.

²³ Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.

KJVAnd Bethuel^H1328 begat^H3205^(H8804) Rebekah^H7259: these eight^H8083 Milcah^H4435 did bear^H3205^(H8804) to Nahor^H5152, Abraham's^H85 brother^H251.

²⁴ His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

KJVAnd his concubine^H6370, whose name^H8034 was Reumah^H7208, she bare^H3205^(H8799) also Tebah^H2875, and Gaham^H1514, and Thahash^H8477, and Maachah^H4601.

¹Yahweh visited Sarah as he had said, and Yahweh did to Sarah as he had spoken.

² Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

³ Abraham called his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.

⁴ Abraham circumcised his son, Isaac, when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

⁵ Abraham was one hundred years old when his son, Isaac, was born to him.

⁶ Sarah said, “God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears will laugh with me.”

KJVAnd Sarah^H8283 said^H559^(H8799), God^H430 hath made^H6213^(H8804) me to laugh^H6712, so that all that hear^H8085^(H8802) will laugh^H6711^(H8799) with me.

⁷ She said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.”

KJVAnd she said^H559^(H8799), Who would have said^H4448^(H8765) unto Abraham^H85, that Sarah^H8283 should have given children^H1121 suck^H3243^(H8689)? for I have born^H3205^(H8804) him a son^H1121 in his old age^H2208.

⁸ The child grew and was weaned. Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

KJVAnd the child^H3206 grew^H1431^(H8799), and was weaned^H1580^(H8735): and Abraham^H85 made^H6213^(H8799) a great^H1419 feast^H4960 the same day^H3117 that Isaac^H3327 was weaned^H1580^(H8736).

⁹ Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.

KJVAnd Sarah^H8283 saw^H7200^(H8799) the son^H1121 of Hagar^H1904 the Egyptian^H4713, which she had born^H3205^(H8804) unto Abraham^H85, mocking^H6711^(H8764).

¹⁰ Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this servant and her son! For the son of this servant will not be heir with my son, Isaac.”

KJVWherefore she said^H559^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85, Cast out^H1644^(H8761) this bondwoman^H519 and her son^H1121: for the son^H1121 of this bondwoman^H519 shall not be heir^H3423^(H8799) with my son^H1121, even with Isaac^H3327.

¹¹ The thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight on account of his son.

¹² God said to Abraham, “Don’t let it be grievous in your sight because of the boy, and because of your servant. In all that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice. For your offspring will be named through Isaac.

KJVAnd God^H430 said^H559^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85, Let it not be grievous^H3415^(H8799) in thy sight^H5869 because of the lad^H5288, and because of thy bondwoman^H519; in all that Sarah^H8283 hath said^H559^(H8799) unto thee, hearken^H8085^(H8798) unto her voice^H6963; for in Isaac^H3327 shall thy seed^H2233 be called^H7121^(H8735).

¹³ I will also make a nation of the son of the servant, because he is your child.”

¹⁴ Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a container of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder; and gave her the child, and sent her away. She departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

¹⁶ She went and sat down opposite him, a good way off, about a bow shot away. For she said, “Don’t let me see the death of the child.” She sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.

¹⁷ God heard the voice of the boy. The angel of God called to Hagar out of the sky, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Don’t be afraid. For God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.

¹⁸ Get up, lift up the boy, and hold him with your hand. For I will make him a great nation.”

¹⁹ God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, filled the container with water, and gave the boy a drink.

²⁰ God was with the boy, and he grew. He lived in the wilderness, and as he grew up, he became an archer.

²¹ He lived in the wilderness of Paran. His mother got a wife for him out of the land of Egypt.

²² At that time, Abimelech and Phicol the captain of his army spoke to Abraham, saying, “God is with you in all that you do.

KJVAnd it came to pass at that time^H6256, that Abimelech^H40 and Phichol^H6369 the chief captain^H8269 of his host^H6635 spake^H559^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85, saying^H559^(H8800), God^H430 is with thee in all that thou doest^H6213^(H8802):

²³ Now, therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son. But according to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me, and to the land in which you have lived as a foreigner.”

KJVNow therefore swear^H7650^(H8734) unto me here^H2008 by God^H430 that thou wilt not deal falsely^H8266^(H8799) with me, nor with my son^H5209, nor with my son's son^H5220: but according to the kindness^H2617 that I have done^H6213^(H8804) unto thee, thou shalt do^H6213^(H8799) unto me, and to the land^H776 wherein thou hast sojourned^H1481^(H8804).

²⁴ Abraham said, “I will swear.”

²⁵ Abraham complained to Abimelech because of a water well, which Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 reproved^H3198^(H8689) Abimelech^H40 because^H182 of a well^H875 of water^H4325, which Abimelech's^H40 servants^H5650 had violently taken away^H1497^(H8804).

²⁶ Abimelech said, “I don’t know who has done this thing. You didn’t tell me, and I didn’t hear of it until today.”

KJVAnd Abimelech^H40 said^H559^(H8799), I wot^H3045^(H8804) not who hath done^H6213^(H8804) this thing^H1697: neither^H3808 didst thou tell^H5046^(H8689) me, neither^H3808 yet heard^H8085^(H8804) I of it, but^H1115 to day^H3117.

²⁷ Abraham took sheep and cattle, and gave them to Abimelech. Those two made a covenant.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 took^H3947^(H8799) sheep^H6629 and oxen^H1241, and gave^H5414^(H8799) them unto Abimelech^H40; and both of them^H8147 made^H3772^(H8799) a covenant^H1285.

²⁸ Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.

²⁹ Abimelech said to Abraham, “What do these seven ewe lambs, which you have set by themselves, mean?”

KJVAnd Abimelech^H40 said^H559^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85, What^H2008 mean these seven^H7651 ewe lambs^H3535 which thou hast set^H5324^(H8689) by themselves?

³⁰ He said, “You shall take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that it may be a witness to me, that I have dug this well.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), For these seven^H7651 ewe lambs^H3535 shalt thou take^H3947^(H8799) of my hand^H3027, that^H5668 they may be a witness^H5713 unto me, that I have digged^H2658^(H8804) this well^H875.

³¹ Therefore he called that place Beersheba, because they both swore an oath there.

³² So they made a covenant at Beersheba. Abimelech rose up with Phicol, the captain of his army, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.

³³ Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of Yahweh, the Everlasting God.

³⁴ Abraham lived as a foreigner in the land of the Philistines many days.
