¹Sarah lived one hundred twenty-seven years. This was the length of Sarah’s life.

² Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron), in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

KJVAnd Sarah^H8283 died^H4191^(H8799) in Kirjatharba^H7153; the same is Hebron^H2275 in the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667: and Abraham^H85 came^H935^(H8799) to mourn^H5594^(H8800) for Sarah^H8283, and to weep^H1058^(H8800) for her.

³ Abraham rose up from before his dead and spoke to the children of Heth, saying,

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 stood up^H6965^(H8799) from before^H6440 his dead^H4191^(H8801), and spake^H1696^(H8762) unto the sons^H1121 of Heth^H2845, saying^H559^(H8800),

⁴ “I am a stranger and a foreigner living with you. Give me a possession of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

⁵ The children of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,

⁶ “Hear us, my lord. You are a prince of God among us. Bury your dead in the best of our tombs. None of us will withhold from you his tomb. Bury your dead.”

⁷ Abraham rose up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the children of Heth.

⁸ He talked with them, saying, “If you agree that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,

⁹ that he may sell me the cave of Machpelah, which he has, which is in the end of his field. For the full price let him sell it to me among you as a possession for a burial place.”

¹⁰ Now Ephron was sitting in the middle of the children of Heth. Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the children of Heth, even of all who went in at the gate of his city, saying,

KJVAnd Ephron^H6085 dwelt^H3427^(H8802) among^H8432 the children^H1121 of Heth^H2845: and Ephron^H6085 the Hittite^H2850 answered^H6030^(H8799) Abraham^H85 in the audience^H241 of the children^H1121 of Heth^H2845, even of all that went in^H935^(H8802) at the gate^H8179 of his city^H5892, saying^H559^(H8800),

¹¹ “No, my lord, hear me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the presence of the children of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.”

¹² Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 bowed down^H7812^(H8691) himself before^H6440 the people^H5971 of the land^H776.

¹³ He spoke to Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, “But if you will, please hear me. I will give the price of the field. Take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.”

KJVAnd he spake^H1696^(H8762) unto Ephron^H6085 in the audience^H241 of the people^H5971 of the land^H776, saying^H559^(H8800), But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee^H3863, hear^H8085^(H8798) me: I will give^H5414^(H8804) thee money^H3701 for the field^H7704; take^H3947^(H8798) it of me, and I will bury^H6912^(H8799) my dead^H4191^(H8801) there.

¹⁴ Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,

¹⁵ “My lord, listen to me. What is a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver between me and you? Therefore bury your dead.”

KJVMy lord^H113, hearken^H8085^(H8798) unto me: the land^H776 is worth four^H702 hundred^H3967 shekels^H8255 of silver^H3701; what is that betwixt^H996 me and thee? bury^H6912^(H8798) therefore thy dead^H4191^(H8801).

¹⁶ Abraham listened to Ephron. Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver which he had named in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the current merchants’ standard.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 hearkened^H8085^(H8799) unto Ephron^H6085; and Abraham^H85 weighed^H8254^(H8799) to Ephron^H6085 the silver^H3701, which he had named^H1696^(H8765) in the audience^H241 of the sons^H1121 of Heth^H2845, four^H702 hundred^H3967 shekels^H8255 of silver^H3701, current^H5674^(H8802) money with the merchant^H5503^(H8802).

¹⁷ So the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all of its borders, were deeded

¹⁸ to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.

¹⁹ After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre (that is, Hebron), in the land of Canaan.

KJVAnd after^H310 this^H3651, Abraham^H85 buried^H6912^(H8804) Sarah^H8283 his wife^H802 in the cave^H4631 of the field^H7704 of Machpelah^H4375 before^H6440 Mamre^H4471: the same is Hebron^H2275 in the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667.

²⁰ The field, and the cave that is in it, were deeded to Abraham by the children of Heth as a possession for a burial place.

KJVAnd the field^H7704, and the cave^H4631 that is therein, were made sure^H6965^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85 for a possession^H272 of a buryingplace^H6913 by the sons^H1121 of Heth^H2845.

¹After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

KJVAnd it came to pass after^H310 these things^H1697, that God^H430 did tempt^H5254^(H8765) Abraham^H85, and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Abraham^H85: and he said^H559^(H8799), Behold, here I am.

² He said, “Now take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of.”

³ Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his donkey; and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which God had told him.

⁴ On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place far off.

⁵ Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there. We will worship, and come back to you.”

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 said^H559^(H8799) unto his young men^H5288, Abide^H3427^(H8798) ye here with the ass^H2543; and I and the lad^H5288 will go^H3212^(H8799) yonder^H3541 and worship^H7812^(H8691), and come again^H7725^(H8799) to you.

⁶ Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. He took in his hand the fire and the knife. They both went together.

⁷ Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, “My father?” He said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

KJVAnd Isaac^H3327 spake^H559^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85 his father^H1, and said^H559^(H8799), My father^H1: and he said^H559^(H8799), Here am I, my son^H1121. And he said^H559^(H8799), Behold the fire^H784 and the wood^H6086: but where is the lamb^H7716 for a burnt offering^H5930?

⁸ Abraham said, “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they both went together.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 said^H559^(H8799), My son^H1121, God^H430 will provide^H7200^(H8799) himself a lamb^H7716 for a burnt offering^H5930: so they went^H3212^(H8799) both of them^H8147 together^H3162.

⁹ They came to the place which God had told him of. Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on the wood.

¹⁰ Abraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to kill his son.

¹¹ Yahweh’s angel called to him out of the sky, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

KJVAnd the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 called^H7121^(H8799) unto him out of heaven^H8064, and said^H559^(H8799), Abraham^H85, Abraham^H85: and he said^H559^(H8799), Here am I.

¹² He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

¹³ Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

¹⁴ Abraham called the name of that place “Yahweh Will Provide”. As it is said to this day, “On Yahweh’s mountain, it will be provided.”

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 called^H7121^(H8799) the name^H8034 of that place^H4725 Jehovahjireh^H3070: as^H834 it is said^H559^(H8735) to this day^H3117, In the mount^H2022 of the LORD^H3068 it shall be seen^H7200^(H8735).

¹⁵ Yahweh’s angel called to Abraham a second time out of the sky,

KJVAnd the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 called^H7121^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85 out of heaven^H8064 the second time^H8145,

¹⁶ and said, “‘I have sworn by myself,’ says Yahweh, ‘because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son,

KJVAnd said^H559^(H8799), By myself have I sworn^H7650^(H8738), saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068, for because^H3282^H834 thou hast done^H6213^(H8804) this thing^H1697, and hast not^H3808 withheld^H2820^(H8804) thy son^H1121, thine only^H3173 son:

¹⁷ that I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply your offspring greatly like the stars of the heavens, and like the sand which is on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the gate of his enemies.

KJVThat in blessing^H1288^(H8763) I will bless^H1288^(H8762) thee, and in multiplying^H7235^(H8687) I will multiply^H7235^(H8686) thy seed^H2233 as the stars^H3556 of the heaven^H8064, and as the sand^H2344 which is upon the sea^H3220 shore^H8193; and thy seed^H2233 shall possess^H3423^(H8799) the gate^H8179 of his enemies^H341^(H8802);

¹⁸ All the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring, because you have obeyed my voice.’”

KJVAnd in thy seed^H2233 shall all the nations^H1471 of the earth^H776 be blessed^H1288^(H8694); because^H834^H6118 thou hast obeyed^H8085^(H8804) my voice^H6963.

¹⁹ So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba. Abraham lived at Beersheba.

²⁰ After these things, Abraham was told, “Behold, Milcah, she also has borne children to your brother Nahor:

²¹ Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,

²² Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”

KJVAnd Chesed^H3777, and Hazo^H2375, and Pildash^H6394, and Jidlaph^H3044, and Bethuel^H1328.

²³ Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.

KJVAnd Bethuel^H1328 begat^H3205^(H8804) Rebekah^H7259: these eight^H8083 Milcah^H4435 did bear^H3205^(H8804) to Nahor^H5152, Abraham's^H85 brother^H251.

²⁴ His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

KJVAnd his concubine^H6370, whose name^H8034 was Reumah^H7208, she bare^H3205^(H8799) also Tebah^H2875, and Gaham^H1514, and Thahash^H8477, and Maachah^H4601.
