¹Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

KJVAgain the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto me, saying^H559^(H8800),

² “Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and tell them, ‘When I bring the sword on a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman,

KJVSon^H1121 of man^H120, speak^H1696^(H8761) to the children^H1121 of thy people^H5971, and say^H559^(H8804) unto them, When I bring^H935^(H8686) the sword^H2719 upon a land^H776, if the people^H5971 of the land^H776 take^H3947^(H8804) a^H259 man^H376 of their coasts^H7097, and set^H5414^(H8804) him for their watchman^H6822^(H8802):

³ if, when he sees the sword come on the land, he blows the trumpet and warns the people,

KJVIf when he seeth^H7200^(H8804) the sword^H2719 come^H935^(H8802) upon the land^H776, he blow^H8628^(H8804) the trumpet^H7782, and warn^H2094^(H8689) the people^H5971;

⁴ then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and doesn’t heed the warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head.

KJVThen whosoever^H8085^(H8802) heareth^H8085^(H8804) the sound^H6963 of the trumpet^H7782, and taketh not warning^H2094^(H8737); if the sword^H2719 come^H935^(H8799), and take him away^H3947^(H8799), his blood^H1818 shall be upon his own head^H7218.

⁵ He heard the sound of the trumpet and didn’t take warning. His blood will be on him; whereas if he had heeded the warning, he would have delivered his soul.

KJVHe heard^H8085^(H8804) the sound^H6963 of the trumpet^H7782, and took not warning^H2094^(H8737); his blood^H1818 shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning^H2094^(H8737) shall deliver^H4422^(H8765) his soul^H5315.

⁶ But if the watchman sees the sword come and doesn’t blow the trumpet, and the people aren’t warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’

⁷ “So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel. Therefore hear the word from my mouth, and give them warnings from me.

KJVSo thou, O son^H1121 of man^H120, I have set^H5414^(H8804) thee a watchman^H6822^(H8802) unto the house^H1004 of Israel^H3478; therefore thou shalt hear^H8085^(H8804) the word^H1697 at my mouth^H6310, and warn^H2094^(H8689) them from me.

⁸ When I tell the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you don’t speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand.

⁹ Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he doesn’t turn from his way; he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.

KJVNevertheless, if thou warn^H2094^(H8689) the wicked^H7563 of his way^H1870 to turn^H7725^(H8800) from it; if he do not turn^H7725^(H8804) from his way^H1870, he shall die^H4191^(H8799) in his iniquity^H5771; but thou hast delivered^H5337^(H8689) thy soul^H5315.

¹⁰ “You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: ‘You say this, “Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them. How then can we live?”’

KJVTherefore, O thou son^H1121 of man^H120, speak^H559^(H8798) unto the house^H1004 of Israel^H3478; Thus ye speak^H559^(H8804), saying^H559^(H8800), If our transgressions^H6588 and our sins^H2403 be upon us, and we pine away^H4743^(H8737) in them, how should we then live^H2421^(H8799)?

¹¹ Tell them, ‘“As I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why will you die, house of Israel?”’

¹² “You, son of man, tell the children of your people, ‘The righteousness of the righteous will not deliver him in the day of his disobedience. And as for the wickedness of the wicked, he will not fall by it in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither will he who is righteous be able to live by it in the day that he sins.

KJVTherefore, thou son^H1121 of man^H120, say^H559^(H8798) unto the children^H1121 of thy people^H5971, The righteousness^H6666 of the righteous^H6662 shall not deliver^H5337^(H8686) him in the day^H3117 of his transgression^H6588: as for the wickedness^H7564 of the wicked^H7563, he shall not fall^H3782^(H8735) thereby in the day^H3117 that he turneth^H7725^(H8800) from his wickedness^H7562; neither shall the righteous^H6662 be able^H3201^(H8799) to live^H2421^(H8800) for his righteousness in the day^H3117 that he sinneth^H2398^(H8800).

¹³ When I tell the righteous that he will surely live, if he trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but he will die in his iniquity that he has committed.

KJVWhen I shall say^H559^(H8800) to the righteous^H6662, that he shall surely^H2421^(H8800) live^H2421^(H8799); if he trust^H982^(H8804) to his own righteousness^H6666, and commit^H6213^(H8804) iniquity^H5766, all his righteousnesses^H6666 shall not be remembered^H2142^(H8735); but for his iniquity^H5766 that he hath committed^H6213^(H8804), he shall die^H4191^(H8799) for it.

¹⁴ Again, when I say to the wicked, “You will surely die,” if he turns from his sin and does that which is lawful and right,

KJVAgain, when I say^H559^(H8800) unto the wicked^H7563, Thou shalt surely^H4191^(H8800) die^H4191^(H8799); if he turn^H7725^(H8804) from his sin^H2403, and do^H6213^(H8804) that which is lawful^H4941 and right^H6666;

¹⁵ if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that which he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity, he will surely live. He will not die.

¹⁶ None of his sins that he has committed will be remembered against him. He has done that which is lawful and right. He will surely live.

KJVNone of his sins^H2403 that he hath committed^H2398^(H8804) shall be mentioned^H2142^(H8735) unto him: he hath done^H6213^(H8804) that which is lawful^H4941 and right^H6666; he shall surely^H2421^(H8800) live^H2421^(H8799).

¹⁷ “‘Yet the children of your people say, “The way of the Lord is not fair;” but as for them, their way is not fair.

KJVYet the children^H1121 of thy people^H5971 say^H559^(H8804), The way^H1870 of the Lord^H136 is not equal^H8505^(H8735): but as for them, their way^H1870 is not equal^H8505^(H8735).

¹⁸ When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he will even die therein.

KJVWhen the righteous^H6662 turneth^H7725^(H8800) from his righteousness^H6666, and committeth^H6213^(H8804) iniquity^H5766, he shall even die^H4191^(H8804) thereby.

¹⁹ When the wicked turns from his wickedness and does that which is lawful and right, he will live by it.

KJVBut if the wicked^H7563 turn^H7725^(H8800) from his wickedness^H7564, and do^H6213^(H8804) that which is lawful^H4941 and right^H6666, he shall live^H2421^(H8799) thereby.

²⁰ Yet you say, “The way of the Lord is not fair.” House of Israel, I will judge every one of you after his ways.’”

KJVYet ye say^H559^(H8804), The way^H1870 of the Lord^H136 is not equal^H8505^(H8735). O ye house^H1004 of Israel^H3478, I will judge^H8199^(H8799) you every one^H376 after his ways^H1870.

²¹ In the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, one who had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me, saying, “The city has been defeated!”

KJVAnd it came to pass in the twelfth^H8147^H6240 year^H8141 of our captivity^H1546, in the tenth^H6224 month, in the fifth^H2568 day of the month^H2320, that one that had escaped^H6412 out of Jerusalem^H3389 came^H935^(H8804) unto me, saying^H559^(H8800), The city^H5892 is smitten^H5221^(H8717).

²² Now Yahweh’s hand had been on me in the evening, before he who had escaped came; and he had opened my mouth until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.

²³ Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

²⁴ “Son of man, those who inhabit the waste places in the land of Israel speak, saying, ‘Abraham was one, and he inherited the land; but we are many. The land is given us for inheritance.’

KJVSon^H1121 of man^H120, they that inhabit^H3427^(H8802) those wastes^H2723 of the land^H127 of Israel^H3478 speak^H559^(H8802), saying^H559^(H8800), Abraham^H85 was one^H259, and he inherited^H3423^(H8799) the land^H776: but we are many^H7227; the land^H776 is given^H5414^(H8738) us for inheritance^H4181.

²⁵ Therefore tell them, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “You eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood. So should you possess the land?

KJVWherefore say^H559^(H8798) unto them, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069; Ye eat^H398^(H8799) with the blood^H1818, and lift up^H5375^(H8799) your eyes^H5869 toward your idols^H1544, and shed^H8210^(H8799) blood^H1818: and shall ye possess^H3423^(H8799) the land^H776?

²⁶ You stand on your sword, you work abomination, and every one of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. So should you possess the land?”’

²⁷ “You shall tell them, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “As I live, surely those who are in the waste places will fall by the sword. I will give whoever is in the open field to the animals to be devoured, and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves will die of the pestilence.

KJVSay^H559^(H8799) thou thus unto them, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069; As I live^H2416, surely they that are in the wastes^H2723 shall fall^H5307^(H8799) by the sword^H2719, and him that is in the open^H6440 field^H7704 will I give^H5414^(H8804) to the beasts^H2416 to be devoured^H398^(H8800), and they that be in the forts^H4679 and in the caves^H4631 shall die^H4191^(H8799) of the pestilence^H1698.

²⁸ I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment. The pride of her power will cease. The mountains of Israel will be desolate, so that no one will pass through.

KJVFor I will lay^H5414^(H8804) the land^H776 most^H4923 desolate^H8077, and the pomp^H1347 of her strength^H5797 shall cease^H7673^(H8738); and the mountains^H2022 of Israel^H3478 shall be desolate^H8074^(H8804), that none shall pass through^H5674^(H8802).

²⁹ Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment because of all their abominations which they have committed.”’

³⁰ “As for you, son of man, the children of your people talk about you by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak to one another, everyone to his brother, saying, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes out from Yahweh.’

KJVAlso, thou son^H1121 of man^H120, the children^H1121 of thy people^H5971 still are talking^H1696^(H8737) against^H681 thee by the walls^H7023 and in the doors^H6607 of the houses^H1004, and speak^H1696^(H8765) one^H2297 to another^H259, every one^H376 to his brother^H251, saying^H559^(H8800), Come^H935^(H8798), I pray you, and hear^H8085^(H8798) what is the word^H1697 that cometh forth^H3318^(H8802) from the LORD^H3068.

³¹ They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but don’t do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain.

³² Behold, you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they don’t do them.

³³ “When this comes to pass—behold, it comes—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

KJVAnd when this cometh to pass^H935^(H8800),(lo, it will come^H935^(H8802),) then shall they know^H3045^(H8804) that a prophet^H5030 hath been among^H8432 them.

¹In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, in the first day of the month, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

KJVAnd it came to pass in the twelfth^H8147^H6240 year^H8141, in the twelfth month^H2320, in the first^H259 day of the month^H2320, that the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto me, saying^H559^(H8800),

² “Son of man, take up a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and tell him, ‘You were likened to a young lion of the nations; yet you are as a monster in the seas. You broke out with your rivers, and troubled the waters with your feet, and fouled their rivers.’”

³ The Lord Yahweh says: “I will spread out my net on you with a company of many peoples. They will bring you up in my net.

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069; I will therefore spread out^H6566^(H8804) my net^H7568 over thee with a company^H6951 of many^H7227 people^H5971; and they shall bring thee up^H5927^(H8689) in my net^H2764.

⁴ I will leave you on the land. I will cast you out on the open field, and will cause all the birds of the sky to settle on you. I will satisfy the animals of the whole earth with you.

⁵ I will lay your flesh on the mountains, and fill the valleys with your height.

⁶ I will also water the land in which you swim with your blood, even to the mountains. The watercourses will be full of you.

KJVI will also water^H8248^(H8689) with thy blood^H1818 the land^H776 wherein thou swimmest^H6824, even to the mountains^H2022; and the rivers^H650 shall be full^H4390^(H8735) of thee.

⁷ When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and make its stars dark. I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon won’t give its light.

KJVAnd when I shall put thee out^H3518^(H8763), I will cover^H3680^(H8765) the heaven^H8064, and make^H6937 the stars^H3556 thereof dark^H6937^(H8689); I will cover^H3680^(H8762) the sun^H8121 with a cloud^H6051, and the moon^H3394 shall not give^H215^(H8686) her light^H216.

⁸ I will make all the bright lights of the sky dark over you, and set darkness on your land,” says the Lord Yahweh.

KJVAll the bright^H3974 lights^H216 of heaven^H8064 will I make dark^H6937^(H8686) over thee, and set^H5414^(H8804) darkness^H2822 upon thy land^H776, saith^H5002^(H8803) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069.

⁹ “I will also trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries which you have not known.

KJVI will also vex^H3707^(H8689) the hearts^H3820 of many^H7227 people^H5971, when I shall bring^H935^(H8687) thy destruction^H7667 among the nations^H1471, into the countries^H776 which thou hast not known^H3045^(H8804).

¹⁰ Yes, I will make many peoples amazed at you, and their kings will be horribly afraid for you, when I brandish my sword before them. They will tremble at every moment, every man for his own life, in the day of your fall.”

KJVYea, I will make many^H7227 people^H5971 amazed^H8074^(H8689) at thee, and their kings^H4428 shall be horribly^H8178 afraid^H8175^(H8799) for thee, when I shall brandish^H5774^(H8788) my sword^H2719 before them^H6440; and they shall tremble^H2729^(H8804) at every moment^H7281, every man^H376 for his own life^H5315, in the day^H3117 of thy fall^H4658.

¹¹ For the Lord Yahweh says: “The sword of the king of Babylon will come on you.

KJVFor thus saith^H559^(H8804) the Lord^H136 GOD^H3069; The sword^H2719 of the king^H4428 of Babylon^H894 shall come^H935^(H8799) upon thee.

¹² I will cause your multitude to fall by the swords of the mighty. They are all the ruthless of the nations. They will bring the pride of Egypt to nothing, and all its multitude will be destroyed.

KJVBy the swords^H2719 of the mighty^H1368 will I cause thy multitude^H1995 to fall^H5307^(H8686), the terrible^H6184 of the nations^H1471, all of them: and they shall spoil^H7703^(H8804) the pomp^H1347 of Egypt^H4714, and all the multitude^H1995 thereof shall be destroyed^H8045^(H8738).

¹³ I will destroy also all its animals from beside many waters. The foot of man won’t trouble them any more, nor will the hoofs of animals trouble them.

¹⁴ Then I will make their waters clear, and cause their rivers to run like oil,” says the Lord Yahweh.

¹⁵ “When I make the land of Egypt desolate and waste, a land destitute of that of which it was full, when I strike all those who dwell therein, then they will know that I am Yahweh.

KJVWhen I shall make^H5414^(H8800) the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714 desolate^H8077, and the country^H776 shall be destitute^H8074^(H8737) of that whereof it was full^H4393, when I shall smite^H5221^(H8687) all them that dwell^H3427^(H8802) therein, then shall they know^H3045^(H8804) that I am the LORD^H3068.

¹⁶ “‘“This is the lamentation with which they will lament. The daughters of the nations will lament with this. They will lament with it over Egypt, and over all her multitude,” says the Lord Yahweh.’”

¹⁷ Also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth day of the month, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

KJVIt came to pass also in the twelfth^H8147^H6240 year^H8141, in the fifteenth^H2568^H6240 day of the month^H2320, that the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto me, saying^H559^(H8800),

¹⁸ “Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her and the daughters of the famous nations, to the lower parts of the earth, with those who go down into the pit.

KJVSon^H1121 of man^H120, wail^H5091^(H8798) for the multitude^H1995 of Egypt^H4714, and cast them down^H3381^(H8685), even her, and the daughters^H1323 of the famous^H117 nations^H1471, unto the nether parts^H8482 of the earth^H776, with them that go down^H3381^(H8802) into the pit^H953.

¹⁹ Whom do you pass in beauty? Go down, and be laid with the uncircumcised.

²⁰ They will fall among those who are slain by the sword. She is delivered to the sword. Draw her away with all her multitudes.

KJVThey shall fall^H5307^(H8799) in the midst^H8432 of them that are slain^H2491 by the sword^H2719: she is delivered^H5414^(H8738) to the sword^H2719: draw^H4900^(H8798) her and all her multitudes^H1995.

²¹ The strong among the mighty will speak to him out of the middle of Sheol with those who help him. They have gone down. The uncircumcised lie still, slain by the sword.

KJVThe strong^H410 among the mighty^H1368 shall speak^H1696^(H8762) to him out of the midst^H8432 of hell^H7585 with them that help^H5826^(H8802) him: they are gone down^H3381^(H8804), they lie^H7901^(H8804) uncircumcised^H6189, slain^H2491 by the sword^H2719.

²² “Asshur is there with all her company. Her graves are all around her. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword,

²³ whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit, and her company is around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who caused terror in the land of the living.
