1When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it
KJVAnd it came to pass, when all the kingsH4428 which were on this sideH5676 JordanH3383, in the hillsH2022, and in the valleysH8219, and in all the coastsH2348 of the greatH1419 seaH3220 over againstH4136 LebanonH3844, the HittiteH2850, and the AmoriteH567, the CanaaniteH3669, the PerizziteH6522, the HiviteH2340, and the JebusiteH2983, heardH8085(H8800) thereof;
2 they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
KJVThat they gatheredH6908(H8691) themselves togetherH3162, to fightH3898(H8736) with JoshuaH3091 and with IsraelH3478, with oneH259 accordH6310.
3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,
KJVAnd when the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of GibeonH1391 heardH8085(H8804) what JoshuaH3091 had doneH6213(H8804) unto JerichoH3405 and to AiH5857,
4 they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and old, torn-up and bound up wineskins,
KJVThey did workH6213(H8799) wililyH6195, and wentH3212(H8799) and made as if they had been ambassadorsH6737(H8691), and tookH3947(H8799) oldH1087 sacksH8242 upon their assesH2543, and wineH3196 bottlesH4997, oldH1087, and rentH1234(H8794), and bound upH6887(H8794);
5 and old and patched sandals on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.
KJVAnd oldH1087 shoesH5275 and cloutedH2921(H8794) upon their feetH7272, and oldH1087 garmentsH8008 upon them; and all the breadH3899 of their provisionH6718 was dryH3001(H8804) and mouldyH5350.
6 They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”
KJVAnd they wentH3212(H8799) to JoshuaH3091 unto the campH4264 at GilgalH1537, and saidH559(H8799) unto him, and to the menH376 of IsraelH3478, We be comeH935(H8804) from a farH7350 countryH776: now therefore makeH3772(H8798) ye a leagueH1285 with us.
7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “What if you live among us? How could we make a covenant with you?”
KJVAnd the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(H8799) unto the HivitesH2340, PeradventureH194 ye dwellH3427(H8802) amongH7130 us; and how shall we makeH3772(H8799) a leagueH1285 with you?
8 They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?”
KJVAnd they saidH559(H8799) unto JoshuaH3091, We are thy servantsH5650. And JoshuaH3091 saidH559(H8799) unto them, Who are ye? and from whenceH370 comeH935(H8799) ye?
9 They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,
KJVAnd they saidH559(H8799) unto him, From a veryH3966 farH7350 countryH776 thy servantsH5650 are comeH935(H8804) because of the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068 thy GodH430: for we have heardH8085(H8804) the fameH8089 of him, and all that he didH6213(H8804) in EgyptH4714,
10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
KJVAnd all that he didH6213(H8804) to the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567, that were beyondH5676 JordanH3383, to SihonH5511 kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809, and to OgH5747 kingH4428 of BashanH1316, which was at AshtarothH6252.
11 Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take supplies in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them. Tell them, “We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.”’
KJVWherefore our eldersH2205 and all the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of our countryH776 spakeH559(H8799) to us, sayingH559(H8800), TakeH3947(H8798) victualsH6720 with youH3027 for the journeyH1870, and goH3212(H8798) to meetH7125(H8800) them, and sayH559(H8804) unto them, We are your servantsH5650: therefore now makeH3772(H8798) ye a leagueH1285 with us.
12 This our bread we took hot for our supplies out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become moldy.
KJVThis our breadH3899 we took hotH2525 for our provisionH6679(H8694) out of our housesH1004 on the dayH3117 we came forthH3318(H8800) to goH3212(H8800) unto you; but now, behold, it is dryH3001(H8804), and it is mouldyH5350:
13 These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey.”
KJVAnd these bottlesH4997 of wineH3196, which we filledH4390(H8765), were newH2319; and, behold, they be rentH1234(H8694): and these our garmentsH8008 and our shoesH5275 are become oldH1086(H8804) by reason of the veryH3966 longH7230 journeyH1870.
14 The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.
KJVAnd the menH582 tookH3947(H8799) of their victualsH6718, and askedH7592(H8804) not counsel at the mouthH6310 of the LORDH3068.
15 Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.
KJVAnd JoshuaH3091 madeH6213(H8799) peaceH7965 with them, and madeH3772(H8799) a leagueH1285 with them, to let them liveH2421(H8763): and the princesH5387 of the congregationH5712 swareH7650(H8735) unto them.
16 At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.
KJVAnd it came to pass at the endH7097 of threeH7969 daysH3117 afterH310 they had madeH3772(H8804) a leagueH1285 with them, that they heardH8085(H8799) that they were their neighboursH7138, and that they dweltH3427(H8802) amongH7130 them.
17 The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.
KJVAnd the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 journeyedH5265(H8799), and cameH935(H8799) unto their citiesH5892 on the thirdH7992 dayH3117. Now their citiesH5892 were GibeonH1391, and ChephirahH3716, and BeerothH881, and KirjathjearimH7157.
18 The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes.
KJVAnd the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 smoteH5221(H8689) them not, because the princesH5387 of the congregationH5712 had swornH7650(H8738) unto them by the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478. And all the congregationH5712 murmuredH3885(H8735) against the princesH5387.
19 But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. Now therefore we may not touch them.
KJVBut all the princesH5387 saidH559(H8799) unto all the congregationH5712, We have swornH7650(H8738) unto them by the LORDH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478: now therefore we mayH3201(H8799) not touchH5060(H8800) them.
20 We will do this to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”
KJVThis we will doH6213(H8799) to them; we will even let them liveH2421(H8687), lest wrathH7110 be upon us, because of the oathH7621 which we swareH7650(H8738) unto them.
21 The princes said to them, “Let them live.” So they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them.
KJVAnd the princesH5387 saidH559(H8799) unto them, Let them liveH2421(H8799); but let them be hewersH2404(H8802) of woodH6086 and drawersH7579(H8802) of waterH4325 unto all the congregationH5712; as the princesH5387 had promisedH1696(H8765) them.
22 Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?
KJVAnd JoshuaH3091 calledH7121(H8799) for them, and he spakeH1696(H8762) unto them, sayingH559(H8800), Wherefore have ye beguiledH7411(H8765) us, sayingH559(H8800), We are veryH3966 farH7350 from you; when ye dwellH3427(H8802) amongH7130 us?
23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be slaves, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God.”
KJVNow therefore ye are cursedH779(H8803), and there shall none of you be freedH3772(H8735) from being bondmenH5650, and hewersH2404(H8802) of woodH6086 and drawersH7579(H8802) of waterH4325 for the houseH1004 of my GodH430.
24 They answered Joshua, and said, “Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
KJVAnd they answeredH6030(H8799) JoshuaH3091, and saidH559(H8799), Because it was certainlyH5046(H8715) toldH5046(H8717) thy servantsH5650, how that the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 commandedH6680(H8765) his servantH5650 MosesH4872 to giveH5414(H8800) you all the landH776, and to destroyH8045(H8687) all the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of the landH776 from beforeH6440 you, therefore we were soreH3966 afraidH3372(H8799) of our livesH5315 becauseH6440 of you, and have doneH6213(H8799) this thingH1697.
25 Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”
KJVAnd now, behold, weH2009 are in thine handH3027: as it seemethH5869 goodH2896 and rightH3477 unto thee to doH6213(H8800) unto us, doH6213(H8798).
26 He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.
KJVAnd so didH6213(H8799) he unto them, and deliveredH5337(H8686) them out of the handH3027 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, that they slewH2026(H8804) them not.
27 That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for Yahweh’s altar to this day, in the place which he should choose.
KJVAnd JoshuaH3091 madeH5414(H8799) them that dayH3117 hewersH2404(H8802) of woodH6086 and drawersH7579(H8802) of waterH4325 for the congregationH5712, and for the altarH4196 of the LORDH3068, even unto this dayH3117, in the placeH4725 which he should chooseH977(H8799).
