¹Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor. He was the son of a prostitute. Gilead became the father of Jephthah.

KJVNow Jephthah^H3316 the Gileadite^H1569 was a mighty man^H1368 of valour^H2428, and he was the son^H1121 of an harlot^H802^H2181^(H8802): and Gilead^H1568 begat^H3205^(H8686) Jephthah^H3316.

² Gilead’s wife bore him sons. When his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You will not inherit in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.”

KJVAnd Gilead's^H1568 wife^H802 bare^H3205^(H8799) him sons^H1121; and his wife's^H802 sons^H1121 grew up^H1431^(H8799), and they thrust out^H1644^(H8762) Jephthah^H3316, and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Thou shalt not inherit^H5157^(H8799) in our father's^H1 house^H1004; for thou art the son^H1121 of a strange^H312 woman^H802.

³ Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Outlaws joined up with Jephthah, and they went out with him.

KJVThen Jephthah^H3316 fled^H1272^(H8799) from^H6440 his brethren^H251, and dwelt^H3427^(H8799) in the land^H776 of Tob^H2897: and there were gathered^H3950^(H8691) vain^H7386 men^H582 to Jephthah^H3316, and went out^H3318^(H8799) with him.

⁴ After a while, the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

KJVAnd it came to pass in process of time^H3117, that the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 made war^H3898^(H8735) against Israel^H3478.

⁵ When the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob.

KJVAnd it was so, that when the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 made war^H3898^(H8738) against Israel^H3478, the elders^H2205 of Gilead^H1568 went^H3212^(H8799) to fetch^H3947^(H8800) Jephthah^H3316 out of the land^H776 of Tob^H2897:

⁶ They said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.”

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799) unto Jephthah^H3316, Come^H3212^(H8798), and be our captain^H7101, that we may fight^H3898^(H8735) with the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983.

⁷ Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”

KJVAnd Jephthah^H3316 said^H559^(H8799) unto the elders^H2205 of Gilead^H1568, Did not ye hate^H8130^(H8804) me, and expel^H1644^(H8762) me out of my father's^H1 house^H1004? and why are ye come^H935^(H8804) unto me now when ye are in distress^H6887^(H8804)?

⁸ The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight with the children of Ammon. You will be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

⁹ Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh delivers them before me, will I be your head?”

KJVAnd Jephthah^H3316 said^H559^(H8799) unto the elders^H2205 of Gilead^H1568, If ye bring me home again^H7725^(H8688) to fight^H3898^(H8736) against the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, and the LORD^H3068 deliver^H5414^(H8804) them before^H6440 me, shall I be your head^H7218?

¹⁰ The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh will be witness between us. Surely we will do what you say.”

KJVAnd the elders^H2205 of Gilead^H1568 said^H559^(H8799) unto Jephthah^H3316, The LORD^H3068 be witness^H8085^(H8802) between us, if we do^H6213^(H8799) not so according to thy words^H1697.

¹¹ Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them. Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

¹² Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What do you have to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”

¹³ The king of the children of Ammon answered the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.”

¹⁴ Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon;

¹⁵ and he said to him, “Jephthah says: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon;

KJVAnd said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) Jephthah^H3316, Israel^H3478 took not away^H3947^(H8804) the land^H776 of Moab^H4124, nor the land^H776 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983:

¹⁶ but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh,

KJVBut when Israel^H3478 came up^H5927^(H8800) from Egypt^H4714, and walked^H3212^(H8799) through the wilderness^H4057 unto the Red^H5488 sea^H3220, and came^H935^(H8799) to Kadesh^H6946;

¹⁷ then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab, but he refused; so Israel stayed in Kadesh.

¹⁸ Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

¹⁹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’

²⁰ But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

²¹ Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

²² They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

KJVAnd they possessed^H3423^(H8799) all the coasts^H1366 of the Amorites^H567, from Arnon^H769 even unto Jabbok^H2999, and from the wilderness^H4057 even unto Jordan^H3383.

²³ So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?

KJVSo now the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478 hath dispossessed^H3423^(H8689) the Amorites^H567 from before^H6440 his people^H5971 Israel^H3478, and shouldest thou possess^H3423^(H8799) it?

²⁴ Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

KJVWilt not thou possess^H3423^(H8799) that which Chemosh^H3645 thy god^H430 giveth thee to possess^H3423^(H8686)? So whomsoever the LORD^H3068 our God^H430 shall drive out^H3423^(H8689) from before^H6440 us, them will we possess^H3423^(H8799).

²⁵ Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

KJVAnd now art thou any thing better^H2896 than Balak^H1111 the son^H1121 of Zippor^H6834, king^H4428 of Moab^H4124? did he ever^H7378^(H8800) strive^H7378^(H8804) against Israel^H3478, or did he ever^H3898^(H8736) fight^H3898^(H8738) against them,

²⁶ Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along the side of the Arnon for three hundred years! Why didn’t you recover them within that time?

KJVWhile Israel^H3478 dwelt^H3427^(H8800) in Heshbon^H2809 and her towns^H1323, and in Aroer^H6177 and her towns^H1323, and in all the cities^H5892 that be along by the coasts^H3027 of Arnon^H769, three^H7969 hundred^H3967 years^H8141? why therefore did ye not recover^H5337^(H8689) them within that time^H6256?

²⁷ Therefore I have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. May Yahweh the Judge be judge today between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.”

KJVWherefore I have not sinned^H2398^(H8804) against thee, but thou doest^H6213^(H8802)^H853 me wrong^H7451 to war^H3898^(H8736) against me: the LORD^H3068 the Judge^H8199^(H8802) be judge^H8199^(H8799) this day^H3117 between the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 and the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983.

²⁸ However, the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

KJVHowbeit the king^H4428 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 hearkened^H8085^(H8804) not unto the words^H1697 of Jephthah^H3316 which he sent^H7971^(H8804) him.

²⁹ Then Yahweh’s Spirit came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.

KJVThen the Spirit^H7307 of the LORD^H3068 came upon Jephthah^H3316, and he passed over^H5674^(H8799) Gilead^H1568, and Manasseh^H4519, and passed over^H5674^(H8799) Mizpeh^H4708 of Gilead^H1568, and from Mizpeh^H4708 of Gilead^H1568 he passed over^H5674^(H8804) unto the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983.

³⁰ Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

KJVAnd Jephthah^H3316 vowed^H5087^(H8799) a vow^H5088 unto the LORD^H3068, and said^H559^(H8799), If thou shalt without fail^H5414^(H8800) deliver^H5414^(H8799) the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 into mine hands^H3027,

³¹ then it shall be, that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

KJVThen it shall be, that whatsoever^H3318^(H8802) cometh forth^H3318^(H8799) of the doors^H1817 of my house^H1004 to meet^H7125^(H8800) me, when I return^H7725^(H8800) in peace^H7965 from the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, shall surely be the LORD'S^H3068, and I will offer it up^H5927^(H8689) for a burnt offering^H5930.

³² So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.

³³ He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

KJVAnd he smote^H5221^(H8686) them from Aroer^H6177, even till thou come^H935^(H8800) to Minnith^H4511, even twenty^H6242 cities^H5892, and unto the plain^H58 of the vineyards^H3754^(H8677)^H64, with a very^H3966 great^H1419 slaughter^H4347. Thus the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 were subdued^H3665^(H8735) before^H6440 the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478.

³⁴ Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

³⁵ When he saw her, he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can’t go back.”

KJVAnd it came to pass, when he saw^H7200^(H8800) her, that he rent^H7167^(H8799) his clothes^H899, and said^H559^(H8799), Alas^H162, my daughter^H1323! thou hast brought^H3766 me very^H3766^(H8689) low^H3766^(H8687), and thou art one of them that trouble^H5916^(H8802) me: for I have opened^H6475^(H8804) my mouth^H6310 unto the LORD^H3068, and I cannot^H3201^(H8799) go back^H7725^(H8800).

³⁶ She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.”

KJVAnd she said^H559^(H8799) unto him, My father^H1, if thou hast opened^H6475^(H8804) thy mouth^H6310 unto the LORD^H3068, do^H6213^(H8798) to me according to that which^H834 hath proceeded^H3318^(H8804) out of thy mouth^H6310; forasmuch^H310 as the LORD^H3068 hath taken^H6213^(H8804) vengeance^H5360 for thee of thine enemies^H341^(H8802), even of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983.

³⁷ Then she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me. Leave me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”

³⁸ He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Go^H3212^(H8798). And he sent her away^H7971^(H8799) for two^H8147 months^H2320: and she went^H3212^(H8799) with her companions^H7464, and bewailed^H1058^(H8799) her virginity^H1331 upon the mountains^H2022.

³⁹ At the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. She was a virgin. It became a custom in Israel

KJVAnd it came to pass at the end^H7093 of two^H8147 months^H2320, that she returned^H7725^(H8799) unto her father^H1, who did^H6213^(H8799) with her according to his vow^H5088 which he had vowed^H5087^(H8804): and she knew^H3045^(H8804) no man^H376. And it was a custom^H2706 in Israel^H3478,

⁴⁰ that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

¹After Abimelech, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.

² He judged Israel twenty-three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.

³ After him Jair, the Gileadite, arose. He judged Israel twenty-two years.

⁴ He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkey colts. They had thirty cities, which are called Havvoth Jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

KJVAnd he had thirty^H7970 sons^H1121 that rode^H7392^(H8802) on thirty^H7970 ass colts^H5895, and they had thirty^H7970 cities^H5892, which are called^H7121^(H8799) Havothjair^H2334 unto this day^H3117, which are in the land^H776 of Gilead^H1568.

⁵ Jair died, and was buried in Kamon.

KJVAnd Jair^H2971 died^H4191^(H8799), and was buried^H6912^(H8735) in Camon^H7056.

⁶ The children of Israel again did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and served the Baals, the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines. They abandoned Yahweh, and didn’t serve him.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 did^H6213^(H8800) evil^H7451 again^H3254^(H8686) in the sight^H5869 of the LORD^H3068, and served^H5647^(H8799) Baalim^H1168, and Ashtaroth^H6252, and the gods^H430 of Syria^H758, and the gods^H430 of Zidon^H6721, and the gods^H430 of Moab^H4124, and the gods^H430 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, and the gods^H430 of the Philistines^H6430, and forsook^H5800^(H8799) the LORD^H3068, and served^H5647^(H8804) not him.

⁷ Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the children of Ammon.

KJVAnd the anger^H639 of the LORD^H3068 was hot^H2734^(H8799) against Israel^H3478, and he sold^H4376^(H8799) them into the hands^H3027 of the Philistines^H6430, and into the hands^H3027 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983.

⁸ They troubled and oppressed the children of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the children of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.

KJVAnd that year^H8141 they vexed^H7492^(H8799) and oppressed^H7533^(H8779) the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478: eighteen^H8083^H6240 years^H8141, all the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 that were on the other side^H5676 Jordan^H3383 in the land^H776 of the Amorites^H567, which is in Gilead^H1568.

⁹ The children of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was very distressed.

KJVMoreover the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 passed over^H5674^(H8799) Jordan^H3383 to fight^H3898^(H8736) also against Judah^H3063, and against Benjamin^H1144, and against the house^H1004 of Ephraim^H669; so that Israel^H3478 was sore^H3966 distressed^H3334^(H8799).

¹⁰ The children of Israel cried to Yahweh, saying, “We have sinned against you, even because we have forsaken our God, and have served the Baals.”

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 cried^H2199^(H8799) unto the LORD^H3068, saying^H559^(H8800), We have sinned^H2398^(H8804) against thee, both because we have forsaken^H5800^(H8804) our God^H430, and also served^H5647^(H8799) Baalim^H1168.

¹¹ Yahweh said to the children of Israel, “Didn’t I save you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians^H4714, and from the Amorites^H567, from the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, and from the Philistines^H6430?

¹² The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, oppressed you; and you cried to me, and I saved you out of their hand.

KJVThe Zidonians^H6722 also, and the Amalekites^H6002, and the Maonites^H4584, did oppress^H3905^(H8804) you; and ye cried^H6817^(H8799) to me, and I delivered^H3467^(H8686) you out of their hand^H3027.

¹³ Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods. Therefore I will save you no more.

¹⁴ Go and cry to the gods which you have chosen. Let them save you in the time of your distress!”

¹⁵ The children of Israel said to Yahweh, “We have sinned! Do to us whatever seems good to you; only deliver us, please, today.”
