¹Abram went up out of Egypt—he, his wife, all that he had, and Lot with him—into the South.

² Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.

³ He went on his journeys from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,

KJVAnd he went^H3212^(H8799) on his journeys^H4550 from the south^H5045 even to Bethel^H1008, unto the place^H4725 where his tent^H168 had been^H1961^(H8804) at the beginning^H8462, between Bethel^H1008 and Hai^H5857;

⁴ to the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first. There Abram called on Yahweh’s name.

KJVUnto the place^H4725 of the altar^H4196, which he had made^H6213^(H8804) there at the first^H7223: and there Abram^H87 called^H7121^(H8799) on the name^H8034 of the LORD^H3068.

⁵ Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, herds, and tents.

KJVAnd Lot^H3876 also, which went^H1980^(H8802) with^H854 Abram^H87, had flocks^H6629, and herds^H1241, and tents^H168.

⁶ The land was not able to bear them, that they might live together; for their possessions were so great that they couldn’t live together.

KJVAnd the land^H776 was not able to bear^H5375^(H8804) them, that they might dwell^H3427^(H8800) together^H3162: for their substance^H7399 was great^H7227, so that they could^H3201^(H8804) not dwell^H3427^(H8800) together^H3162.

⁷ There was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites lived in the land at that time.

KJVAnd there was a strife^H7379 between the herdmen^H7462^(H8802) of Abram's^H87 cattle^H4735 and the herdmen^H7462^(H8802) of Lot's^H3876 cattle^H4735: and the Canaanite^H3669 and the Perizzite^H6522 dwelled^H3427^(H8802) then in the land^H776.

⁸ Abram said to Lot, “Please, let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen; for we are relatives.

KJVAnd Abram^H87 said^H559^(H8799) unto Lot^H3876, Let there be^H1961^(H8799) no^H408 strife^H4808, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen^H7462^(H8802) and thy herdmen^H7462^(H8802); for we^H582 be brethren^H251.

⁹ Isn’t the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me. If you go to the left hand, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I will go to the left.”

KJVIs not the whole land^H776 before thee^H6440? separate thyself^H6504^(H8734), I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand^H8040, then I will go to the right^H3231^(H8686); or if thou depart to the right hand^H3225, then I will go to the left^H8041^(H8686).

¹⁰ Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere, before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of Yahweh, like the land of Egypt, as you go to Zoar.

KJVAnd Lot^H3876 lifted up^H5375^(H8799) his eyes^H5869, and beheld^H7200^(H8799) all the plain^H3603 of Jordan^H3383, that it was well watered^H4945 every where, before^H6440 the LORD^H3068 destroyed^H7843^(H8763) Sodom^H5467 and Gomorrah^H6017, even as the garden^H1588 of the LORD^H3068, like the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714, as thou comest^H935^(H8800) unto Zoar^H6820.

¹¹ So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself. Lot traveled east, and they separated themselves from one another.

KJVThen Lot^H3876 chose^H977^(H8799) him all the plain^H3603 of Jordan^H3383; and Lot^H3876 journeyed^H5265^(H8799) east^H6924: and they separated themselves^H6504^(H8735) the one^H376 from the other^H251.

¹² Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom.

KJVAbram^H87 dwelled^H3427^(H8804) in the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667, and Lot^H3876 dwelled^H3427^(H8804) in the cities^H5892 of the plain^H3603, and pitched his tent^H167^(H8799) toward^H5704 Sodom^H5467.

¹³ Now the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners against Yahweh.

KJVBut the men^H582 of Sodom^H5467 were wicked^H7451 and sinners^H2400 before the LORD^H3068 exceedingly^H3966.

¹⁴ Yahweh said to Abram, after Lot was separated from him, “Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8804) unto Abram^H87, after^H310 that Lot^H3876 was separated^H6504^(H8736) from him, Lift up^H5375^(H8798) now thine eyes^H5869, and look^H7200^(H8798) from the place^H4725 where thou art northward^H6828, and southward^H5045, and eastward^H6924, and westward^H3220:

¹⁵ for I will give all the land which you see to you and to your offspring forever.

KJVFor all the land^H776 which thou seest^H7200^(H8802), to thee will I give it^H5414^(H8799), and to thy seed^H2233 for^H5704 ever^H5769.

¹⁶ I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can count the dust of the earth, then your offspring may also be counted.

KJVAnd I will make^H7760^(H8804) thy seed^H2233 as the dust^H6083 of the earth^H776: so that^H834 if a man^H376 can^H3201^(H8799) number^H4487^(H8800) the dust^H6083 of the earth^H776, then shall thy seed^H2233 also be numbered^H4487^(H8735).

¹⁷ Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its width; for I will give it to you.”

KJVArise^H6965^(H8798), walk^H1980^(H8690) through the land^H776 in the length^H753 of it and in the breadth^H7341 of it; for I will give^H5414^(H8799) it unto thee.

¹⁸ Abram moved his tent, and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to Yahweh.

KJVThen Abram^H87 removed his tent^H167^(H8799), and came^H935^(H8799) and dwelt^H3427^(H8799) in the plain^H436 of Mamre^H4471, which is in Hebron^H2275, and built^H1129^(H8799) there an altar^H4196 unto the LORD^H3068.

¹Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.

KJVNow the LORD^H3068 had said^H559^(H8799) unto Abram^H87, Get thee out^H3212^(H8798) of thy country^H776, and from thy kindred^H4138, and from thy father's^H1 house^H1004, unto a land^H776 that I will shew^H7200^(H8686) thee:

² I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.

KJVAnd I will make of thee^H6213^(H8799) a great^H1419 nation^H1471, and I will bless^H1288^(H8762) thee, and make^H1431 thy name^H8034 great^H1431^(H8762); and thou shalt be a blessing^H1293:

³ I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treats you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”

KJVAnd I will bless^H1288^(H8762) them that bless^H1288^(H8764) thee, and curse^H779^(H8799) him that curseth^H7043^(H8764) thee: and in thee shall all families^H4940 of the earth^H127 be blessed^H1288^(H8738).

⁴ So Abram went, as Yahweh had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

KJVSo Abram^H87 departed^H3212^(H8799), as the LORD^H3068 had spoken^H1696^(H8765) unto him; and Lot^H3876 went^H3212^(H8799) with him: and Abram^H87 was seventy^H7657^H8141 and five^H2568 years^H8141 old^H1121 when he departed^H3318^(H8800) out of Haran^H2771.

⁵ Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan.

KJVAnd Abram^H87 took^H3947^(H8799) Sarai^H8297 his wife^H802, and Lot^H3876 his brother's^H251 son^H1121, and all their substance^H7399 that they had gathered^H7408^(H8804), and the souls^H5315 that they had gotten^H6213^(H8804) in Haran^H2771; and they went forth^H3318^(H8799) to go^H3212^(H8800) into the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667; and into the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667 they came^H935^(H8799).

⁶ Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time, Canaanites were in the land.

KJVAnd Abram^H87 passed through^H5674^(H8799) the land^H776 unto the place^H4725 of Sichem^H7927, unto the plain^H436 of Moreh^H4176. And the Canaanite^H3669 was then^H227 in the land^H776.

⁷ Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.” He built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 appeared^H7200^(H8735) unto Abram^H87, and said^H559^(H8799), Unto thy seed^H2233 will I give^H5414^(H8799) this^H2063 land^H776: and there builded^H1129^(H8799) he an altar^H4196 unto the LORD^H3068, who appeared^H7200^(H8737) unto him.

⁸ He left from there to go to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh and called on Yahweh’s name.

KJVAnd he removed^H6275^(H8686) from thence unto a mountain^H2022 on the east^H6924 of Bethel^H1008, and pitched^H5186^(H8799) his tent^H168, having Bethel^H1008 on the west^H3220, and Hai^H5857 on the east^H6924: and there he builded^H1129^(H8799) an altar^H4196 unto the LORD^H3068, and called^H7121^(H8799) upon the name^H8034 of the LORD^H3068.

⁹ Abram traveled, still going on toward the South.

KJVAnd Abram^H87 journeyed^H5265^(H8799), going on^H1980^(H8800) still^H5265^(H8800) toward the south^H5045.

¹⁰ There was a famine in the land. Abram went down into Egypt to live as a foreigner there, for the famine was severe in the land.

KJVAnd there was a famine^H7458 in the land^H776: and Abram^H87 went down^H3381^(H8799) into Egypt^H4714 to sojourn^H1481^(H8800) there; for the famine^H7458 was grievous^H3515 in the land^H776.

¹¹ When he had come near to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when^H834 he was come near^H7126^(H8689) to enter^H935^(H8800) into Egypt^H4714, that he said^H559^(H8799) unto Sarai^H8297 his wife^H802, Behold^H2009 now^H4994, I know^H3045^(H8804) that thou art a fair^H3303 woman^H802 to look upon^H4758:

¹² It will happen that when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but they will save you alive.

KJVTherefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians^H4713 shall see^H7200^(H8799) thee, that they shall say^H559^(H8804), This is his wife^H802: and they will kill^H2026^(H8804) me, but they will save thee alive^H2421^(H8762).

¹³ Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that my soul may live because of you.”

KJVSay^H559^(H8798), I pray thee^H4994, thou art my sister^H269: that^H4616 it may be well^H3190^(H8799) with me for thy sake; and my soul^H5315 shall live^H2421^(H8804) because of thee^H1558.

¹⁴ When Abram had come into Egypt, some Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.

KJVAnd it came to pass, that, when Abram^H87 was come^H935^(H8800) into Egypt^H4714, the Egyptians^H4713 beheld^H7200^(H8799) the woman^H802 that she was very^H3966 fair^H3303.

¹⁵ The princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.

KJVThe princes^H8269 also of Pharaoh^H6547 saw^H7200^(H8799) her, and commended^H1984^(H8762) her before^H413 Pharaoh^H6547: and the woman^H802 was taken^H3947^(H8714) into Pharaoh's^H6547 house^H1004.

¹⁶ He dealt well with Abram for her sake. He had sheep, cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

KJVAnd he entreated^H3190 Abram^H87 well^H3190^(H8689) for her sake: and he had sheep^H6629, and oxen^H1241, and he asses^H2543, and menservants^H5650, and maidservants^H8198, and she asses^H860, and camels^H1581.

¹⁷ Yahweh afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 plagued^H5060^(H8762) Pharaoh^H6547 and his house^H1004 with great^H1419 plagues^H5061 because of^H1697 Sarai^H8297 Abram's^H87 wife^H802.

¹⁸ Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this that you have done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she was your wife?

KJVAnd Pharaoh^H6547 called^H7121^(H8799) Abram^H87, and said^H559^(H8799), What is this that thou hast done^H6213^(H8804) unto me? why didst thou not tell^H5046^(H8689) me that she was thy wife^H802?

¹⁹ Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, see your wife, take her, and go your way.”

KJVWhy saidst thou^H559^(H8804), She is my sister^H269? so I might have taken^H3947^(H8799) her to me to wife^H802: now therefore behold thy wife^H802, take^H3947^(H8798) her, and go thy way^H3212^(H8798).

²⁰ Pharaoh commanded men concerning him, and they escorted him away with his wife and all that he had.
