¹In the days when the judges judged, there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab with his wife and his two sons.

KJVNow it came to pass in the days^H3117 when the judges^H8199^(H8802) ruled^H8199^(H8800), that there was a famine^H7458 in the land^H776. And a certain man^H376 of Bethlehemjudah^H1035^H3063 went^H3212^(H8799) to sojourn^H1481^(H8800) in the country^H7704 of Moab^H4124, he, and his wife^H802, and his two^H8147 sons^H1121.

² The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there.

KJVAnd the name^H8034 of the man^H376 was Elimelech^H458, and the name^H8034 of his wife^H802 Naomi^H5281, and the name^H8034 of his two^H8147 sons^H1121 Mahlon^H4248 and Chilion^H3630, Ephrathites^H673 of Bethlehemjudah^H1035^H3063. And they came^H935^(H8799) into the country^H7704 of Moab^H4124, and continued there.

³ Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons.

⁴ They took for themselves wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there about ten years.

KJVAnd they took^H5375^(H8799) them wives^H802 of the women^H802 of Moab^H4125; the name^H8034 of the one^H259 was Orpah^H6204, and the name^H8034 of the other^H8145 Ruth^H7327: and they dwelled^H3427^(H8799) there about ten^H6235 years^H8141.

⁵ Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.

KJVAnd Mahlon^H4248 and Chilion^H3630 died^H4191^(H8799) also both^H8147 of them; and the woman^H802 was left^H7604^(H8735) of her two^H8147 sons^H3206 and her husband^H376.

⁶ Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab; for she had heard in the country of Moab how Yahweh had visited his people in giving them bread.

⁷ She went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her. They went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

KJVWherefore she went forth^H3318^(H8799) out of the place^H4725 where she was, and her two^H8147 daughters in law^H3618 with her; and they went^H3212^(H8799) on the way^H1870 to return^H7725^(H8800) unto the land^H776 of Judah^H3063.

⁸ Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house. May Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me.

⁹ May Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices, and wept.

¹⁰ They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.”

¹¹ Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

KJVAnd Naomi^H5281 said^H559^(H8799), Turn again^H7725^(H8798), my daughters^H1323: why will ye go^H3212^(H8799) with me? are there yet any more sons^H1121 in my womb^H4578, that they may be your husbands^H582?

¹² Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons,

KJVTurn again^H7725^(H8798), my daughters^H1323, go^H3212^(H8798) your way; for I am too old^H2204^(H8804) to have an husband^H376. If I should say^H559^(H8804), I have^H3426 hope^H8615, if I should have an husband^H376 also to night^H3915, and should also bear^H3205^(H8804) sons^H1121;

¹³ would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for Yahweh’s hand has gone out against me.”

KJVWould ye tarry^H7663^(H8762) for them^H3860 till they were grown^H1431^(H8799)? would ye stay^H5702^(H8735) for them^H3860 from having husbands^H376? nay, my daughters^H1323; for it grieveth^H4843^(H8804) me much^H3966 for your sakes that the hand^H3027 of the LORD^H3068 is gone out^H3318^(H8804) against me.

¹⁴ They lifted up their voices and wept again; then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stayed with her.

¹⁵ She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.”

¹⁶ Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.

¹⁷ Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”

¹⁸ When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.

KJVWhen she saw^H7200^(H8799) that she was stedfastly minded^H553^(H8693) to go^H3212^(H8800) with her, then she left^H2308^(H8799) speaking^H1696^(H8763) unto her.

¹⁹ So they both went until they came to Bethlehem. When they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was excited about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?”

²⁰ She said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

KJVAnd she said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Call^H7121^(H8799) me not Naomi^H5281, call^H7121^(H8798) me Mara^H4755: for the Almighty^H7706 hath dealt very^H3966 bitterly^H4843^(H8689) with me.

²¹ I went out full, and Yahweh has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since Yahweh has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”

KJVI went out^H1980^(H8804) full^H4392, and the LORD^H3068 hath brought me home again^H7725^(H8689) empty^H7387: why then call^H7121^(H8799) ye me Naomi^H5281, seeing the LORD^H3068 hath testified^H6030^(H8804) against me, and the Almighty^H7706 hath afflicted^H7489^(H8689) me?

²² So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab. They came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

¹Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, “None of us will give his daughter to Benjamin as a wife.”

² The people came to Bethel and sat there until evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept severely.

³ They said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that there should be one tribe lacking in Israel today?”

KJVAnd said^H559^(H8799), O LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478, why is this come to pass in Israel^H3478, that there should be to day^H3117 one^H259 tribe^H7626 lacking^H6485^(H8736) in Israel^H3478?

⁴ On the next day, the people rose early and built an altar there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

KJVAnd it came to pass on the morrow^H4283, that the people^H5971 rose early^H7925^(H8686), and built^H1129^(H8799) there an altar^H4196, and offered^H5927^(H8686) burnt offerings^H5930 and peace offerings^H8002.

⁵ The children of Israel said, “Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up in the assembly to Yahweh?” For they had made a great oath concerning him who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.”

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 said^H559^(H8799), Who is there among all the tribes^H7626 of Israel^H3478 that^H834 came^H5927^(H8804) not up with the congregation^H6951 unto the LORD^H3068? For they had made a great^H1419 oath^H7621 concerning him that came not up^H5927^(H8804) to the LORD^H3068 to Mizpeh^H4709, saying^H559^(H8800), He shall surely^H4191^(H8800) be put to death^H4191^(H8714).

⁶ The children of Israel grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, “There is one tribe cut off from Israel today.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 repented^H5162^(H8735) them for Benjamin^H1144 their brother^H251, and said^H559^(H8799), There is one^H259 tribe^H7626 cut off^H1438^(H8738) from Israel^H3478 this day^H3117.

⁷ How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since we have sworn by Yahweh that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?”

KJVHow shall we do^H6213^(H8799) for wives^H802 for them that remain^H3498^(H8737), seeing we have sworn^H7650^(H8738) by the LORD^H3068 that we will not give^H5414^(H8800) them of our daughters^H1323 to wives^H802?

⁸ They said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah?” Behold, no one came from Jabesh Gilead to the camp to the assembly.

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799), What one^H259 is there of the tribes^H7626 of Israel^H3478 that came not up^H5927^(H8804) to Mizpeh^H4709 to the LORD^H3068? And, behold, there came^H935^(H8804) none^H376 to the camp^H4264 from Jabeshgilead^H3003^H1568 to the assembly^H6951.

⁹ For when the people were counted, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead there.

KJVFor the people^H5971 were numbered^H6485^(H8691), and, behold, there were none^H376 of the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Jabeshgilead^H3003^H1568 there.

¹⁰ The congregation sent twelve thousand of the most valiant men there, and commanded them, saying, “Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.

KJVAnd the congregation^H5712 sent^H7971^(H8799) thither twelve^H8147^H6240 thousand^H505 men^H376 of the valiantest^H1121^H2428, and commanded^H6680^(H8762) them, saying^H559^(H8800), Go^H3212^(H8798) and smite^H5221^(H8689) the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Jabeshgilead^H3003^H1568 with the edge^H6310 of the sword^H2719, with the women^H802 and the children^H2945.

¹¹ This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman who has lain with a man.”

¹² They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

¹³ The whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.

¹⁴ Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh Gilead. There still weren’t enough for them.

KJVAnd Benjamin^H1144 came again^H7725^(H8799) at that time^H6256; and they gave^H5414^(H8799) them wives^H802 which they had saved alive^H2421^(H8765) of the women^H802 of Jabeshgilead^H3003^H1568: and yet so they sufficed^H4672^(H8804) them not.

¹⁵ The people grieved for Benjamin, because Yahweh had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

KJVAnd the people^H5971 repented^H5162^(H8737) them for Benjamin^H1144, because that the LORD^H3068 had made^H6213^(H8804) a breach^H6556 in the tribes^H7626 of Israel^H3478.

¹⁶ Then the elders of the congregation said, “How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?”

KJVThen the elders^H2205 of the congregation^H5712 said^H559^(H8799), How shall we do^H6213^(H8799) for wives^H802 for them that remain^H3498^(H8737), seeing the women^H802 are destroyed^H8045^(H8738) out of Benjamin^H1144?

¹⁷ They said, “There must be an inheritance for those who are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel.

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799), There must be an inheritance^H3425 for them that be escaped^H6413 of Benjamin^H1144, that a tribe^H7626 be not destroyed^H4229^(H8735) out of Israel^H3478.

¹⁸ However, we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, ‘Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.’”

¹⁹ They said, “Behold, there is a feast of Yahweh from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.”

²⁰ They commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,

²¹ and see, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards, and each man catch his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

²² It shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we didn’t take for each man his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them; otherwise you would now be guilty.’”

²³ The children of Benjamin did so, and took wives for themselves according to their number, of those who danced, whom they carried off. They went and returned to their inheritance, built the cities, and lived in them.

²⁴ The children of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they each went out from there to his own inheritance.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Israel^H3478 departed^H1980^(H8691) thence at that time^H6256, every man^H376 to his tribe^H7626 and to his family^H4940, and they went out^H3318^(H8799) from thence every man^H376 to his inheritance^H5159.

²⁵ In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did that which was right in his own eyes.
